Is it possible to set the forum up so that when you revisit a thread it automatically takes you to the last post you read on that thread instead of the beginning of the thread.

Do you mean the last post you haven't yet read?

Clicking the (https://static.simplemachinesweb.com/smf/default/images/english_british-utf8/new.gif) icon will do that, if that's what you mean...
