It is with great satisfaction and pleasure to announce that we have released Beta 4 of SMF to our Charter Members. Once again, we would like to thank them for all of their help throughout the beta process as well as everyone who has supported us through this transition from YaBB SE. As we have said before, this will be released to the public shortly after we are sure it is ready. The next release will not be a complete feature freeze until we reach the release candidate stage of the public process. This public release will be more or less identical to Beta 4 but minus any bugs found. We still have a few ends to tie up in terms of documentation and the daunting task of choosing a default theme but in terms of stable code, we are there. While I cannot give you an exact timeframe for this public release, we are very close.
Thanks again for all of your support, feedback, ideas, and generally being a great community!
Again, this is the version the public will also get (it's a beta remember) but we're keeping with our policy of Charter Member release first which will also help u s catch any glaring errors that we need to correct. It will be much easier to answer 100 requests about the same bug than several hundred :)
So, it draws very near and the wait is almost over :)
Sorry, I felt the need to clarify a few sentences so people wouldn't get mad about this and that. (so easy to misunderstand things when you're doing it on purpose.)

well if you get bored, you can go look at my music database mod that I have been working on...

:) very cool mod Cheschire , would be good for movies to
okay... my comments:
#1
It is so much faster. Posting, accessing sites. Whooooohoooo. Well done.
#2
Finally the permission center isn't such a pain anymore. This rocks.
#3
Very impressed with template system. This comes really handy and I find it much more understandable and less likely to F*** up than the way it was done in YabbSE. I just made two templated after the new standart and it was much nicer to do than ever before.
Congrats on that one.
#4
The calendar data did not get converted right. I had to delete all my events and post them again. Assume the upgraded.php made an error?
#5
Like the individual stats for every user being accessibly from the profile. Neat ;)
Wicked Sick! Cant wait till it goes public!
If anyone is having trouble with their calendar data, please send me a copy of your calendar and calendar_holidays tables..... the ones that are messed up. If you have working ones from -3.1415 they would help to.

You know I thought about that actually... If I get to the point where I am very happy with how this database works, I was thinking about expanding it into movies, books, etc. A media database if you will...
great , a media database, I can sure see some use for it. I think you would have a very powerfull mod there :D
I will think how to come up with a reason to implement the music database to my site, before my next staff meeting... a hostel and a musicdatabase.... hmmm why not ;)

I like it! Would there be anyway to set it up so forum members could add data? (That way I don't have to do it all myself :P)
yep. i just set it up with SMF permissions yesterday, and now its just a matter of going through and sectioning off parts of the admin page so that you can give certain groups only the ability to edit lyrics, and give other members the ability to add everything.
There are two pages, admin and view.
The view page has 2 permissions right now, and will have 3 permissions before hte next release. Right now it's View, which controls access to the page. The other is Rate, which allows users to rate items on a 5 star system. The next permission to be added will be reviewing, when I add the ability to write full text reviews of items in the database.
The admin page will have modify, add, and delete rights. if you have any those, then you will be allowed to access the admin page but only for those rights that you have.
btw sorry to anyone who tried to view it today. I turned off access while i was working on it. I didnt want anyone trying to rate things and destroying the whole database ;)
tought of another thing you could do with your mod :D
building a database of cool free and opensource proggies :)
I think this mod has a lot of potential ;D

Yeah what I may end up doing is making it a REALLY generalized mod, where the admin will choose the columns, what they are called, what data is entered into each column, the size of the column, etc.
The music one is coming along nicely as it is, and it has a lot of details that would not fit into the generalized mod i mentioned above, however both mods are useful.

