Totally new to SMF although I have used Vbulletin 4 a lot and mybb a bit.
The site is all connected but the display is all wrong please see attached. I've probably missed something out but the installation process went without hiccough

This is a known bug in the install process. You can fix the things SMF has misconfigured by using the repair_settings.php tool - What is repair_settings.php? (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Repair_settings.php)
Thanks for that very prompt response. I ran the repair file but to no avail.
Did you press save at the bottom? It doesn't automatically fix - it suggests replacements and lets you confirm they're correct before applying.
You might need to clear your cache before your pc shows the new screen
