Sorry I haven't posted for a while... Basically I am getting inundated with spam posts that have nothing to do with the topic concerned, what is the best thing I can do to prevent this? Captchas don't work if the 'posters' aren't bots, so again, what should I do?
Stop them signing up in the first place.

Thanks, but deciphering verification codes and answering verification questions only works against bots. Also, how can you know who is or who isn't going to be a spammer?
I like asking a reason to join reason on registration.

How does this prevent spam posts? Someone will give a reason, a valid reason, then join the forum and post spam anyway. The only foolproof way I can think of is to delete their account, but this isn't ideal either for all sorts of reasons.

This seams a possible solution, thanks :) Having to wait to be approved could help deter them and make them go elsewhere.

I think it's mainly individuals, but also a few bots as well - difficult to tell. Some of the user names are a bit odd though.
Is it feasible for you to "warn" the individual users, and put them under post moderation if they continue to "spam"?

Depends like on a game forum I mine It helps me tell if some one is legit or not. If someone puts in nonsense i know not to approve them.

Yea that's a good work around, but in the end I just sent the spammers a PM saying they would be banned if they continued posting, er more spam... ::)

I check the IP address of every new member to see if there's a history of spamming or malicious posting

And how are you doing this, based on IP address?
He is checking IPs on google, sometimes can help but usually you can't trust it. Email and 1st post can tell you more about new user nidec, but doing bans before being sure is not wise move. Also there is Track User option on profile, so that might show you range with accounts from the same owner if not bot.
ajac63 send me screenshots when you see it, or if you have problem with more people. I can make you to be their worst experience.
Im not checking them on google.
I use Abuseipdb but there are other companies out there offering the same service.

Ah, never thought of that, good idea, but how exactly does that work?
I copy and paste it into Abuseipdb and they show if anyone else has reported them and what they've been reported for.
^^^ If reason for any doubt I right click ip, click search in google, if it show up in results like cleantalk, stopforumspam etc etc, no doubt.
& the name\email type that's often used, things like (real examples from sfs):
VirgilioLa
[email protected]BerthaMich
[email protected].
charlenezs16
[email protected]miriamuh4
[email protected]FlynnConge
[email protected]etc
Noone in their right mind seeing such crap would ever spend a second wondering if it could be legit.
And still using my question system (30 q, 3 active), not a bot registering for year after year. Millions of attempts.
2 or 3 'human bots' a year = no problem whatsoever.

I might sign-up to Abuseipdb, although spammers might be using machines in libraries, Internet cafes and such so IP addresses will change.
