is there a way to change the .gif buttons of the default theme with .swf buttons?

ya u can manually change each file extension from FTP :P
but y u wanna do tht?
secondly the forum then wont work
ull have to change all paths manually

lol , i thought it was possible by changing the extensions in the stylesheet file...nvm
To change the buttons you will need to edit the {preffix}.template.php files and replace the .gif/.jpg images there. It will take some time but it can be done. If you just want to change the images on the menu just edit index.template.php. For the On/Off images edit BoardIndex.template.php.
