Hi all.
I run a small Danish forum, https://frylundsmaskinforum.dk/fagteori/index.php/ where one.com has advised me that PHP7.4 is turning obsolete.
I was trying to upgrade by means of the large upgrade, to 2.1.2, but without success.
I unzipped the files locally and copied them to my forum folder on the server like described.
Just got the HPPT ERROR 500. Restored from my backup, everything is fine again.
I get the same message again, when I switch to PHP8.0 or 8.1 on one.com's control panel.
Tried following the advice in this thread but not working still :

I am running Danish language on the forum. Read somewhere that this might need to be disabled first, before upgrading the to 2.1.2, is that true?
Any other ideas of why this is giving me so much trouble? Thx for your support. :)

Did you run the upgrader as well? Have a look at this guide on how to do a proper large upgrade:

The errors in that topic were caused by a third party mod.

You can try to set the default lnguage to english temporarily till your forum is upgraded.
Yes, tried running the upgrade.php with the same result. Both through the browser, and through the control panel. Same result.
I'll try to switch to English, and then I might try to disable the mods one by one if that is not enough.
Switching back to PHP 7.4 normally brings back the forum within 20-30 minutes. So the functionality of the forum should still be intact. :)

Let us know how it will go.
Hello, am on one.com as well (12+ happy years btw), and am using php 8.0 without any issues on 2 forums.
Tested 8.1, which produced a few entries in error log, but forum itself continued working 100%.
2.0.19, default theme & few mods.
Maybe some mod is the source of the php problem ?
Will upgrade to 2.1.x, but as 2.0.19 works so well here will wait for a while, maybe when 2.1.3 arrives.
Great info. :) Switching to English language as default didn't help. :) I'll try removing the mods.
Any errors in the error logs for either PHO or MySQL?
I have tried to remove all mods, and it seems to run ok now. Tomorrow I'll try to reinstall the mods one by one.
A huge thx for the support. Much appreciated. :)
Have a great day!

Glad to see that the issue has been identified. Good luck with the upgrade and let us know if you will require further assistance.

You are most welcome :) Have a great day/evening as well.
Well, upgrade still isn't possible. I'll settle with 2.0.19 for now. :)
Now on to installing the mods again.
New kind of error.
I have no idea how to fix this. ???
Bottom or side scroll prohibited
It started out with pictures couldn't be uploaded.
Any way to remove mods without access to the site?
Not really, you need to manually fix or revert the changes

A bit more alive. :)
Any tips & tricks now?
A huge thank in advance, I'm in the deep in here.

I see some errors there are related to a thank you mod. Try to disable/uninstall it and see if the errors will go away.
Trouble is that when I enter the page I get the above picture. Other users can access. Using my wifes phone I could see all of the page. Logging in, same as above. Could my user be corrupt?

The error happens only to your account? Other users and guests do not see that error?
It seems other users have the same issue upon logging in. Without the page displays apparently ok.
Did a visit, forum main page & boards loads fine.

ps, still 100% ok here with php 8.0, only source of errorlog entries is hostname lookups, had to disable that one (zero importance for the good running of the forum) = can relax regarding 7.4 going away, and await the right time (and a dose of inspiration) to move to 2.1.x
sounds like you may need to load fresh files and delete all hooks at this point. or upgrade to SMF 2.1

What Illori said.
Thx.
Just copy a fresh set of files to the folder?
Deleting hooks done by repair_settings.php?

Yes, that is correct. Do not upload the upgrade files though when doing the refresh as having them in your forum root poses a security risk.
I'm in the deep here.
Tried installing a backup from last week, still acting like crazy.
Like you saw, when not registered, the page seems fine. Opening it in a private browser does the same thing.
I'll try to list my attempts.
Backup from 2022-09-15 did not change much. Same issue.
Backup from 2022-09-19 Same issue.
Tried uploading the upgrade package to the folder, and overwrite the existing. Then repair_settings did not work.
Trying to install a fresh forum re-using the database also screwed things up.
Could I be having some database issues?
Wouldn't it be possible to do a fresh install and re-use the database?
Or would I need to make a copy of it, and rename it?
I am on the verge of trying something other than SMF, but our forum is quite old, 15 year actually. I would hate to loose the history.
I migrated it from a SMF 1.1.2 version in 2017. Now it just causes me tremendous problems.
Quote from: slnielsen on September 28, 2022, 12:47:31 PMTrying to install a fresh forum re-using the database also screwed things up.
Can you please tell us how did you try this and how were things screwed up?
Looking at the error message in the screenshot that you posted, it seems to be caused by a mod.
If you refreshed all your forum files and disabled all the hooks should uninstall all your mods. When you did this, did you get the same error again, the one about the thank you mod, or did you get other/different errors?
I changed the status to your topic as not solved as well, to give it more attention.
I restored a backup, that seems to work 95% as long as not logged in.
I then downloaded the upgrade package, unzipped it locally
Ran repair_settings and unhooked everything.
Using FileZilla I removed the write protection on the installer files.
Copied all upgrade files and folders to my server, in the same folder as the forum is installed.
Prompted "overwrite all files" I chose yes.
Ran the installer and got various errors. Chose to continue, but the forum seemed unreachable, multiple errors.
I could really use a hand here, if anyone has half an hour to have a private teams meeting or alike, to explain me what I am doing wrong here.
Why are you running the installer or upgrade files? Don't.
Copy the clean set of files only.
That may be the first of my many mistakes. :) I'll try right away, thx
This is the files in the smf_2-0-19 install file.
When all are copied, should the repair_settings be run? Index.php just start the installation.
Tried fumbling around myself. :)
I copied the yellow marked files to my forum folder.
Ran repair_settings and added the database name and PW.
Same issue.
Quote from: slnielsen on September 29, 2022, 07:40:57 AMThis is the files in the smf_2-0-19 install file.
For refreshing your forum files, itt is better to use the files from the large upgrade file and not the ones from the install package. Otherwise your Settings.php file will be overwritten.

It is a bit unclear to me what you are doing. All you have to do, as mentioned numerous times previously, is to overwrite your forum files with those from the large 2.0.19 upgrade paqckage, minus the upgrade files and disable all the hooks using the repair_settings.php file.
Whereas you are doing the complete opposite, using the install package, recreating the Settings.php file, running the upgrader etc etc.
IT WORKS!
I clearly got every thing screwed up! I have downloaded so many copies of the different packages over the last days, so honestly I was starting to loose the oversight.
Thanks a lot for your patience. Now to make a fresh back up, and open up a beer. ;)

Whew :D Glad to see that everything is fine now. I will be marking this as solved.
And pass the beer ... :P
