Alright, first this is going on the folder.... sorry.
Second, it will go on top of the following images:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/default/images/thread/hotthread.gif
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/default/images/thread/veryhotthread.gif
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/default/images/thread/thread.gif
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/Themes/default/images/thread/poll.gif
So - I have two requests.
1. I am not a graphic artist, so I need help designing the icon.
2. For the same reason, I cannot think of a good icon. Some I've thught of/seen are:
- sound lines.
- glowing folder.
- bullhorn.
- + sign..
- different colored folder.
- folder with a paper in it.
- slightly tilted folder.
Have any suggestions? Want to help?
If you're willing to do the graphics, please pm me.
If you have an idea for an icon, or like one of them better... please reply here.

I think it would be interesting to see the glowing folders.
a little red flag.

a little red flag.
hmmm.. interesting... I'd like to see that as well.
I can see a problem with a little red flag... unless its in a column of its own.. the problem is there's so much stuff on these folder icons already.. a little red flag will just confuse the whole icon.
That's actually why I didn't mention the possibility, even though I thought of it, of a red flag.

Then how about following your different colour folder thing and just making the folders of read topic completely greyscale and/or more transparent?
is the old_sticky image still in use?

LOL I'd forgotten about that!
Dumb question: what means "thread participation". What exactly is the icon for?

It's something we want to add to the icon to tell a user whether or not they have personally participated in a topic.

Aha, thanks.
hmm.. i was still posting about this subject in the original thread in "Feature Requests"... so this is actually a double post ;D
but i've made some icons, just let me know what you think..
@Seph|roth
They are looking very good !!
very nice indeed :) the icons are very clear! 8)
maybe an eye or a pen icon could be used for participation...
I was very impressed by those, Seph|roth, but... they don't exactly *fit* this theme... somehow... :P. They do look good though.
Well... a red flag *can* be used... or even the stupid (dumb imho) dot from vBulletin... I couldn't really care much less, I just need to get the icon ready.
-[Unknown]
well, tell me what you'd like to see [Unknown], and i'll try to make something...
btw, note the size of my icons, they're 22x22... if I make them any smaller they would get too messy, so I hope that's not a prob...
For now lets stick with something on the current folders. This doesn't mean a different theme won't have a different look.
OK, something like this maybe?

I know the purple folders are a bit blurry, but I had to enlarge them from the original gif...
EDIT: hmm.. I just noticed an error on some icons on the bottom row.. i guess Fireworks made some pixels transparent, I'll fix it tomorrow evening.
EDIT2: On second thought, it doesn't look like something's wrong after all ;D Just my imagination I guess...
why not use an open and closed envelope?
open if you've participated, closed if you didn't?
Everyone uses folders...

Hey - I REALLY like that open folder and closed folder....very apt!
Those look very nice! I think they would be very good.
good idea open closed folders :)
it was used for a short while.

will it ever be used again?? :D
@Seph|roth
nice button set! make it a button packet for download :)
@ the open enveloppe... would be also a good idea to use that
btw, since they're part of this theme and we know what the background colour will be - there's nothing preventing us from using anti-aliased images.
Just a note.

Question: where should the participation be added? to all the icons?
I am asking this question becaus hottreads are not include in to each icon.

The htaccess disalowed direct requests (entering the url to an image in your browser)
Now you should be able to see the pics? (Iv allowed direct requests)
now I can see .. thanks and they are really nice :)
Well... I'm really a fan of the small (16x16) icons... but that may just be me... (and really, I'm not the guy it's important to please here, but... whatever.)
I don't like the thinner looking folders... personally... and, although nice and original, the ones Aliencowfarm posted will never fit this theme...
As to the second set of purple ones from A.M.A, I don't want to get sued by M$ for the first ones, but the second ones look pretty nice - although skinny again.
I tried to take a shot at it...
Doesn't look that good, but they do look open, I think... except the poll one, which is why I made the second one..

And... this is the old blue set, but I think they can easily be "puplified" so to speak.. that is, if someone who actually was decent with graphics could mess with them... I do think open might be enough to signify that you posted in it... not sure, but I think so..
I know they need a bit of work... but, does anyone think they are in the right direction? Do they look like "participation" to you?
-[Unknown]
to be honest - I think the open and closed when it's that small is too subtle. If it's that small I think we'd need a colour variation.
Fari 'nough... that was exactly what I was asking.
Should they open and turn red? Or is red to strong... should it be yellow? A darker purple?
I don't joke when I say I know little to none about graphics. I don't even dress well...
I know there are certain colors that go together... red/green, blue/orange, purple/yellow? Should they turn yellow, then?
-[Unknown]
well I thought I could open a new post and make them :D :D
I think gray is a good contrasting color with purple... and just about any color :-\
I'll make some gray and yellow ones real quick...
Cool! I can't believe I actually helped!
So... is everyone cool with this? Which looks better?
-[Unknown]
I like the colored version. For me its sufficient when the participated color is slightly different.
I like all of the colors ;)
I like the idea but they look to rough.

the new icons looks good. I also like the folder idea. But I think the shades could be better like on this image. Maybe increase the colour depth of the icons?

I don't like the gradient effects. If you don't give it texture it looks ugly. Doesn't fit with this forum...

Thank you!
I'll do some optimisation tomorrow (adjust the colors, ect. to make them look better in this theme) and make some of the other variations as well

I really like your Idea of placing the icons in front of the subject .. makes sense, less work (you need only one icon).

Well, this wasn't quite my idea, AMA. Believe it was
's idea...

Ah, now i understand. In your post, you said "I really like your Idea of placing the icons in front of the subject .. makes sense, less work (you need only one icon). " I didn't read it correctly, and thought you were talking about the thread icon. So no need to be sorry, my mistake ;)
But that idea has already been rejected, although it was my personal favorite too.
Looking at the current participation icons I always thought that the shades are wrong in the yellow icons. Then I realized the yellow icons are open folders, the purple icons closed ones. I think its to much to have an opened folder and a different colour as well. It would be enough to have either an opened folder or alternatively the different color.
See attached image below.
you're absolutely right... but hey, we can all change it ourselves when SMF comes out :P My hands are already itching to fire up Photoshop ;D

My cent or two: making it yellow stands out, but isn't intuitive enough. Making it open doesn't stand out, but is intuitive. Making it do both is the best of the two worlds - intuitive AND it stands out.

FYI guys: yesterday I started to translate the buttons. The german gifs were posted to [Unknown] some minutes ago. If that translation is feedbacked fine I will continue with more languages.
I'm horrible with graphics programs... but another idea could be a notepad and a notepad with a pencil.
I don't know if they are going to be changed as well but I made the Exclamation point and Question Mark to look like the folders!
These new ones are loads better than the old ones. Maybe another improvement would be to replace the outlined font type by normal bold type (such as in the huh smiley).
blinking would be funny :)
example:
Looks great Alien :D
thats pritty neat!
it the background fading to??
I like the questionmark icon, too ;)
both (Aquilo and ACF) look good.
@acf is that a drop shadow!
yep it is why?? (my question mark does look ugly! it is not made to be used just trown together in hurry as an example)
