Title: Notifications
Post by: Dave J on August 09, 2022, 03:57:38 AM
Today I went to my test site, which is currently being used to test the quiz.

I was amazed to see a reply from a post I made but had not got an email for although I had set the topic notification to 'Receive emails and alerts'

Upon looking in >Profile>Notifications - I see that the checkboxes 'When a topic I follow receives a reply, I normally want to know via...' were not ticked, in fact the only option for emails that is pre ticked is 'When a reply is made to my unapproved topic' under 'Posts'
Also looking in >Profile>Look and Layout>Posting - the checkbox for 'Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic' is also not ticked.

Now I can understand that by not checking the later option you'd get nothing, but if that option is selected then surely when you select the 'Receive emails and alerts' for a post it should register and tick the relevant boxes in the Notifications.

It just seems to me that there are so many steps for members to go through before they get alert/emails etc.

What say you?

there are other sorts of notifications...

and, if you say "I want notifications when I post to a topic" --   how is the system supposed to know WHAT SORT of notifications you agree to without a specific choice being made?

Kindred

If I activate 'Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic' in my Profile, then I would expect that when I select 'Receive emails and alerts' on a post the system would know which choice I have made, as I have requested
'Receive emails and alerts' notifications, both emails and alert are requested.

If I set the

Maybe I am misunderstanding your use case...

You check "notify me when a topic I posted to has updates"
but you have NOT YET selected what kind of notifications you want.
(for example, I most definitely do NOT want to be notified by email, by default, EVER!)

Or - are you saying that you DID check the "notify by email" AND the "notify me when", and you are still not getting emails?

I think I'm missing something here Kindred

In my profile under look and layout/posts 'Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic' is checked. See image.

Now I go and create a post in a forum and once posted, I then select 'Receive emails and alerts' at the bottom of the post.

I would expect to get an alert and/or email if someone replies to my post.

But that wont happen because I also have to select 'When a topic I follow receives a reply, I normally want to know via... '

What I'm saying is why is the later option necessary when I've already selected the option under the post to receive the email notifications.

Is clicking on the 'Receive emails and alerts' below the email classed as following or not?

because that one in the profile is a global setting.  You have to specify which sort of notifications you want to receive.  After that, everything that you select "notify me" will use the defined method.

Thank you for the explanation Kindred
