Dear Members,
Simple Machines has released a new patch to the 2.0.x line of SMF, bringing our latest release version to
2.0.17.
We consider this patch to be of crucial importance, as it includes an important fix for a critical bug that was introduced in SMF 2.0.16.
- Fixes a bug that could cause SMF 2.0.16 to start consuming significant amounts of CPU-resources when the RSS function was used.
- Eliminates some deprecated function warnings when using SSI.php on PHP 7.2+.
Please see the changelog (https://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0-17_changelog.txt) for more information.
Since SMF 2.0.17 is essentially what 2.0.16 was intended to be and 2.0.16 was released only a few days ago, we are including a (slightly updated) version of the SMF 2.0.16 announcement for your convenience:SMF 2.0.16 contained
important security and bug fixes, as well as support for the European Union's
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requirements. We recommend updating as soon as possible.
Notable changes in 2.0.16 & 2.0.17
- Support for privacy policy in addition to registration agreement
- GDPR Compliance toggle in Core Features
Enabling this configures multiple settings and new features to comply with the GDPR, including:
- Requiring members to accept the current privacy policy in order to use the forum
- Asking during registration whether the new member wants to receive announcements via email
- Enabling token-based unsubscribe links in emails so members can unsubscribe without logging in
- Allowing members to download a copy of their profile information
- Adjusting the behaviour of a number of other features in minor ways as necessary
- PHP 7.2 support
- Improved security hashes for the image proxy
- Improved security for the login cookie
- Assorted other security improvements
- Various improvements for both the installer and upgrader
Please see the changelog (https://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0-16_changelog.txt) for more information.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- If you are using the GDPR Helper (https://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=4183) mod, you should follow these steps:
- Back up your existing privacy policy text to a file somewhere
- Update the GDPR Helper mod to its latest version
- Uninstall the GDPR Helper mod
- Install the SMF 2.0.16 patch
- Install the SMF 2.0.17 patch
- All users, including the admin, will need to log in again after 2.0.16 has been installed. After logging in, the admin can proceed to install 2.0.17.
How to update to 2.0.17If you are running version
2.0.16, you can update your forum to the latest version by using the package manager. You should see the update notification in the admin panel notifications and in the package manager, which will allow you to download and install the patch seamlessly. If you do not see the notification about the patch, please run the scheduled task "Fetch Simple Machines files" from the Scheduled Tasks page (Admin > Maintenance > Scheduled Tasks).
If you are still running version
2.0.15, you can first patch to 2.0.16 and then patch to 2.0.17 immediately afterwards. We apologise for the inconvenience.
If you use
an older version of SMF, you can upgrade directly to 2.0.17 from whichever version you are currently using by using the "Large Upgrade" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org) page. Be aware that using this upgrade method will require you to reinstall any customizations that you have added to your forum, so if you are running a version of the 2.0.x series, it is recommended that you apply the successive patches instead of using the Large Upgrade.
If you are having problems downloading the patch from the admin panel, you can download the patch package from the Package Manager Updates (https://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) page and install it via the Package Manager, as you would any other mod package.
Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about patching (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Patching) and upgrading (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading).
Language packages for 2.0.16/2.0.17 - Translators wanted!Adding GDPR support required changes to several of SMF's language files in 2.0.16 (and higher). Updates to SMF's supported language packages will become available as the translations of those changes are completed.
If you can help translate these changes into your language, we would love to hear from you! (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=552016.0)Finally, as always, please do
not use this topic for support requests. You will receive a much quicker and better response by posting in the 2.0.x Support Board (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=147.0).
Thank you for using SMF!

Fastest back to back releases ever. A new year's thing? ;)
LOL, just read the topic about a fix coming in a few days. Thanks for the fix! :)
That was fast and think they said they don't release new versions :P He applied it without problems.
Regards!
Thanks! Installed perfectly.
Thank you ;)
Thank you for the speedy RSS fix! :)
Thx !
Thanks!
Not a support topic, just an observation:
The administration control centre still shows 2.0.16 as the latest version so it seems to think that my forum needs updating even though I have just updated to 2.0.17.
2.0.17 was also not shown in the packages area as an available update in the way these patches usually are.
2.0.15 > 2.0.16 > 2.0.17 painless. Thanks Team. :)
Wantsome : I noticed that too but it did correct itself. 2.0.17 package shows toward bottom of installed packages list.
Thanks again but all files are not updated... I assume that "Default templates" are 2.0.16.
SMF Packaged | SMF 2.0.17 | SMF 2.0.17 |
Sources | 2.0.17 | 2.0.17 |
Default Templates | ?? | ?? |
Language Files | 2.0.16 | 2.0.16 |

Thanks for the update just noticed although we all update this forum still shows 2.0.16
It does, we've been so busy getting the patch available to everyone fast that we haven't had the time to install it yet. :)
(In the official manner anyway, we do have the patch running.)
2 releases in quick succession, hopefully this means that 2.1 final will be released in 2020 :D

IMPORTANT NOTES:
All users, including the admin, will need to log in again after 2.0.16 has been installed. The admin can then proceed to install 2.0.17.
Can you explain what this line means? I mean ok, everyone is logged out and have to log in once again, but this gives impression to not proceed with 2.0.17 before all users log in while is 2.0.16. Just pointing on this since it can be confusing.
there are changes to how cookies work, so when you install 2.0.16 it will log you out.

