I have noticed that in this forum during registration I receive an email with a link which I have to confirm. Is it possible to also activate that feature for my forum? Currently new users just have to fill the captcha and the security question, but not to confirm the account.

Admin > Registration > Settings, change the registration type from 'immediate activation' to 'email activation'.
Note that even if email is set up correctly, there's always a danger that people won't get the emails.
