Does Curve2 in SMF 2.1 no longer use backdrop.png?
I'm running 2.1 RC4. I'm trying to stick with the default theme for broadest mod compatibility (I'm using a bunch of mods)... just changing the colors a bit using a mod for that (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=4231) and otherwise trying to leverage built-in Curve2 functionality vs. using a 3rd-party theme or a manually hacked-up copy of Curve2.
One thing I wanted to experiment with is setting a repeating/tiled background image. It seems that once upon a time there was a "backdrop.png" image used in Curve/Curve2 that one could just modify for this purpose that was already referenced in index.css however in looking at things now that doesn't appear to be the case. Was that removed, or was the functionality moved somewhere else?

It's just a background color now. You'd have to add your own image now and set it up in the index.css

Bummer. It'd be nice to see this as a single option field under Theme Options. Just like the logo.
This is how I fixed mine at bikerhound.com:
