After using SMF 1.1rc1 for a month or so I firmly believe that the following features should not be 'mods' but rather be built into SMF:
1. Searching Sort by member #: currently I had to apply a mod to get the members sorted by their registration dates. But this should be a built in feature in SMF allowing admins to sort member lists by: a) Date registered, b) member#
2. Additional feilds in post profile and in profile: SMF should definately incorporate the option for admins to enable additional feilds in profile and member post profiles (which appear next to each profile avatar etc). Feilds like "biography" "name" etc should have check boxes in the admin panel allowing admins to quickly enable them or disable them. And an additional option to "add a new feild" if necessary.
Apart from the above in my personal opinion the following Additional Changes should be made for better appearance:
1. The 'karma' system should be renamed to something else which is more easily recognizable - reputation is a better description in my opinion.
These are just my personal opinions ofcourse but the reason I believe these options should be incorporated into SMF as defaults and not mods is because nearly everyone 'expects' these to be there. And usually eventually installs the mod anyways.
1> Date registered and member number follow the same pattern. I.e. the first person to register is member 1, the second member number 2. The only reason this wouldn't be the case is if you converted from some other software.
2> Custom profiles are easilly set up through the theme system, an admin area is just going to add additional overhead for something thats changed very infrequently.

2) Have to agree with Ben here. The additional overhead is not really worth it at this point.
Most of these requestet things are intigrated in other forum plattforms by default. So if SMF supports some of these, more people would like to use SMF, cause it is an important argument. ;)
We don't support the
lemming argument.

As far as creating custom profile fields - http://www.unknownbrackets.com/tutorials/custom-profile should be quite useful.
You can already re-name the "applaud" and "smite" features for Karma to whatever you want, and renaming the rest is only a matter of modifying a few language strings.
I would say adding the feature to make certain category's or forums Links to another site or forum would be rather great.
vBulletin has that and in the setup we're using its quite often used.
that's easy to do. it's like one line in boardindex.template.php. just check the id and add the url if it's the right one.
