But the default theme already is in colors that kinda look like the ones in that theme, or am I missing something?

Love these variations, really! The green one's my favorite, after the blue default one. Mystica, you've done a great job! :D Thanks!

I'll probably snatch the green one as it seems to be pretty close to what I planned to do after I finish my black/noir and red versions! At least it will save me from doing/retouching the gradients and icons myself :D

The other ones look good too, but I prefer the dynamics of the original with a lighter shade titlebg.

I hope you'll have one in the same colors as your loonpeach so I can keep my color scheme, and still offer my members a style choice.

You're quite a talented designer, Mystica. Great sig too!
Thank you for all you do for us.

Excellent work. I would love a gray theme like this one.

Is there a "how to" that explains how/where to change the colors of the default theme on my forum?  I can download them, but am lost after that.   :-[

I have installed new themes, but am thinking this will work a little differently.

Thanks!

I made a decent Grey (or Noir which I like to call it :P) version simply by desaturating the original blue images and the blue background/link/border colours in the CSS file.

Looks good! But I think I'd go for a slightly more chrome look with highlights.
Do you plan to release your color variation theme?

Initially, I thought about a more metallic/glossy look, but with my limited Photoshop experience it takes enough time to desaturate the whole batch of images, so I decided to keep it as simple and basic as possible. I might try to add an adjustment layer and play around with the brightness/contrast settings later though, or just wait and see what you come up with...

I didn't plan to release it, but if there is any interest, I guess I could.

I've also done a red version (original images colorized with Hue = 0 and Saturation = 50) by the way, but personally I think it may have turned out a bit too crimson/pink (turns out that was due to colour rendering on the laptop I used to make it).

How can you edit the look of this theme?  There's a theme_info.xml file that can be edited but where are the various template files that can be edited?
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Mystica on January 06, 2006, 10:29:48 PM
These themes are just color variations. They use the default theme's files. If you want to edit a file, copy it from the default theme into the color variation theme's directory.

I've already made 4 color variations, I'm now going to be working on a peach based version (request from one of my members) save duplicating efforts Mystica.  Once the peach one is finished you can always altar things a bit more until it meets your standards as well, although I will try to get as much right as possible first time with this one  ;) lol

So do I edit the files in the default directory or am I suppose to copy all of those files into the new dark-black directory?  I'm confused as to how this particular theme works, since it's using the default files.

Right now all I want to do is add text links at the very top of the page, and then possibly make my custom logo (that sits on the top left side of the page) linkable.

I'm also having a hell of a time getting the Users Online Today mod working with this.

Suggestions?
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Mystica on January 07, 2006, 12:28:12 PM
Well, this theme simply uses the files in the default directory. If you want to edit a file, it's best to copy it from the default directory and edit it then (files in the default directory itself should always stay like they are). Then upload the edit file to the dark-black directory. You only need to copy the files that you want to edit, all other files will still be used from the default theme.
For the changes that you want to make you'd only need to copy index.template.php and edit it.
Mods should work with these themes just as they work with the default theme. If a mod doesn't work, check if it's meant for the forum version you are using and if there are any images that will have to be copied to the new theme's folder.

Do you happen to know WHERE in the index.template.php file I would have to add text links to work at the top of the page?  I'm looking at the code of it right now, and I can't figure out where it should be.

Thanks a ton!

In boardindex.template.php on line 266, remove the nowrap="nowrap" part.

Depends on where you want to add them. Right at the top above everything else? Then it would be best to put the code right below the <body> tag.

What line are you referring to?  There's a couple <body> tags in the file.  I tried it with the first one on line 168 and it broke my forums.  Thanks!

You can install these themes just like any other theme.

Help, not getting these to install right. I downloaded dl-green.zip... it's got style.css and theme_info.xml and an image folder.

What do I do next?

I also tried to make a copy of the default theme's entire directory, and overwrote the above files with the new ones from dl-green.zip, but it didn't work. I can't get the tabs to show up right. :(

Go to your admin section -> Themes and Layout, at the bottom of the page it says "Install a New theme". Hit the "Browse" button there and select the .zip file on your computer. Then click the "Install!" button and it will install the theme automatically for you.

Hmm that's exactly what I did... it copied image folder, style.css and theme_info.xml into a new directory. Are there supposed to be more files from elsewhere?

I select the theme and it doesn't work right.  What am I missing?

This is on a Joomla-integrated SMF installation (local test server running JSAS 1.03)

It installs ( I see a "Default Green Theme" ) but when I select the theme to use, it just doesn't show up "right".

There are images missing, and some of the fonts are the wrong color...

Actually there is no trace of green anywhere.  ::)

Hmm, just thought of something - maybe I have to *merge* the two CSS files (Joomla and SMF)... maybe I'll give that a go...

The next page did not list any of the variations Themes.

