This is my idea...
I for example have always wanted a forum which can double as my Computer Forum, Gaming Forum and Support Forum. You may say, you can already do that by just making heaps of boards. Well, the boards page gets to long and collapsing is a hastle and i may want a different theme for my second forum. So, you may say, well make a whole new forum. Well, no, becuase i want members to be able to go between with there same logins and stats and i want it all intergrated (like pm's.etc) and i want all the same settings and things, and i don't want to play around the the php and databases to try and share it all only to find thousands of bugs an errors and a totally ruined forum.
If SMF did this, it would revolutionise forums and user/admin usability. It would reduce cluter and alot of other problems, which offering a whole new level to the current style of forums.
I STRONGLY suggest smf to something like this...

How? - please explain? - if it is able to do it, then i still think it needs to be simplified an easier to find and whatnot
Use read-only boards as catagory, so people only see the children board and not other boards. And you can make the parent board use diffferent theme.
I know what your saying, but i mean make it all more functional and easier...
I think you are looking for some sort of "bridge" to connect multiple forums ansd users using the same database information.
I'm not sure if this will work but you might want to try creating multiple forums and use the same database. You then can link the forums together using, well, links...
I hope someone more knowledgable than I will confirm/deny this theory before you try it.
