Simple Machines is pleased to announce the release of SMF 2.1 RC1. This first Release Candidate for SMF 2.1 brings the beta development phase to an end and is one of last steps toward the official release of SMF 2.1. Numerous bugs that were reported after the release of Beta 3 have been fixed and improvements have been made to security, stability, and performance. Notable improvements since Beta 3 include:
- Many database query improvements and optimizations.
- Updates to SCEditor, jQuery, and several other plugins and libraries.
- Image proxy improvements and support for external image proxies.
- Faster and more robust BBCode parsing.
- Full support for IRIs (International URLs).
- Localization support for reCaptcha.
- The ability for time zone descriptions to be localized.
- Rewrites of various language strings to make them clearer.
- An overhaul of the built-in language editor.
- More flexibility and options for custom profile fields.
- Improvments to two-factor authentication.
- An enhanced error log, including backtrace information.
- Bug fixes for alerts and email notifications.
- Support for decimal values in paid subscriptions.
- Smiley sets can now use many different image file formats.
- A multitude of template and CSS improvements and fixes.
- More intelligent CSS and JavaScript minimization.
- Even more new integration hooks to support edit-free modding.
You can read about these and many other improvements in the list of changes (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/pulls?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Apr+merged%3A%3E%3D2017-05-25) on GitHub.
The term "Release Candidate" means that the developers believe this version of the software is reliable enough to be installed and used on production websites. Nevertheless, you should still expect to encounter minor bugs in SMF 2.1 RC1. We encourage you to report any bugs you find.
You can install SMF 2.1 RC1 as a brand new forum, or upgrade to it from SMF 2.0.15 or any prior version. You can obtain an install or upgrade package from the download page (http://download.simplemachines.org/). You can look at Installing and Upgrading SMF (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Category:Installing_and_Upgrading) in the Online Manual to learn more. Please note that
upgrading from any beta version to RC1 is not supported.
Modification and theme authors are encouraged to check the roadmap for our upcoming development milestones (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/milestones) when deciding how to update their modifications and themes for SMF 2.1. In general, most mod authors should be able to start their work now, while theme authors may wish to wait for RC2.
Finally, as always, this announcement topic is not for support. Discussion and support for SMF 2.1 can be found in the SMF 2.1 support board (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=254.0).
Special thanks are due to all of the team members (https://www.simplemachines.org/about/smf/team.php) and code contributors (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/graphs/contributors) whose fantastic work has made this possible. We greatly appreciate the time, energy, and contributions that they have given to the SMF project.
Thank you for using SMF!
Kind regards,
Simple Machines
Update:A significant bug has been found in RC1 that prevents alerts and notification messages from being sent. A fix for this has already been included in the code on GitHub and will be available in RC2.
In the meantime, users can fix this issue themselves by following these instructions (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=564881.msg4006124#msg4006124).
Great news. Glad to see it pressing forward towards a final.
Congrats on the released! A lot of work has been done to get to this point.
Thanks to all those who helped make this release possible!
Good job everyone and a big thank you to all developers, contributors and testers! :)
Congratulations! :)
Amazing work! Thanks for your efforts :)

Congratulations to all you smart guys and gals that make my forum look good!
Congratulations it's great to see RC1 released, Thanks to all the team!!!
It's great to finally see this out. Thanks to all the Devs and all involved for their hard work.
Congratulations!!!
I have been waiting for 4 years.
Fantastic work all!
Please had in mind that the supported version of php/mariadb/mysql/postgres changed,
between the beta 3 and rc1.
Min
Php 5.4 or higher.
MySQL 5.0.22/5.1.10 or higher.
MariaDB 5.1.10 or higher.
PostgreSQL 9.4 or higher.
In mysql some query optimization only works with 8.0+ and mariadb 10.2+
On pg side to run all queries in best way you need 9.5+
Best performance you get when you used the newest version of this apps.
at the point of posting php 7.3 got already tested (not fully) but issues are not found.
Awesome work, it's been a long time coming. :)
Now it's time to update the website here. :D
Congratulations and many thanks to all who worked hard on this project.
It's finally here! Well done everybody :)

