Title: Restoring backup to newer version
Post by: ghulst on September 15, 2020, 02:54:49 AM
Hi everyone,

New to SMF and I have not been able to find an answer so far...
I am taking over a forum from a previous admin. It will have to be moved to my own hosting etc. The forum currently runs on SMF 2.0.15. My hosting uses softaculous for a quick SMF 2.0.17 install. Can I restore a backup from 2.0.15 into a 2.0.17 installation, or is that asking for trouble and should I downgrade my installation first?

Thanks!

Hey there and welcome to SMF community!

As there was no database changes between 2.0.15 and 2.0.17 versions you should be able to restore it without problems. Just use repair_settings.php file to fix the paths and database info.
What is repair_settings.php? (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Repair_settings.php)

If you spot any problems or you need additional help let us know :)

ideally https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Hosting_-_How_do_I_move_my_SMF_forum_to_a_different_host should be followed instead of doing a new install.

you do have access to obtain all the files along with the attachments users have uploaded, right?

Yes, I have access. Not full FTP, but I do have a full backup from the server, so I should have it all.
I will go over those instructions and see what that does for me. :) Thanks!
