Howdy Folks!
As part of my GoDaddy hosting deal, I purchased the right to use SMF for my community. I have several questions.
First, to create a link to the forum, what pathname/filename do I use in the href declaration? I installed the SMF using the GoDaddy wizard not creating any special folders.
Second, the default colors for the panels and buttons are inconsistent with the color theme of my site. Can I modify these style characteristics? If so, where do I go to learn how?
Third, as the moderator, I'd like to create some specific categories of threads. For example, my site is a high school senior class page and reunions are a constant topic. Can I create a category called "Reunion Planning"? If so, where do I go to learn how?
Finally, the SMF forum function will be a very useful part of my site, but I don't intend to become a forum guru. Do I need to have the charter membership? If so, what added value will I derive that I can't get from this and other discussion communities?
FWIW, I'm on old IT puke who cut his teeth on COBOL and BAL on mainframes back in the '60's, but I'm a noob with HTML/CSS/PHP et al on this platform -- but learning loads every day!
TIA
What is the forum url?
Hello Erik!
Thank for replying to my post. My website is www.broughton1960.com.
I looked in the various directories using my FTP client, but I don't know which file is the executable for the forum, or the script name or whatever it is that must be loaded for the forum to come up. I want to put a link in my navigation panel that will invoke the forum. For other pages I usee the HTML HREF declaration with the name of the HTML file that must be loaded to invoke those pages, but I don't know how to invoke the forum script.
TIA
I cant get into the forum, it only says:
Please let me know when you see this page.
Specifically, I need to know what link you clicked
that caused you to get here AND what page you
were on when you clicked it.
Send e-mail to:
[email protected].
(he gives me a 404-message..)
Howdy Erik.
Thank you, one MORE time!
What you got is my customized 404 message. You must have clicked on 'forum' in the navigation panel. The ONLY active pages are the opening page that announces that the page is under construction and the 404 (file not found) page. I have not hosted any files that I created, yet; however, I DID install SMF and it IS uploaded on my host. (Tried to post a screenshot from Filezilla to show what is uploaded, but don't know how to post one here.) The root directory has a folder named "SMF" and there are 6 folders (attachments, avatars, Packages, Smilies, Sources, Themes) and a bunch of php, html, etc files in the SMF folder.
I've looked around in FAQ on this forum but didn't find a page that tells users WHAT to upload to their hosting site, and HOW to invoke it. Did I miss something?
I believe SMF is hosted properly, I just don't know how to invoke it from my HTML. I can open the SMF forum ONLY by going through GoDaddy's site and navigating to it from there. I've tried to figure out how they invoke it by viewing their source, but haven't found it yet. When I start the forum from GoDaddy's navigation, I don't see any tools for setting up moderator options, etc., either; so perhaps SMF didn't install properly from the GoDaddy site.
I wanted to make the forum the first active page but don't know how to write the HTML statement that will invoke the forum. For example, I would write something like:
<a href="forumscript.html">Forum</a>
if there were an HMTL file that invokes the forum. What I need to know is what to put in the statement in order to make the link work, if it can be done with HTML. If I don't make the link work with an HTML statement like the one above, what kind of statement do I need?
Thank you again for the help.
I entered this code : <a href="http://www.broughton1960.com/smf">Forum</a>
Now the link works! Yeah!!!!!!
I found the url in the "settings.php" file.
