This has probably been requested before, but it would be handy to be able to "watch" (or unwatch) certain topics or maybe even boards. Then simply go to a "new replies to watched items" link that acts like unreadreplies.
I find myself replying to threads so they'll show up in my unreadreplies sometimes, when really all I want to do is watch them. E-mail subscription is nice, but I prefer the "online" format of the unreadreplies page.
Yes I would like this as well. Unread replies is my most visited page.

Exactly !!
and also, in the other hand, I find myself NOT replying to threads just because I don't want them to "hunt" me forever (very long, 100+ pages, sticky threads...)..
I also think that every time we post reply on a thread, we should have a checkbox on 'Additional Options...' for adding this thread to the 'Watched Topics' list (on by default, I believe).
Isn't there a "Notify" button at the bottom of each thread? If you click that it should subscribe you just the same as if you had replied.
Watching a topic and getting a notify on a topic is totally different, with notify you get an email message each time there is a reply.
With watching its always in a list for you to go and find it whenever you need to.
I think its a great idea, a must for SMF!
You mean you'd like to get email for some topics you're interested in, but have others that were simply flagged up to look at when you next log in?
Notifications are for emails. Watched topics is similar, except you just view a list on the forums and no emails are sent.
Ok I agree this would be a useful feature, but I would like it integrated somehow with topics I have subbed to for other reasons, so I still only get one list of topics I want to know about, otherwise I am bound to forget to check one list or the other.
I think the idea is a consolidated list of all topics you have decided to "watch" for whatever reason. Any new replies show up on the list, so you don't have to hunt down (or camp on) topics you're interested in following but not contributing to.

exactly!
just like "Show new replies to your posts", but "Show new replies on your watched topics".
