Title: Forum software vs Database
Post by: showngo on January 21, 2021, 04:02:59 PM
Does the database just hold members, post, boards, ect. or does it hold info from the mechanics of the form.

I'm planing a clean install to help with multiple operational errors but if that info is embedded in the Database I'm stuck where I am.

Database contains paths and settings.  What kind of "multiple operational errors" are you experiencing?

Referring URL on login, marking forum read, attempting to post, trying to access PMs, hitting the notify tab.   Probably more that members are not saying.

There was a clean install while the hosting was an IP only.

Then the nameservers updated after and now has the domain name.
From an email I received, the hosting company updated the settings.php file to show the domain in the address bar and updated the SSL certificate.

THEN all the issues started.

Registration is broken as well.  Is that a clean install?  Does it work in Curve?  Did you have pretty urls installed previously?

Was a clean install on the new server, no pretty urls but did update simple portal.    I could not on the old forum but this one ,it installed no issues..

The forum worked 100% when installed during the IP address only.
Now that it is wraponsguild.com this all started.

It's not a theme problem.  Can you pm ftp access?

if the forum was installed using IP and you are now using URL, then you need to reset all URL settings.

Use repair_settings.php

Hostgator support did "things" to the database to try to correct the paths.  This is not encouraging. :P  Waiting for access, if I can get to db maybe it can be fixed.

I can get you on to look at this.  SOOL also has accessim really thinking hostgator screwed something up with the database.

Someone undid the change I made earlier today.  Admin -> Server Settings -> Database and Paths -> Forum URL

It was set to IP url, that was causing the problem.  I changed it to domain url, that fixed it.  Someone changed it back to IP (didn't change itself).

There are still issues but not as many as before.   The main part is people getting on.   But posting is a problem.   they get database error for posting photos (its not the security size one)
and if someone does a copy-paste they get a Subs-Post.php error and looking at the line is shows there is only "array('id_msg')"        That is the same line from sub-post that was on the working site.

I cleared out my CPU and logging in got the refereing URL error again.
it was the domain and not the IP in the address bar.

One difference I see is that the https vs the old site was http.

The host put https security on and I already have a SSL certificate for the domain/forum.

Is there a possibility that those are clashing?   I have ZERO experience with that other than people freaking out when they do not see the little lock symbol even though we have no valuable personal info.

Can you post the exact errors you're getting though?

"Personal info" is email address, username and password, which is used for each login, so yeah..

This is the copy paste one
Incorrect string value: '\x92s Apr...' for column 'body' at row 1
File: /home/weaponsg/public_html/forum/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 1834

The attachment one is just Database error, try again, if you come back to this screen contact an administrator.

The login is unable to verify the referring URL.        I could log in 7 times (Random number) and be fine, then the next time get that .

Im also looking into that there is no redirect for http to https, not sure if that could affect it.

Just got on, will take a look.  What is mediaprocache.php?  It's in /cache and contains a lot of external links.

Brand-new install on a new server.

No freaking clue

Forum url is correct.  I'm not having any problems logging in, posting, pming - everything works normally.  Cleared forum cache, it fills up quickly due to activity, but doesn't look like a caching problem.  Will do clean install in different directory, connect to db, see how it runs.  Would help if I could replicate any of these problems.

Well, when I tried to open your forum it automatically transfer to https, so that looks like it's covered though. Not sure about other pages though, I can only see login page.
Take a look at this manual:
https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=555034.0

Regards your error, is your forum in utf8? If you open phpMyAdmin can you check the collation for the tables?

Edit: Sir Osis of Liver confirmed that the https is not problem in this case, as he can access the whole forum, so ignore that part :)

Looking at some of the formats in the mediaprocache.php, that might be from simple audio/video package
Title: Re: Forum software vs Database
Post by: Sir Osis of Liver on January 23, 2021, 03:38:34 PM
Most tables are latin1_swedish_ci, two cleantalk tables are utf8_unicode_ci, overall collation is shown as utf8_unicode_ci.
Title: Re: Forum software vs Database
Post by: Dzonny on January 23, 2021, 03:45:50 PM
Well, errors like this are mostly caused by wrong collation, so converting to utf8 might help. Make sure you have working backup of files and database before doing that! :)
I have no other ideas what might be wrong though, you may pay attention when the error happen, what content is written in post, for example if there's audio/video, specific smiley, bbc tag or something else...

The theme (Prince of darkness) was a modified theme.  Even though it worked on Godaddy, if it's an issue now ill go with ambassador and be done with it.

Back to production install.  Database is utf8.  Enabled force https redirect for domain.  Everything works for me.   Some of your users may have bookmarked ip url, or it's cached in their browsers.  Are you experiencing problems?

Im running smooth other than that copy paste error sometimes in the Sub-Post .php
but that seems to be fixed as i just did it.
I am not sure about others not being able to post though.

We just had over 1100 members on so I dont think logging in is an issue anymore

Still logging referring url errors, those are usually bots unless you're getting reports of members unable to login.  I disabled forum caching and had to remove fulltext search index to run utf8 convrersion.  You can restore them, but let forum run a while to see if problems have cleared.  Don't think any of this is theme related.

Just added a redirect to .htaccess that redirects IP to domain.  Did the problems start when you migrated to WHM?

Hats off to Sir Osis of Liver.

King Arthur is sitting with his Knights of the Round Table, talking about hard times that have befallen the kingdom ever since the Black Knight stole the Singing Sword. He asks his knights—among them Sir Osis of Liver and Sir Loin of Beef—for a volunteer to get the sword back. The knights complain that the Black Knight has a fire-breathing dragon guarding the sword and is invincible.

He pulled the sword and slayed the forum gremlin.

Thank you greatly

No matter how many times we tell them about size limits on attachments they always try super big cell phone photos.

Many who have had issues are posting that they have been corrected.

It has been a real issue since cell phones take such large photos now
