When the grey arrows to the right of the screen are clicked the sub-menu is hidden, how can I reinstate this?
when you click on that arrow a menu should appear on the left side of the screen, in that menu on the top should be a similar arrow to click to restore the top menu.
Selecting sidebar menus should not affect dropmenus.
Selecting sidebar menu turns off the drop downs there.