That just means that once the admin logs in, the admin can proceed to install 2.0.17. I'll edit the announcement to remove any confusion.

Always test in production! /s
Restoring faith in SMF's future after the months of php uncertainity, thanks for a great job.
I think we should hold back on releasing new versions before 2050. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

For the older members, that means 10 minutes to 9.
There is a problem.

Happy New Year!!
Thank you for the upgrades.
Everything went well.
Happy New Year !
Well, that was fast. Good job, people. :)
Hello
I've installed 2.0.16 and after that - 2.0.17 and now nothing is shown on the home page - literally. What to do?
1- this topic is not for support. Please open your own support topic in the 2.0 support section.
2- when you do so, provide data... e.g. your URL
3- look at your SERVER error logs.
4- confirm if there were any errors displayed during the "pre-test" part of the patch installation.

It would be an advantage if SMF Version 2.0.* would finally get IPv6 support.

Not really. Barely anyone uses IPv6, it isn't even usable if you switched your routing device to use IPv6 only.

It won't be added to 2.0 since 2.0 is feature locked but it is something under consideration for 2.1.
This should be reconsidered. Times have changed...
SMF 2.0 is still feature locked. we are not changing our minds on that.
This release was a pleasant surprise and we edge closer already to RC3!
Great work team.

Yep, it was always planned to include GPDR support in 2.0.x. Total feature lock. *nods vigorously*
as we have always said: critical issues like major bugs, security etc may be addressed.
IPv6 is not a critical issue - especially since there is a mod for it.
and yes, there was a mod for GDPR, but it was determined to be required in the OOB product. IPv6 is not yet in that state.

The mod has bugs and cannot be installed under SMF 2.0.15 or 2.0.17. Some bugs I could fix https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=440357.msg4044979#new. But not all :-\

I am very well-informed thanks. The link you posted backs up my point. IPv6 support is a waste of time right now, especially for SMF2.0.
Hi all. I'm not new, but I did have to re-register as it's been a while. What would you suggest for upgrading my forum from 2.0.11 to the latest 2.0.17?
I can use the package manager, but I'm so so as far as editing things. I tried to download the upgrade to my pc and use the package manager as I have in the past, but it says the package is empty when I try to upload.
The only forum issues I am having right now is Simpleportal (I know it's a different forum). It's not seeing old posts, but it is seeing new ones. It was seeing the last 10 new posts, then it stopped on it's own.
I think you'll find the topic is not for support requests as it clearly states.

Hello,
I didn't know there is a mod for ipv6. I have migrated the forum from 2.0.15 to 2.0.17 and now I can't access the admin board normally, there is some erreur.
I will seek for the ipv6 mod, but how can I install it if I can't get to the admin board?

Thanks for your time.
Thanks for update. Much appreciated.
I updated all my SMF forums from version 2.0.15 to 2.0.16 and then 2.0.17. Everything was fine EXCEPT one thing in ./Sources/Subs.php which caused warning for one or two of my forums and I'm using custom themes, yes.
Now the solution: I replaced with Subs.php from other working forums ... and VOILA! ;)
Wrong thing to do.
It failed because some mod already changed that portion. By doing what you did, you now probably have partially broken mod(s)
Yes, you're right. Maybe that why after update I switched from PHP 7.1 to PHP 7.3 and I have errors with "Deprecated Create_function" in Load.php and Subs.php
What can I do? I'm still on PHP 7.1
Do I need to install a clean SMF 2.0.17 and to import my DB after?
hi L2,
You really need to create a support topic for that.

I mean on my home page I would like to login to smf through a window that is on the screen how to do it? because as I enter the login and password it directs me to login smf again. And I want that after entering the data in this window, I am the head of the logged user

Since I am not able to access and administrate my forum (my computer is on IP V6) on PHP 7.4; since the mod ip V6 is not installable on 2.0.17 and since you consider it is not critical (I do); what do you suggest ?
Migrate to phpbb ? wait for SMF 2.1 official release which may come one day ?

this is not a support thread....it is best to open your own thread....
that said smf 2.0.17 is not made to work fully with php7.4, lower your php to 7.3 or 7.2 (as some mods are not made to work with 7.3)
why is the mod not installable? Ask for support in the mods support page for further help installing it.
if you are using the httpbl mod, you will need to switch you computers ipv by disabling ipv6, log into your forum, turn off httpbl then switch your computers ipv6 back on....I recently ran into this problem as well, but I still use ipv6 without issues (other than the httpbl mod blocked me out)
while yes you could switch to 2.1x, remember that it is still in rc and not a stable release so there may/will be bugs and it will need to be updated frequently.
any other issues PLEASE START YOUR OWN THREAED thank you.