Hi Mystica,

Thanks for the fast reply. ;) The themes are successfully installed and I have set "Allow members to select their own themes." As I'm an Admin, I can change the themes without restriction.

Under my Profile I can see and change among "Forum or Board Default", SMF Default Theme, Classic YaBB SE Theme and Babylon Theme... but it does not show the new Variation themes.

Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support

I had a look Akulian and I had to seriously shrink the window in order to get a scroll bar at the bottom.  I know I use a resolution of 1280x1024 but I seriously reduced the size of the window in order to get a scroll bar at the bottom, and that's with the forum wrapped by MKPortal with both columns open.

My guess though would be that you need to change something in the CSS of the variation as apart from the graphics this is the only thing that is different to the default theme.

Great choices, I have given my forum users several to choose from.
I have had several requests for a tan color. Sort of like the "brown" one you have posted but lighter yet.
Maybe using this color as the darkest color: #D2B48C Tan

I made a Sepia version by colorizing the original blue gradients/images with hue and saturation both set to 30. That's probably a bit darker than what you have in mind though...

Hi Mystica,

Sorry for my poor english.
I've installed your default theme color variations. But after that, I had a little problem with the images of mirror tabs. When you click "members" main tab, there are missing mirror tabs for "view all members" and "search all members."

The missing images are:
mirrortab_active_first.gif
mirrortab_active_last.gif
mirrortab_active_back.gif

And need some modified tags at style.css

Thanks for your default theme color variations, especially for the default green.

You could try changing the titlebg.jpg and change the background color of .titlebg class accordingly.

Tried that

the moment I put a light titlebg.jpg & change the css to correspond I lose the text on the board indexes

Yes but that also changes soem text elsewhere as well for some reason

I'm leaving it for now until I have lots of time to fiddle or you make a new theme colour that suits

Thanks for your consideration & time

go to your admin panel, current theme and scroll down and look for Show buttons as images instead of text if there is a tick in checkbox then check the .zip and your directory to see if the images are in there and if they have uploded, if there isnt a tick in the box, put a tick in the box and click on save.

The tick is already there. The icons show up properly everywhere except in an actual thread. What are the images I should check to see if they are there?

Hi Mystica, thanks for great color variations. I am using dark-black, just slightly changed stylesheet and added two or three my images. You can see it on address http://www.darkrevolution.org (http://www.darkrevolution.org) (it is quite slow sometimes, be patient :)).

I also had problems with some images missing. I solved it by copying all files from default theme's images directory to dark-black images directory (of course, I used "skipall" option to avoid overwriting your images).
After that, I have noticed that there is no entry in <based-on> section of theme_info.xml file. Maybe adding "default" to that section will solve the problem with missing images?
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support

Which images were missing? The based-on option won't help here, then it would use the default images.

I'll be updating the color variation themes in the next couple days, there are a couple other things that need to be fixed. Thanks for letting me know.

edit: should all be fixed now.

Mystica,

I downloaded the updated "Green" (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=64128.msg443180#msg443180) variation that fixes the Active Tabs, which is great.

However I noticed that the BBCODE buttons in the editor (the ones above the smileys while typing posts) are a bit weird.

Couple problems:

1) button graphics are wrong, for example "underline" and "insert hyperlink" buttons interchanged;
"font-face" and "insert email" buttons interchanged.

2) where the | is, there is now instead "#" - it seems that "#" has become divider.gif ???

I'm not sure if it's just me or something in my setup, but I simply uploaded the zip file and overwrote the entire "green" directory.

Hey Mystica,

Question:
Our club installed the SMF1.1 RC2 software.
We have the 3 Themes but the're all in blue.
The colors of our club are Red and white.

That's why I want somthing with Red in the Theme
I've seen a very piece of work from you. Namely the Red theme.
The languages we use on the Forum are English, French and Dutch(Forumstandard)
Is it possible to install the red Theme?
And will it work with the different languages?

Thanks already

you could create a new theme folder in the Themes directory for example

Themes/Default Red

and upload the files of the red one into there.

or the long way would be to copy the default directory and name it Default Red (or similar) and upload the red files into there.

Two questions

1. All dark themes are showing a white background, how can I fix this please?

2. Which file do I need to change to stretch the forum to 100% screen width and height please?

Thanks
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Deaks on March 12, 2006, 12:48:48 PM
1. this can be done in the style.css look for body and change the background colour. Someof the dark themes also have a dark version are you sure your downloading the correct one.

2 width etc is done in index.template.php

I would advise keeping an unmodified copy incase your make a mistake.
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Gobo on March 13, 2006, 02:47:49 AM
Thanks

I got problem 2 fixed, it was actually located in the .css file of each theme where the main body properties are defined

As for problem 1 I think the issue is caused because my SMF is bridged with mkportal

So it might be that the css file for mkportal is interfering with the forum...I will try and seperate smf from mkp and see what happens

Thanks anyways

Great themes

Also, it would be annoying to replace each image file by file, if not the whole folder.

