Title: Modifying a template to fit site layout
Post by: Kaiser on March 14, 2004, 04:35:43 AM
Alright, I just upgraded my forum from YABB to the SMF beta and I'm having trouble figuring out what to exactly edit to get the forum to fit into the rest of my site. The site is http://www.gameradio.tv and the forum URL itself it http://forum.gameradio.tv

I had a devil of a time getting the template to work with YABB and I'm just confused on what I could do to get it to work here. I know my HTML, but I don't know the PHP coding and that's where I'm falling on my face.

Also, I'm using FrontPage 2003 with the dynamic web templates as the border links change weekly. After a lot of playing around with YABB, I got it to work and it should work here. I just tell it what file to integrate into the template and presto, but since I'm lost on what file to work on...

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

The converted template seems to be working... except it has one little error.  If you could either post it or email it I can take a look.

Well, I'm actually trying to get the site to work with the new default template for SMF. I like that a lot better.

With the old template.php file, if I renamed it to .html in FrontPage, it would display and I could apply the dynamic web template to it. For some reason, which how it's programmed now, it comes up blank in FrontPage.

What is it that you would like me to post? The code? Let me know. Thanks for the help.

Oh, I see... well, this is what is planned for later.  A template.php will be included that is *roughly* the same as the new theme (minus some things of course...) which you can easily edit in Frontpage, etc.

ooooooh....... that explains a lot.  ;D

How long a wait until this is implemented, by the way? I'll go ahead and e-mail you the file with the error so I can get that squared away while waiting for the template.php feature to be implemented. Thanks again!

Guess that's what I get for downloading a beta and expecting everything to work perfectly...  ;D  I really do love the beta, though. I may set that as the template, even without the ability to use the sidebar right now. Depends on how long until I can get an editable template.php file.

Well, if you're willing to dabble in a little html and php you might be able to do it without FrontPage's help anyway.  (not my favorite program anyhow :P.)

I know a lot about HTML, but I finally settled down on this because it was something quick and easy to use when I just need to edit text and info. Plus, I upgraded to 2003 because of the dynamic web templates. I just edit the link on the template and it copies and saves it to all of the pages in my website.

Now, are you saying that I could write my own template.php file, or that I would figure out how to edit the index.template.php file?

By the way, you should have the e-mail with the file giving the error on my site by now. Thanks!

I've replied.  You might try looking at the index.template.php file to see if you can make sense of it offhand.

lol...... already tried that. The thing is, I need FrontPage to be able to automatically update the info every week.

Kaiser buddy...
To get a html template for ur site... try out the File > Save As function in IE....
Then just have a bit of a look through your index.template.php in your themes dir to see what functions you can implement...
And also read the newsPHPReadme.txt in your forums root directory.... nice bit of info there to help you integrate further... =)

Cheers.