seems many people feel like this. I really can not understand why announcements are being made that the Forums at YaBB SE will be closing when simple machines is not even released. All of our forums run YaBB but we can not bother doing development work until we see what simple machines will do. There is no way we can see if we wish to stay as we are or go for the change and the delay after delay is really just not acceptable.
Please set a date and let us all get on with the rest of our lives and tasks. Oh and yes I do appreciate the effort that goes into making free programs but I do not like the eliteism that seems to run with SM, some of us just can NOT afford to become charter members especially at such a late stage!
They are just giving advanced notice to YaBBSE being closed down, which in my opinion is better than just taking it down suddenly and nobody know what is going on. SMF will be released soon, so it isn't like they are just cutting off YaBBSE with no alternatives.
Well, considering SMF is in it's final Charter beta before being released for public beta. They've said that YaBB SE is closing on the 31st March.
Maybe they're confident that there will be a public release by then?

even when YABSSE is closed down you still have a good product up and running: there haven't been many bugs reported around the 1.5.5 (except the post.php one) - so don't worry too much about that. I am quite sure that there will still be a couple of helpful hands for yabbse around, regardless whether the official website is closed down or not.
If SMF can convince me, I will move - if not, I will stay with yabbse.
I don't understand what the big deal is, if it bothers you that much, think of SMF as YaBB SE 2.
True. you could even apply the Classic YABB SE Theme and people would never see the difference, visually at least...
Actually I am not bothered at all - as long as I have an easy upgrade I don't care if it is yabbse or smf (or any other forum with similar functionalities).
But I can understand that some people might be worried about the future of their highly modded yabbse boards......
Anyway, I am waiting for the public launch of SMF to have a look 8)
Well - considering several popular MOD's are included into SMF and nearly all other big mods were written by people who are either members of the development/mod development team or are forum members here I expect to see most big MOD's to come out fairly soon (hell there are even about 10 MOD's available in the charter area)

one way you can see what SMF will do, is by perusing this forum, and testing it's features. for admins, from what i've heard, it's highly customizeable through features like "the new template system", so that you may not need all kinds of mods to get what you want out of it.
in the mean-time, i'm still hacking away at my 1.5.4. any experience you get from that will benefit you in the long run.
Okay, one of the big differences between YSE and SMF is the themes. This is a big generalization but imagine going through all of YSE, and taking out the html and page code, and moving it to a theme directory, and giving people the option of which directory to pull the html from. next, fix all the big security holes in YSE, and add a permission system that is more powerful than any other forum software out there. Those are just some generalizations of what has changed, but its like comparing a Playstation 2 with a Playstation. The pieces are compatible but its the new stuff thats really impressive.
Hi there! I'm really excited to try out the beta. I signed up for the charter membership yesterday. Just wondering how long it takes to get added so i can download the new forum? ;)
it takes only until Jeff manually updates you, and that varies, depending on when he is online, etc.
Sorry for anyone waiting a long time lately, the notification emails haven't been coming through. If you end up waiting a day just PM me and I can flip the switch for anyone.
you may want to post a new thread about that :o
how can I get a picec of the source code of SMF
Well there are 2 ways... buy a charter membership... or wait for it to be released to the public.
Either that or I would to say know a developer or admin here or something like that. ;D
Hey gang - I'm the new kid here and still relatively uninformed. I have yabbse and since it is for my business, decided it was smarter to move to SMF for the long term.
I signed up for a charter membership but cannot seem to find the download. Help a gnoob out will ya?

Sorry man, not quite. But at least it's an explanation... nothing I can do right now to fix it, though.

Well I saw that but I got a letter acknowleging payment so I kinda figured the download stuff was just buried somewhere. I dropped a note to Jeff though since thats what he says to do in that thread.
As Jeff is Canadian and does each charter activation my hand, you can probably expect it to be activated in about 4 to 6 hours (because thats when he will be waking up)... of course that is providing he does it when he wakes up... but it shouldnt be too long anyway.
Hope you enjoy your charter membership ^^
Hmmm...
Time since last Charter Member Release: 24 days
Time until YaBB SE board closes: 22 days
So, since SMF will be out before the YaBB SE board closes (most likely several days before then), I would say that SMF should be here sometime in the next week or two... :P
Unless as someone mentioned smf is just one big april fools joke.
;D
yeah this is all just a new theme laid on top of vbulliten 3
