Title: Can topic startes edit their own topics in Other Paid Services/Items for sale
Post by: Doug Heffernan on January 29, 2022, 06:14:35 AM
Can topic startes edit their own topics in Can topic startes edit their own topics in  Other Paid Services/Items for sale forum?

The way it is now one can not edit their own topic(s) in that forum after a while.

I have posted a topic there and now I have made a few changes to the mod that I am selling, but I can not edit the original post and update it with the new details and attachments.

Can you please consider allowing us to edit our own topics in that forum? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Would make sense IMO, will look in to it. (You won't believe how complicated our permission sets are. :D )
For now, if you want something changed you can report your post with the requested change.

Actually, when I had that forum set up, it was set up that way, specifically to prevent a bait and switch (designed to help protect the end users).

I would hate to see this policy changed, honestly.

Okay, sadly I don't think this is easily possible. You do have permission to edit your own posts, but because the time limit for edits is forum wide, you would need higher permissions to edit after the time limit. Any change would have gone through the team anyway, and I would not have been comfortable to just change this on my own.

This is a good point as well, didn't think of that. Though, if we did remove the time limit the current permissions would actually allow editing.

What do you mean by that, bait and switch? Can you please explain?

No worries. Thank you for looking into it though.

Bait and switch in this context: something gets posted that is harmless, approved by the team because it looks safe, and is then later changed through editing to a be something quite different.

The expression in general is that it's a trick, where the trickster lays out a good thing (the bait) but when anyone actually goes to take it up they find what they get isn't nearly as good, because it's been switched out for something else.

I see what you mean. It makes sense, but a better solution imho is to place the first post in moderation again once it has been edited, rather than closing off the edit completely. It will cut down on multiple posts whenever something new has been added.

Anyways, thank you for the explanation Arantor. I will mark this as solved.

I'm not sure you can actually do that off hand. I don't remember if editing a post that, on creation would have been moderated, returns it to moderation - at least in SMF. (My world is so blurred now I can't remember.)

Not with the current permissions no. I guess it will require custom coding to set it up that way.

I would argue against that for the same reason Douglas brought up.

@Doug Heffernan - If you posted (or in my case, even PM'd me) the changes you want, a team member will do it for you, as Lex indicated.

Oh, I'm not suggesting we remove the limit - I know it's there for a reason and while I don't like it, I agree with the reasoning.

Thank you. I will do that.

While it is a tiny inconvenience not to having the option to update the original post with the new changes, the reasoning behind the limit is very valid. I did not know why it was set up like this, but now I know.

Thank you to all who took the time to reply and explain things. Much appreciated.

... which would add more work to an already overworked team. Not sure that's the best route to go.

I agree. Especially now with 2.1. final, hopefully, around the corner.
