Title: MediaWiki integration
Post by: SilverSide on January 06, 2006, 11:11:55 PM
What I want:
MediaWiki database integration with SMF - would be awesome!  Open ID, wikis, open source software, this is the *FUTURE* of the computer world.  I say SMF should move with it and stay where it is - the very best!

Also, perhaps some kind of integrated support for [Wikilinks] that could be activated and link to the appropriate wiki page?

Also see my OpenID topic - if SMF could support OpenID, then this would be unneeded, as there exists modifications to support OpenID for MediaWiki also.

somewhere in this forum i read how to do it, how to integrate SMF with Mediawiki, but i can't find it anymore.

can some of the developers maybe elaborate on how one could use SMF's user db and login stuff for MediaWiki, I just want my SMF users to be able to use the wiki, and the wiki itself should not accept new registrations

This is good, I am actually thinking about this as well.  But one note, I don't like all SMF members to be suddenly copied over to MediaWiki's member table.

What is better is to let the SMF member decide if s/he wants an account under the mediawiki section.  That way, the members table of different applications dont go bloated suddenly because of a sudden copy-over from SMF to another app.

I think the best live example will be the integration of SMF1.1 and Menalto's Gallery 2.

http://gallery.menalto.com/SMF_G2

* My only comment with the example given, don't give an option for the users to create a new account under mediawiki :p  coz in the SMF1.1+G2 integration, they have the option to create a new account just for gallery2.

Check out the SMF1.1 and Gallery 2 integration here and maybe you can pick up the best options from there.

My main reason for not copying over each member "automatically" and "magically" (db to db,  or if the member visited the mediawiki site while logged-in to SMF) is because, not every SMF member will bother with the mediawiki site.

Example, in one of the forums I recently converted to SMF, we have 3,000 members already.  And, a good estimate of 100 members only (and less) will even bother about our wiki site.  The rest of the 2,900 members will either ignore it or just visit it.  And we all know that we don't need to be logged-in just to read a wiki site ;)

That way, the members table and the db as a whole do not get bloated of "copied-over" members.

So again, the best example here is:

SMF1.1+Gallery2 integration.

Hope there'll be SMF1.1 + MediaWiki integration!!
