Title: Not sure if this is the right place but...
Post by: justuk on October 08, 2020, 08:42:49 AM
Looking to convert to simple machines. Downloaded the free version to practice on. I noticed there isnt an option to password protect a forum. Is that just with the free version? Can you do it with the full downloaded version? Hope so

Hello there and welcome to SMF community.

Every version of SMF is free, there's no other option :D
Anyway, what exactly you'd like to protect? Directory itself, boards..? Either way, there's an option to do that :)

Like this version..
https://www.smfforfree.com/

If I wanted to make a private forum and password it,there doesn't seem to be an option to do that. unless I'm missing something..

ps....why do I have to do this bloody CAPTCHA every time I post? really annoying,,,or is it a spam defence?

Spam defence.

There is no option in SMF out of the box for password boards because it's really insecure. Much better to use the member groups feature to give people access.

Also, SMFforfree is not us. They just use our software.

Right. Bit cheeky of them.

You have so many great mods and themes! My forum provider has an abysmal selection of themes which pisses me off no end. One reason I'm considering switching.

ps...how long do I have to do the captcha  for to post?

Okey dokey. Fair enough. Now just reading the documentation on how to do what etc. Lots to learn. Many good features, mods and themes. Impressive
