Dear users,
Simple Machines has upgraded our main site (simplemachines.org) to SMF 2.1 and along with this we have introduced the global theme for our site, based on SMF 2.1's default theme. We have spent many hours working on this upgrade including preparing our site functionality to be compatible with SMF 2.1 changes. We hope you like it as much as we do!
Along with our new main site, we have rolled out our new customize site. This site is still in beta, but has been significantly improved and offers many new features. See our customize site announcement for more information
This has also introduced our wiki site to the compatible theme matching SMF 2.1's default theme. Those who run MediaWiki can download the compatible version of the theme from our GitHub repository as well as our Authentication integration plugin.
Please note that the overall site is not 100% mobile friendly yet at this time. However, SMF 2.1 itself is fully mobile friendly and should operate smoothly while browsing the community forum.
If you encounter any issues with our site (simplemachines.org), please use our Site Comments, Issues and Concerns board to raise a report. Please search this board first to see if your topic was already asked. We will do our best to address any issues as quickly as possible.
Thank you!
Thanks Sleepy and the whole team! Love the new look! Can't wait to try out the new features.
great job guys!
Congrats. It's always better to be on the latest version.
Very good work; thank you so much to the team and everyone who has worked on/contributed to this. :)
So pretty ;) :D
this is going to take some getting used to
and am I crazy or did the site get brighter
woot it's back up and seems to be working, yeah.....
I can see I'm going to have to update my dark theme override for the site. :D
ETA: And I can see some obvious CSS bugs with this new theme already. ;)

You know where to go report them :P
When I cbf'd figuring out fixes for them.
Nice! Thank you. ;)
ps- and where is the "likes" mod enabled? :D
Thanks team, looks great, a bit on the bright side 8) but great job getting it all together.
Exploring all the stuff and finding my way around again.
Where are we reporting found issues?
Great stuff, well done everybody! 8)
Site looks great. :) Keep up the good work guys!
Things are moving forward with SMF. Very good :)
Sorry to be that **** of a person this new update has broken any links I had saved for mods and some mods don't even show up when I search for them.
Couldn't you add a way for users to use the old site for a while they get that used to the new one cause this is pretty much a whole new website and nothing like the old site?
Edited to asterisk out a vulgar word. Even though it had an asterisk in it, please refrain from using it again. ~ Steve

Just got around to looking at that.

Damn, it's one hell of a jumble. Diabolically awkward to scan. Might be ok on a phone when it all stacks, but is a nightmare on desktop.
Looking very good Smf. Well done guys, congratulations :)
Took me a minute ti figure I wasn't logged in :D I really miss the latest Post and unread posts link on the top. This was very helpful. Maybe I simply didn't find em in a new menu or whatever :D
Looking nice so far. Will take some time to get used to it but always like new looks :)
Appreciate the hard work guys. :)

I think a row of 3 would be better instead of 5 images on theme site.

They are a bit more "hidden" and take a bit of getting used to, but they are there.
Wonderful work...
It's about time :)
Nice job SleePy and team
I'm glad they were able to update the entire site, a great job from everyone who collaborated to make this a fact :reír:. Now is to try everything a little and get used to the new format :PAG.
ADD: It's me? or are the emoticons not going in addition to the image of the range I have? :(
ADD 2: :) ;D 8) O :) :reír: : - * It seems necessary to define one or the other and the others if they have 3 characters make a jump it does not look good
Interesting upgrade, congratulations!
I would like to know if the SSI integration articles could still be applied for 2.1:

Finally. Great job. 8)

I didn't see this thread but it was nice to come on this morning and see this. Looks good. :)
Looks too "busy" for my liking. I won't be pushing this theme on my users.
I knew something looked different when I logged in today XD.
Awesome job!

It suffers from the old "Let's present as much data as possible in as little space as possible" mode of thinking. Stripping each block down to the minimum necessary content would be a good start.

That was one of my clever ideas back in Alpha. On reflection, I'm not sure it was a good idea. I find myself looking at the interface and thinking of things that would benefit from redesigning.*
Incidentally, having the Preview button before the Post button in the quick reply is bugging the hell out of me, because I instinctively hit Preview when I want Post. IMO those should be reversed.
The pop-up log in form is also annoying. I'd be killing that one asap in any custom work.
*ETA: At the moment I'm thinking it would make sense to ditch the old date text (because everybody has the date on their phones these days anyway) and put the unread links there instead. Much better. :)

I don't use a mobile phone for dates, times, or anything of the sort ;).
I bet you still know what day it is. :D Do you really need to be told every time you look at the top of the forum wrapper?

