I'm working (playing) on migrating a large phpBB forum over to SMF. Thus far I really like the features of SMF compared to phpBB, so I'm fairly excited.
Now that I've dug into the code though...hmm...
What is the purpose of echoing all the html? This seriously reduces the capabilities of certain tools like Dreamweaver.
I was kind of looking forward to moving away from a template engine like that used by phpBB because I've always felt they were pretty redundant if you manage your code well enough to begin with. But not being able to play around with layouts in Dreamweaver is a drag :( Yeah yeah, I know, "Bah, I do all my work in notepad!"
So, any WYSIWYG editor or plugin recommendations?
It uses echo because it is simple far more efficient than any other system. SMF has been designed to use a little resources as possible. But echoing is hardly complex..
I've heard that before. I wonder if that holds when you're using a script cache?
SMF does cache in 1.1 :)
I don't know if eldacar means SMF is more efficient than any other system or echoing is, but id just take that as an opinion not fact if it bothers you :)
I've been running Turck MMCache for a long time and like it very much. It seems to me that with cache/optimization engines being pretty common on most web servers offering php, the benefits of echo'ing everything would be nullified.
Embedding php into html is in my opinion the way to go, because then you can still use a WYSIWYG editor to speed up basic formatting tasks, and you don't have to worry about escaping apostrophes.
Anyhow, I don't mean to complain too much, I was just a little suprised. It's only going to be a problem for me as I create my template for SMF. Integrating SMF with the rest of my site should be easy with SSI - GREAT FEATURE!