Not sure if this has ben brought up before (I couldn't find it).

I am about to create a duplicate of my current default theme and apply the dark blue css and pics.

I have noticed that other sites which have done the same have this problem: (also related to other themes also)

If you look at the help file some of the writing does not show up as it is the same as the background. This is really bad if you look at the posting section, you cant see any text until you highlight it.

Is there a reliable fix for this?

many thanks.

Mystica,

Are your Color Variation themes for 1.1RC2  compatible with 1.1RC3?

kai920:   yeah I read that, so does that mean the classic theme variations are compatible? or do I have to edit theme_info.xml?     because I'm confused on all this

from what I see so far, the additions seem to already be there (shrugs) so I'm confused because it looks to me like the variations have already been made..

Just open the .css file and at the end add these lines:

/* The AJAX notifier */
#ajax_in_progress
{
   background: #32CD32;
   color: white;
   text-align: center;
   font-weight: bold;
   font-size: 18pt;
   padding: 3px;
   width: 100%;
   position: fixed;
   top: 0;
   left: 0;
}

All the other changes described here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=104247.0;all
are already done.

Is it possible for a compilation of all default theme variations and make it as defaultMC (multicolor).

Many Thanks... :)
Sorry to say that quite a number of those theme's' css file has NOT been updated for 1.1RC3.
I knew because i am working on a multicolor default theme (by compiling all the themes listed there) with the color change option (thanks to HarzeM, i use the Dilber MC (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=91902.0)'s code) on the main page.

So far the color changing works and no errors at all, but i have make it so that guests would not have that option. I can't imaging the guests keep changing and testing over 20 colours on my forum....

I try to keep the things easy and not to mess around with the template files since i'm not a coder, so with the compilation, i need to use images in color that suits most of the color themes. I think the themes need to be separated in a Light Theme MultiColour and Dark Theme MultiColour but i haven't do that.

I'm testing it for the first time and it's not working. I'm using 1.1 and there just isn't a style, it seems - I get white page background, unadjusted font size, basically just the browser defaults for all settings concerning colors and fonts. :(

It's for 1.1RC3, not for 1.1 Final. I haven't tested it with 1.1 final yet.

Just uploaded new files for version SMF 1.1 Final at Theme Site (http://themes.simplemachines.org/index.php?lemma=158).

Please take note that you need to go to Admin-->Current Theme-->Theme Options and Preferences making necessary changes for the color change selection box appear on the homepage for the logged in member.

Something that goes off those colors, but isn't too dark and dreary looking. If that's possible, lol.

I noticed that the Default MC failed CSS validation.
QuoteFile not foundhttp://www.theopenrange.net/forum/Themes/DefaultMC_fin11/style.css?fin11: Not Found
Is the error.
Looking at index.template, I found this comment:
The ?fin11 part of this link is just here to make sure browsers don't cache it wrongly.

It this something that can be fixed?
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: bebe on January 16, 2007, 11:49:09 PM
Oh, there is no style.css at all in the DefaultMC Theme, i think you can delete away the line 113 at index.template.php .
Please feed back if that works.
Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Simplemachines Cowboy on January 17, 2007, 12:41:26 AM
I commented out this line in index.template:
// <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="', $settings['theme_url'], '/style.css?fin11" />

And it now validates.

Thanks Bebe!

Hi! I love this theme (the default multi-color). I just have one question: is it possible to set my log-image with a transparency and if so, where do i do that at? Also, is there anyway to use a different logo on different colors or to sometimes have ot as the text of the site name and sometimes a color?

I am running into the problem where our log looks very bad with some of the colors - and I want users to be able to selct their own color.

Thats a permission error that you'll need to have your host take care of.  You don't need to do the update on the default theme, the color variations are complete separate themes from the default. Install them separately.

you should ask in the theme thread or in Help Wanted (Not Support) (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=50.0)

but if you wanna try urself colors are located in the style.css in the theme directory and images in the image folder in the theme directory

Have a link to your site? Did you check to see if the theme installed properly? Look in the theme folder in your FTP and see if the files are all there.

The path should look something like this:

Themes/theme_name/index.template.php

All other files and folders should be in this directory.

Sounds like you are trying to install it via the package manager? Make sure you go to Admin > Themes and Layout > Manage and Install <---- from here upload and install the theme. If you are using this method to install, make sure you are selecting the zip to upload and not any other files. SMF will automatically install the theme for you from the zip file after you upload.

ekfaysal,
Most folks who tinker with the default do it for two reasons:
Make minor changes to color and layout to be different, and that is all they need.
Or use the knowledge to then go on and make their own custom theme to match their site or whatever.