Is there a demo board up somewhere that we could use to preview the new version?
Given that it is free software, nothing is stopping you trying it yourself.
Congrats this is great news.
Bloody hell.
/me looks out window for flying pigs
Congratulations to the team. Looks like there should be a final version sometime this year.
Great work! :)

You do know what 'RC' means, right?
Probably doesn't, but the OP does say the team think this one is ok for production sites.
The main difficulties are likely to come in upgrading to RC2 and Final, because beginners won't be able to use Pacman for that. Mods/themes are likely to be a nuisance too. Which you would obviously know, but it's probably worth pointing out for some less experienced people.

Trouble is, there's already been a pretty major breaking bug that breaks one of the headline features that can't be fixed by tweaking config. RCs should be viewed with skepticism no matter the provider, no matter what the software is. They are better betas, not stable software.
Notifications in rc do not work. or I don't know how to use ?
Ohh, just as I was about to pull the trigger on Xen it looks like some progress is being made.
Hopefully the RC process won't be as drawn out as the beta process.

The idea is that they will have shorter releases.

I'd be utterly amazed if they aren't shorter, but shorter is a relative term when there was over a year and a half between beta 3 and RC1.
We can't promise any timeframes but you can replace "shorter" with "short" in that phrase, if you're going to analyze it that way.

Update:
A significant bug has been found in RC1 that prevents alerts and notification messages from being sent. A fix for this has already been included in the code on GitHub and will be available in RC2.
In the meantime, users of RC1 can fix this issue themselves by manually editing cron.php, which is located in the root folder of your forum (i.e., the same folder as index.php and SSI.php).
In cron.php, find these two lines of code (they are near the start of the file):
define('SMF', 'BACKGROUND');
define('FROM_CLI', empty($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD']));
Now replace them with the following:
define('SMF', 'BACKGROUND');
define('SMF_VERSION', '2.1 RC1');
define('SMF_FULL_VERSION', 'SMF ' . SMF_VERSION);
define('SMF_SOFTWARE_YEAR', '2019');
define('FROM_CLI', empty($_SERVER['REQUEST_METHOD']));
It'd be a good idea to whip up a patch for that. Back when SMF 2.0 RC2 came out there was a bug in the theme footer. Again, something that was easily fixed with a manual edit, but even easier (for average admins) to fix with a patch. So I whipped up the Phooter Phix patch and made it available for anyone who wanted it.
I'll do it.

Fair enough. And since this thread is not for support ;) can anyone point me to instructions for updating between RC versions please.
Since this thread is not for support, I won't tell you that it's the standard "large upgrade" procedure. In other words, I won't tell you that RC2 will include a complete set of files to overwrite all RC1 files. Nor will I even think of mentioning that RC2 will also include an upgrade.php, which you run through your browser via the usual url. :)

You do know what 'RC' means, right?
Bit late to the party but just FYI; Yes I do and I haven't implemented after looking into the existing issues on Git and also the fact that (at the minute) too many people use Tapatalk for me to switch over to 2.1 (I know....I know...don't...).
Once the number of issues calms down and we're in RC2, I'll reconsider.
I ran the latest nightly builds locally for a while and it's been pretty stable with the exception of some small issues, which made me (just like yourselves) consider RC1 appropriate for Production use...with caveats.
It's worth noting though, for others, that there should be a difference between actually implementing it and considering it for implementation.
It being RC1 means you can CONSIDER it for implementation in live. It doesn't mean you should and it's guaranteed to be safe and suitable for you.
RC1 isn't "all systems go".
Good, you're the kind of person who understands. Just a "I'll implement on my site" type comment sounded to me a bit like "it's stable, full steam ahead" as we've already seen. There are people who think RC means "not beta" and don't treat it as an RC should.
ggs on the release :)
May I suggest that, in the 2.1 support forum, a thread be created with specific instructions on updated from Rc toi RC versions and then from RC to final.
(as these come out). I'm sure that'd be handy and would be a point of reference to people who would be les likely to clutter up this thread with the same repeated questions. Or at least, respondents could simply provide a link... :)
Upgrades between RC releases is no different then it is to get you to RC1 to begin with, there's no need for any documentation on that.
The upgrader is designed to upgrade from ANY previous version including YaBS SE 1.5.5, betas and RC releases to the version you downloaded, and has been since the very beginning of SMF.
Github packages don't count, only officially released ones on SM.org.
Finally, masterpiece is out ^-^

