Title: Avatar displays sideways
Post by: tdennis on November 30, 2019, 07:50:46 AM
I am sure someone has posted this but if so I could not find it in my search results.

I have a member that has uploaded a photo for his avatar and it displays sideways. I saw no settings to correct this. I am wondering if the uploaded photos are always displayed in landscape mode i.e. long sides always top and bottom regardless of position of photos being uploaded.

The problem will be that he uploaded it from a device that automatically corrects for orientation. In other words, he would have taken the shot "sideways", or saved the file "sideways", but not realised this due to the device auto-correcting the orientation. So, when he uploads it to SMF it displays with its true orientation rather than hiding it.

No, it would have been uploaded from a phone where the rotation is actually separate from the image data and desktop browsers never process it correctly. Without a non trivial change to SMF, your option is to download it, rotate it and reupload it. SMF is not ever aware of this.

The rotation is never entirely consistent but is derived from how the given device's camera is oriented inside the device with rotation corrected in software rather than the saved picture data.