So you won't see much in the way of major changes to the default theme published as such.

Yes funfan, you can choose (in the admin panel) weather or not the users can change the theme.

Oh this thread (and the thread with the downloads) is a life saver, new to this only just started as a friend recommended SMF (and tiny Portal) as a good platform for a new site for a project I'm involved in. However some members are attached to a certain shade of yellow (#FFDD00) for their websites (the original website with the TV show that spawned us featured it heavily) and I've been looking for a way to change my site from blue to Yellow (and white text to black so it's readable).

Any chance someone can either PM me some fairly thorough guidelines to making my own variation (which I'll share obviously once I've got it working) or possibly if it isn't too much trouble see me good.

Bad guidelines would be acceptable as well I'm sure I'd figure it out eventually just I'm wanting to launch the site to the public soonish.

I'm having trouble downloading the theme.  I've tried a few different times, using different browsers and different computers, but still no luck.  Anyone else having this problem?

I'm really jonesing for that black default theme. :D

Does the style.css for any of these variations contain the following area definitions that seem to be missing from the v1.1.4. default style.css?

#upshrinkHeader
#upshrinkHeader2
#bodyarea
#footerarea

And does anyone know why they're missing from the v1.1.4. default style.css?

I don't know if I'm just not able to search for the right words, but does there exist a manual or guide how to convert those old 1.1.x themes into the new 2.0 Beta 3?

In case those are the old default themes I thought it might be easier to convert them instead of other themes.

I'm looking forward for getting some help with this.

Thx a lot

There is no guide because the 2.0 template files are not complete as its beta. There will likely be many changes.

So does that mean the default color variations are no longer being worked?  Is someone else going to take this over?  I would really like a dark yellow - gold default them color.  There used to be one long ago!!!

Thanks!

I think I've ported all Themes from  the Default Themes Colour Variations Thread (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=64128.0) to Smf 2.0 Beta 3 with the permission of Mystica. Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

Thank you, it's very useful!

UPD
There is a little problem with changing colors. I've made color changes in style.css, and in 'preview mode' it looks OK, but when I'm loading forum, the main colors (except background and fonts) have not been changed :(
Can anyone help me with that?

And I will be very happy to see a manual about style.css, because now I have to guess what is what in 'preview mode'.

Though currently I remember seeing someone make some Beta 4 variations. Though I dunno where they went...

Hello,

Would someone be kind enough to explain how these colour variations work ? Do they become your new default ? and will any packages/mods work without manual installation ?

Title: Re: Default Theme Color Variations Support
Post by: Deaks on January 18, 2009, 09:40:04 AM
you simply have to download and install as any other theme, neither package contains any template files so you do not need to do any edits to them, to set as default , you simple do this in the same manner as any other theme.

Post by: glennk on January 18, 2009, 10:29:47 AM
Do they become the "Default Theme Core" ??

Just to give a bit more information on my concerns. I have made the YABB theme the default for my site readers. But when I add packages like the ad-managment mod and topic tagging mod they do not work on the YABB Classic. They only work on the Default Theme Core.

Sorry if im confusing you, Im confused myself.

No they do not. They independent from it in terms of where the images are stored, but the template files (the .template.php) files remain the defaults.

in 1.1.x line mods only install on default core theme unless the author has set it otherwise, you would need to use the  tutorial on how to do it on other thejmes (the tutorial is linked in the stick in the Graphics and Templates Board)

Thanks Guys,

Thats what I was getting at. Its a bit of a pain having to manually install mods and I thought this might be an answer to get a slightly different core default that would allow packages to be installed through package mananger.

I think If I am going to need to do manual installs I will look at a completely different theme.

Thanks very much for your help. Much appreciated

if the theme has installed but not installed the style.css just unzip the download package on your computer and FTP the style.css from it to your server to the theme folder

mod: I think I'm getting it all sorted now =]

mod2: nope what I tried didnt work....
Basically my problem is quite clear: www.bellydancedreams.co.uk/forums
so I have the most of the Peach theme installed yet some bits of blue are showing where it shouldn't!  I have uploaded the CSS file, and have added the image files that are unique to the peach theme.  The reason I haven't uploaded them all is I have to upload manually one by one! I knew which where unique because I downloaded the Mods package and I just reloaded the whole folder with my theme name =]

Use your forum for a while, and try to recreate some errors. After you get some new errors,

1/ 2.0 is not Final yet anyway.

2/ This was never going to be installed by default. It was always planned to have the ability to support multi themes (which we already have), but not to actually have one as part of the 2.0 installation package.

Would be cool to have the default Curve theme with a few color variations,
so that the enduser can himself choose inside the forum,  what
his favourite colors are...
Could be stored in his control panel...

I thought this would be in the final SMF 2.0 version integrated ?

I think Joomla also has such a feature and a few other CMS systems..

Why not SMF ?
