Title: SMF 2.1.0 Released
Post by: Sesquipedalian on February 09, 2022, 12:42:51 PM
Dear Members,

Simple Machines is pleased to announce the official release of the long awaited SMF 2.1.

This release marks the transition of SMF 2.1 into the current stable release of SMF. This means that:

Notable changes in 2.1

The changes between SMF 2.0.x and SMF 2.1 are too many to count, but here are a few highlights:

You can learn more about the many new features and changes in SMF 2.1 here (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Differences_between_SMF_2.1_and_SMF_2.0).

How to install a new SMF 2.1 forum

You can install SMF 2.1 using the "Full Install" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org/) page.

Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about installing (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Introduction_to_installing).

How to upgrade to SMF 2.1

You can upgrade to SMF 2.1 from any previous version using the "Large Upgrade" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org/) page.

Be aware that upgrading to SMF 2.1 will remove any modifications you may have installed on your existing SMF forum, and that SMF 2.1 is incompatible with custom themes designed for earlier versions of SMF. You will need to install new versions of those modifications and/or themes after upgrading. Many modifications and themes have already been updated by their authors to support SMF 2.1, but you may wish to check the status of individual modifications or themes before proceeding.

Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about upgrading (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading).

With this release we'd like to take the opportunity to recognize the effort and dedication of all the people who have volunteered their time to help the SMF project. We would like to thank everyone, past and present, who has contributed to the development of SMF over the past years.

Finally, as always, please do not use this topic for support requests. You will receive a much quicker and better response by asking for help in the SMF 2.1.x Support (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=254.0) board.

Thank you for using SMF!

Regards,
Simple Machines

So... when will 3.0 be done?  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D

Thank you and congratulations to everyone at SMF!

I upgraded my forum from 2.0 to 2.1 RC4 last October and, today, to 2.1 final. Everything went smoothly by using the "Large Upgrade" package and doing a manual copy of files.

Just a simple question - going forward will future 2.1.x updates also have to be applied in the same way?

From the interactions of 1s and 0s to the interactions of protons and electrons there is a large gap, ;-) but yes 2.1 is a good leap forward.

A couple of people asked about upgrading from SMF 2.1RC4, so this is only a reminder.
Using Release Candidates! (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=570377.0)
"It is also important to note that between release candidates, SMF does not release update packages."

This means the Large Upgrade must be used. The Full Install package is not necessary on an existing SMF2.1RCx installation, and will likely delete your "Settings.php" file, so BACK IT UP!!!

Upgrading (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading)
"Please note that when using the large upgrade, all the mods that you have installed will have their edits to files removed."

I had a few themes installed on my smf2.1RC4 installation. After the Large Upgrade, they were gone. Apparently, the Large Upgrade package replaced the "Themes" directory ("Folder"), but that is OK. One of the themes did not work as planned, so I may try to re-install that one to see if I messed up.

Backing up your files before doing a Large Upgrade will allow you to keep, and then re-apply, any file edits that you made.

I'm guessing you can't do the easy method of installing via the package manager.

An Error Has Occurred!
Package upload failed due to the following error:
"Although the package was downloaded to the server it appears to be empty. Please check the Packages directory, and the "temp" sub-directory are both writable. If you continue to experience this problem you should try extracting the package on your PC and uploading the extracted files into a subdirectory in your Packages directory and try again. For example, if the package was called shout.tar.gz you should:
1) Download the package to your local PC and extract it into files.
2) Using an FTP client create a new directory in your "Packages" folder, in this example you may call it "shout".
3) Upload all the files from the extracted package to this directory.
4) Go back to the package manager browse page and the package will be automatically found by SMF."

This not a patch so you have to download the large upgrade.

You can upgrade to SMF 2.1 from any previous version using the "Large Upgrade" package from the Download page.

Quick question, is 2.0.19 the final, last ever release of the 2.0.x with any future releases only being 2.1.x versions?
Title: Re: SMF 2.1.0 Released

No. 2.0.x will continue to receive security patches for some time. However, it will not be receiving any new features. Security patches only, and only as necessary.

That said, I would expect to plan in a move to 2.1 at some point in the future. There will come a point that keeping 2.0 running on newer PHP will just get harder and harder to the point of "not worth the hassle", just as with 1.1.
