Is there any setting that can be done in 2.1 so that the menu in the administration center can be changed to a vertical one as it was in older versions of SMF?

no this feature was removed. if you search on the forum i think a few people posted ways to restore it in someway. i think it was posted in chit chat board.

In reply #20 there's an update with a fix :P
Keep in mind that doesn't replace the current admin menu. It adds a sidebar menu which some find easier.
I will keep that in mind. Thank you guys, I was trying to find it before asking but no success.

If you're using a theme other than Curve2, will require some css to make it match.
This is working perfectly for my forum, and i would like to mention that in my case this mod replaced the drop-down menu.
I'm really happy with the results.
