Title: How does SMF know how to return back to the last topic after logging in?

Curious if it's based on cookies, and if so where are they created and how is their information retrieved?

It should be in session, see LogInOut.php.

Would you happen to know if it continues to store the topic ID data for the user even after registering?

I honestly don’t remember, and even if I did remember, it wouldn’t be in the context of a 13 year old platform where compared to its later versions, has a different registration flow... ;)

Yeah I'll be upgrading soon, after testing all my customization with the new code and  after several of the mods are made available again, but in the meantime I need to figure this out
