Hello everyone, I am using siteground for my smf hosting.
This is what is displayed on the memcached settings in the host admin panel
Memcached is an object caching mechanism designed to improve the connection between your application and its database. When enabled, it will improve all the loading speed of all dynamic pages on your site that you can't serve from the Dynamic Caching (checkout pages, dashboards and backends, etc).
Information for connecting to Memcached:
Memcached IP address: 127.0.0.1
Memcached Port: 11211
In the settings of memcahced in smf, there is an option of settings and caching level.
Currently , it is set to level 1, caching.
I checked out the wiki for smf
https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Server_settings
it is mentioned here that we should write the settings in the following format
server1,server2,server:port,server4
What should I write then in the settings option of smf in admin -> server settings-> caching
127.0.0.1:11211
Should I write this?
Also, what level of caching should I use if I am enabling memcached settings?
yes, the IP:port is the way to do it... memcache, unless purposely configured differently, uses port 11211... be certain about your IP- and it stands a good chance of being self (127.0.0.0) but it could be something different... i'm thinking using the IP in your settings.php that speaks to the IP of the database is the one to use. it 'could' and most likely is 'self' (127.0.0.0) but it's better to check it.
insofar as caching levels, the best option is to experiment... i use level 2 and haven't found a single solid reason to use anything else.
memcache(d) can also be used in other ways such as sessions, and i highly recommend that IF you are on a dedicated server- if not DON'T use it for that. it's also tricky to set up on the server if you are using php7+... there may be an RPM available for it and there may not be- which was the case with my apache and mpm-worker set up. if this is greek to you, just pay attention to the first two paragraphs above and forget i mentioned this. heheheheee