Yup. I dont use it on my site nor my next 2.1 themes I'm rolling out soon.
Date and time? Where? Lol it just dawn on me. My first theme was in 2012 or so and I deleted that line lol
Exactly. :D

Just playing around with it. Honestly, even on desktop I think it's better with everything just set to display: block; and the mod/theme blocks stacking down the page. Easier to scan instinctively. Would save some code for phones too.

Someone forgot to enable the setting to hide attachments under the post if they're embedded in the post itself
That would be the setting I was sure should exist, so looked for, but couldn't find anywhere.
Interface design FTW. :P
It's right there under Attachment Settings in the admin center
Lol. Well, sunshine, give me access to the site's admin centre and I'll enable it. :P
Nah.

Ok, yon muppets. Tweaked version of header boxes, with even more betterer code. :D
You could lose some of that code, by dropping superfluous classes from the markup.
/* ------------------------------- */
/* Style godforsaken header boxes. */
#header .site_header_box_container {
padding: 8px 11px 9px;
background: #fff;
border: 1px solid #bbb;
border-top: 0;
border-radius: 0 0 6px 6px;
box-shadow: 0 -2px 0 #fff, 0 2px 3px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.16);
}
#header .site_header_box {
height: auto;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: none;
border: 0;
border-radius: 0;
box-shadow: none;
}

Good job SMF Team
Enormous job! Thanks the team. ;)
Bug fix for this morning's header boxes:
#header .site_header_box_container {
float: right;
}
#header .site_header_box:first-child {
float: left;
}
What bug is that fixing?
It was broken for layout when I checked in this morning. Should have been obvious. .site_header_box_container was full width, and not wrapping the floated content, so content was poking out the bottom.
Although I am thinking it might be better handled with absolute positioning for responsiveness. That way .site_header_box_container would just overlap the logo a bit on some resolutions (not a biggy).
I made changes to that area to fix another bug for smaller screens. It stacks better at 920 resolution. I'm not seeing what you are reporting. What browser and screen resolution?
You on Discord or IRC?
Latest Firefox, on 2560 x 1440. Screeny attached.
No, I'm not on Discord or IRC.
hey_de_ho_3.jpg
ETA: Y'know if you are making changes there anyway, there are superfluous classes in those boxes that are having to be overriden to get this look ~ .floatright and .windowbg could be ditched. Then the CSS could be simplified
uggh.. I hate browsers some days.. I can't reproduce on Firefox on Windows or Mac at that resolution (simulated with dev tools in responsive mode).
Ok hang on. I'll clear my cache and see what happens.
ETA: Yup. Same result. Full width, does not wrap floated content. I'm on W10, by the way.
Can you also try a private browsing with no extensions? Make sure no resources are being blocked.
For fun, I've also checked Firefox on Ubuntu and I can't reproduce it.
Edit, Even tried my phone. I'm out of devices...
Hey just checked with Chrome, which does not have any code for the new site and did not have full cache. It's still showing the original styling, with two separate boxes in different colours, and no styling on the parent div. Beats me what is going on there.
ETA: Private window in Firefox, with no extensions, shows the same as Chrome.
Screeny...
firefox_private_sans_ext.jpg
So the private browsing is showing correct then? It should be 2 boxes with slightly different colors. Language on left because it stacked when you drop to a smaller browser size under the language selection.
Edit,
See your screeny. Thats how it should look. I suspect some extension is fudging with it. You had one for CSS I thought for dark mode? Is it causing it?
Lol. I know what is going on. You haven't changed the original presentation, with the separate boxes, so were are talking about two different things.
I'm talking about this: https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?msg=4094322 :P
ETA: IOW, what is there now in your code is "correct" according to you. But everyone who has commented on the alternative says it is much cleaner. Which it is. But if you want your version, go for it. I'll just run an override.
Incidentally, the main menu looks a lot cleaner without the cheesy icons. :D
/* ---------------------------- */
/* Kill godforsaken menu icons. */
#main_menu .main_icons {
display: none;
}
Ahh that does explain it. But it does poorly on 920 width resolutions.
That would be easy to fix. I can frig around with it later if you like.
Yea it would have too. Right now at a certain point those are hidden (I think 860) but anything under 1000 I think starts to stack it since it doesn't fit.
Simplified layouts for the Customize site. I find these easier to scan, and coding is simpler too.
simple_mods.jpg
simple_themes.jpg
simple_patches.jpg
TBH, I strongly prefer the existing design...
Lol. I strongly don't. :D I'll just run whatever I like anyway,
Quote from: SleePy on August 18, 2021, 07:48:31 PMYea it would have too. Right now at a certain point those are hidden (I think 860) but anything under 1000 I think starts to stack it since it doesn't fit.
It works well on any res if .site_header_box_container is absolute positioned and I reduce the padding a bit. Even looks better on widescreen with the reduced padding.
/* ------------------------------- */
/* Style godforsaken header boxes. */
#header {
position: relative;
}
#header .site_header_box_container {
position: absolute;
right: 0;
float: right;
padding: 0 9px 7px;
background: #fff;
border: 1px solid #bbb;
border-top: 0;
border-radius: 0 0 6px 6px;
box-shadow: 0 -2px 0 #fff, 0 2px 3px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.16);
}
#header .site_header_box {
height: auto;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
background: none;
border: 0;
border-radius: 0;
box-shadow: none;
}
#header .site_header_box:first-child {
float: left;
}
And half of that code is only necessary to override the existing .windowbg and .floatright classes in the markup. If the markup was changed to this:
<div class="site_header_box_container">
<div class="site_header_box">
<form action="https://www.simplemachines.org/search.php" method="post"></form>
</div>
<div class="site_header_box">
<form id="languages_form" method="get" class="floatright"></form>
</div>
</div>
Then CSS could be reduced to this:
/* ------------------------------- */
/* Style godforsaken header boxes. */
#header {
position: relative;
}
#header .site_header_box_container {
position: absolute;
right: 0;
float: right;
padding: 0 9px 7px;
background: #fff;
border: 1px solid #bbb;
border-top: 0;
border-radius: 0 0 6px 6px;
box-shadow: 0 -2px 0 #fff, 0 2px 3px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.16);
}
#header .site_header_box {
float: left;
}
Hows that. Still different from what you had, but holds better over smaller screen resolutions
That's basically what I have. Looks fine now.
ETA: Just changed reply after doing another refresh.
You may have your ad blocker active. I had to move a few things around to keep the ads looking good.
Yep, ad blocker is active. TBH I haven't even looked into how to turning it off in Firefox. Its just on by default, so I left it alone. I don't even know where the switch is. You'll probably find most users are the same these days. :D
Why is the mentions system disabled in this forum?
Because other things are being tested first. :)