Heh, actually, I have two nicknames that are frequently used, one by family, the other by friends. I'll be changing my display name to what it has been for many years, the current one is a nostalgia trip.
Regardless, we're getting off track.
one addtional note from my side,
when you use 2.1 please hav a look at your page creation time (the value on the bottom).
In the best case should be this lower as in your 2.0 setup,
for my understanding should ~0.100 sec for a good value,
until ~0.300 sec okay in avg
over this value you shoulk look into.
On my 2.0 forum :
Page created in 0.034 seconds with 16 queries.
On 2.1 RC1 :
Page created in 0.327 seconds with 15 queries.
-----
As you can see, 2.1 is quit a bit slower. The forums are running on the same dedicated server.
open a support thread,
when you want to solve this.
Both my sites run a lot quicker than that:
Page created in 0.044 seconds with 22 queries.
And
Page created in 0.039 seconds with 20 queries.
Both are 2.1
Congrats on the release and may there be many more to follow :)... I mean final releases, not betas or RCs, LOL :D.
Can't wait to update! :) Congratulations and thank you guys for all the hard work.
My members and I love this new version, and believe it was well worth the wait! Thank-you! :)

In that case I think that Smf 2.0 final will be released soon. That is very good news. I do not know why, but I was under the impression that there would have been a lot of RC releases.
2.0 had 5, but 2.1 should definitely have fewer (though I suspect it might go to 3 RCs)
Hopefully it will not take long now. I am about to start a new forum and I thought to go with Ipb, but now I am thinking it will be a waste of money as Smf 2.1. is much better imho and it will be worth the wait. (if it will not take long)

Thanks for the link, bookmarked.
Had a look at the milestones, and noticed that some of the open issues listed under RC3 and Final apparently have fixes already.
Are those issues likely to be moved to RC2? Seems like a good idea, if the fixes work. It'd knock the open issues for Final down from 50 to 40.
Congrats on the release!
Heartfelt!
That this step has been finally achieved has sparked my interest again!

Seems to be some nice progress on RC2. Since I checked the other day, open issues have dropped to 9. Two of those are waiting on pull requests, and another 3 apparently have fixes available. That leaves only 4 as "oh bugger what are we going to do with this?".

Not that we're allowed to ask when it will be ready, of course...
You can *ask* but the internal deadline moves back a week every time it gets asked...
Cool. So if I ask four times this morning the devs get a month off.
No, no, they still work on it as normal but the release date moves a month.
Thank You all, having been here since the first Betas. I am amazed to see how far it has come.
The word is very much appreciated thank you all for the amazing work.
i'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. i currently run SMF 1.1.21. can upgrade straight from this to smf 2.1 rc1?
Heck no
There will be some incremental upgrades read due to changes in php version requirements among other reasons
Actually, the upgrader is designed to be able to upgrade from any version since YaBB SE 1.5.5 (inclusive). Development releases not included, and upgrades from Betas aren't guaranteed either.
It's why the upgrade package includes upgrade_1-0.sql, upgrade_1-1.sql etc... the upgrader upgrades through each SQL file sequentially effectively doing the incremental upgrades all at once one after the other automatically.
There may be PHP or MySQL upgrades that'll need to be done otherwise depending on your server though. So if you plan on upgrading, backup first.
Also, all mods and themes you have on 1.1.21 will break and will need replacing.

