Title: SMF 2.1.2 Released
Post by: Sesquipedalian on May 09, 2022, 12:33:55 PM
Dear Members,

Simple Machines is pleased to announce a new patch for the 2.1.x line of SMF, which pushes the version number to 2.1.2.

We consider this patch to be of crucial importance, as it includes security updates.

Notable changes in SMF 2.1.2

Please see the change list on GitHub (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/milestone/12?closed=1) for more information.

How to update to 2.1.2

If you are currently using version 2.1.1 you can perform the update using the Package Manager (Administration Center > Package Manager). There you should see a notification about 2.1.2, including a "update your forum" link. If you do not see this notification in the Package Manager, please run "Fetch Simple Machines files" from the Scheduled Tasks page (Administration Center > Maintenance > Scheduled Tasks), and then try again.

If you are currently using version 2.1.0, you can use the process described above to apply previous update patches successively until you reach version 2.1.2.

If you are currently using any older version of SMF (including SMF 1.x, SMF 2.0.x, or one of the SMF 2.1 Betas or RCs), you can upgrade directly to 2.1.2 from whichever version you are currently using by using the "Large Upgrade" package from the Download (https://download.simplemachines.org/) page. Be aware that using this upgrade method will require you to reinstall any customizations that you have added to your forum, so if you are running SMF 2.1.0 or higher, it is recommended that you apply the successive patches instead of using the Large Upgrade.

If you are having problems downloading the patch from the admin panel, you can download the patch package from the Package Manager Updates (https://custom.simplemachines.org/upgrades/) page and install it via the Package Manager, as you would any other mod package.

Please refer to the Online Manual for more details about patching (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Patching) and upgrading (https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Upgrading).

Finally, as always, please do not use this topic for support requests. You will receive a much quicker and better response by posting in the 2.1.x Support Board (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=254.0).

Thank you for using SMF!

Regards,
Simple Machines

Just for future ref, the enabled compressed output bug should also have been addressed in 8.0.19 and 8.1.6 mainline releases.

How strange I still see 2.1.1, the most current version on my panel, I suppose it needs time, also a great job by all 8) . Now it's time to translate the news :P!

QuoteSMF file version (2.1.1) does not match SMF database version (2.1.2).
Run the SMF upgrader to fix this.
More information.

On uploading the patch to the package manager.

That's good to hear. But unfortunately we'll still need to keep our workarounds in SMF's code until whenever PHP 8.0.x and 8.1.x reach EOL.

I was thinking more that the fix might be targeted to only those versions.

I suppose we could do that, but the workaround introduced in 2.1.2 is compatible with other PHP versions, so I'm not sure we need to bother targeting it. Of course, we can always revisit the matter if there does turn out to be a good reason to bother. Probably in another topic, though. :)

Thanks for all the efforts and taking care of the security flaws to be fixed.

After spending a lot of time to get the outdated SMF Forum, which I administrate to Standard SMF 2.1.1, the update took me exactly 5 seconds.

Great stuff. Super happy about it and this is really comfortable and easy out of the admin center.

Kind Regards
Christian

Good job. The fix about getting the right image ratio is appreciated.
I was able to upgrade from 2.1.1 to 2.1.2 just using my smartphone. Having a very quick and smooth upgrade process makes my life so much easier. Probably not the most recommended option in case something goes wrong, but I couldn't resist the temptation.

As my good friend Doug says ... indeed. A little risky but I'm glad it worked out well for you.

hi, thank you, the new tools are very awesome...

i would like to ask, whether the sub-board is a new feature or not, or maybe i am missing it before?

it will so perfect for the newest version, many difference, tiny and pretty.

only missing hashtag function alone, since many sns platform, hashtag is convenience to use at community of sns.

thanks for contribution, i now focus on the usage of sub-board function.

sub boards have been around since before 1.0...  They were previously called Child Boards

Hashtags, as already explained are really complicated and are less than useful on a forum platform.

Post Topic (aka prefix) List on the other hand exists and is more useful than random hashtags

We took our forum down about 15 months ago because "reasons."  It was using 2.0.17 at the time.  I didn't pay any attention to SMF while we were down.  We happily were able to bring our forum back online yesterday, fully updated to 2.1.2, which I had never seen in action.  I just thought I'd post here and give a tip of the hat to all of the people who worked to make 2.1 happen.  It's such a radical advance from 2.0 and it really surprised me how much more advanced it is.  I haven't had a ton of time to mess with 2.1 yet, but every time I log in I find another example of something that has improved.  Very nicely done.

More than 20 years using (http://web.archive.org/web/20020603180011/http://tantra.netfirms.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl) this platform - always elegant and efficient. Now lightning-fast too.

Thank you for the life-long service, guys. And I mean it. Many of those who shared their thoughts 20 years ago have sadly passed away, but the memory of them is still alive. Thanks to SMF.

Just my 2c worth.

I've been a multi forum admin for a couple of decades now. From a "clunky" beginning, SMF has matured into my goto forum s/ware. Open source and free, what's not to love?

Great job SMF team, thank you.