They are a bit more "hidden" and take a bit of getting used to, but they are there.
Thanks Aleksi :) Once you are logged in that is no problem. But on a 1st quick view there is no visible difference between being logged in or not. First two or three times I didn't really relize that there ist a menu on the very top. Visibly the forum starts where the SMF header is located. So I simply didn't see the top menu. Now that I know where to look at I find the recent and latest post quick. All good now for me. :)

Did you know there is a z-index bug with the site menu on narrow screens? Easy to fix. Just needs z-index: 1; on the mobile pop-up. :)
Hey you haz a bug with your inline stylesheet here. This one:
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en-US">
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://static.simplemachinesweb.com/smf/smsite/css/index.css?smf21rc4_1629640404">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://static.simplemachinesweb.com/smf/default/css/jquery.sceditor.css?smf21rc4_1629640404">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://static.simplemachinesweb.com/smf/smsite/css/responsive.css?smf21rc4_1629640404">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://static.simplemachinesweb.com/smf/smsite/css/smsite.css?dev1629950641">
<style>
.signature img { max-width: 500px; max-height: 200px; }
That last line borks things if someone has a 500px wide sig image, but the viewport is too narrow to show the image at full width. It forces a horizontal scroll bar. If you want a test case take a look at any one of Gwenwyfar's posts (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?msg=4062461) on a narrow screen.
To fix it, use the same CSS syntax you used a couple of lines down, with CSS min() to set the max-width.
.signature img { max-width: min(100%,500px); max-height: 200px; }
That will work. :)
Looking good. :D
Why is the old emoticons set used in the forum?
You can change the smiley set in the Look and Layout section of your profile. There is no set named "default" in 2.1 so the images from the one in 2.0 are still used.
Yeah :) great job 8)

I understand, but why here on the forum in the settings isn't possible to select the fugue set? These are newer SMF 2.1 emoticons.
That would be a question for
@SleePy or
@LiroyvH
@SleePy Why is it not possible to select an emoticon fugue set?
jsx,
It is possible to select the Fugue smiley set.