Maybe, but I also think it's nice to have a place to let people (visibly) see that in the aftermath of an RC, people are having fun - and positive, relaxed and happy people tend to be more productive at fixing problems.
Besides, what forum (other than Discourse based ones*) doesn't actively have topic derailing going on?
* Because Jeff says that topics must ALWAYS STAY ON TOPIC. ALWAYS. And Jeff is wrong, that's not how people communicate. Don't be like Jeff.

Also, what if we are on a timeline displacement where the release of RC1 depends directly on the existence of whips?!
Quote from: Arantor on March 12, 2019, 06:33:57 PM...Discourse based ones...

Come to think of it... like Brexit, it may never happen.

I suspect RC2 will happen sooner rather than later. But sure, talk it down rather than actually being supportive of people doing things in their free time for your benefit.
If someone is impatient they can always pay close to 200 bucks for one of those bloated piece of crap for excuse forums.
I dunno, I wouldn't call XenForo bloated but there are things I can do in SMF that are... difficult in XF (and yes, I have a licence)

That was very endearing, thank you. I'm having a great day.
Unlike Brexit, SMF isn't leaving a Union.
Not entirely sure the UK is either. They can't seem to make their minds up. :D
However, I'm sure SMF 2.1 will be by far the greater success.
It isn't hard to be more successful than the trainwreck that is Brexit.
Just got me a copy. Time to play. Thanks yall
RC2...

You do realise this means that if there are a thousand requests then RC2 will be released in 2038.
Yes.

I can not wait till 2038, I'm 81 now. I like what I see in the SMF 2.1 so (https://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo1/Tutorial_02/Thank-you-volunteers.jpg)
I think we can take a week off for that! :)

Gee thanks, very nice of you..can maybe we do two weeks?
(You know I'm not being entirely serious, right?)

Oh Yea I know, I'm just joshing back at you.. You know the old saying "The miserable never die" that's me..
So now you going add any week, so when's 2.1 going to be released.
QuoteYou do realise this means that if there are a thousand requests then RC2 will be released in 2038.
That sounds like the SMF way... I thimk people adapted to that, but I will add on a lighter note, using this quote

Maybe SMF should skip '1' in release versions. For some reason it is the one ... that takes the most time reaching.

You're 81 years old? Wow. My respects to you sir. I can't picture a 81 year old knowing how to use a computer and stuff like that.
Yes I know this is off topic, it's just this once :) (mods how strict are you about going off topic?)
FFS. My mum is 84 and has an Apple laptop, iPad and iPhone. She runs the music from her iPad via Bluetooth to her car's speakers when she's driving.
Using basic modern technology is really not that hard. Plenty of older people do it.
Thanks for the effort!

Please note that upgrading from any beta version to RC1 is not supported.
So what happens to those using the beta versions? I have forums using beta. Am I locked out of upgrading?
1- this thread is not for support.
2- however.... no, you would just have to manually upgrade. Open a separate support thread about it.

OTOH my wife is 60 and hopeless at tech stuff.
Age has nothing to do with it.

Thanks. I know people in their 90's who still work on computers, use cell phones, and still have a beer now and then..

Yep... My mother lived with two nerds for almost decades and refused to ever touch anything remotely technological or learn about new things. Finally, at her 50s, she was mildly convinced with a wii and later forced onto a smartphone, which she now uses gladly. Now she stopped saying "this stuff is too hard for me" and so on.
If you don't want to, you don't learn anything.

So true, if you refuse to even try, you never know what you missed.. My wife is 5 years older than me, and if the radio doesn't have knobs on it she can't use it..
I never touched a computer until I retired. I actually picked up on it from my boss, she taught me some simple stuff, got hooked, been learning ever since..
Just wish I had learned some coding, so I could help get smf 2.1 out..
So @ Arantor, when is 2.1 coming out..

That's the spirit :)
It looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer for RC2. I see that an old issue has been reopened.

Looks great but noticed that the latest version of Ezportal isn't compatable with the release candidate version of 2.1

You should direct all your questions about ezPortal compatibility in this thread ;).
Noticed that a few things are missing in this RC.
The Karma thing has gone and big features are missing in the full version.

Yeah, Karma has been replaced with likes. But what are the big features you are missing?
