SMF Translation FAQIf you have questions, please send a message to
[email protected].
In which language can I translate SMF?
You can translate SMF in every language you want, except the ones who are already done (visit the language page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages) for more info). Please remember that you have to speak the language very well to provide the users a complete and good translation. If you're not sure whether the language is already started, take a look at the language boards (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=12.0) and ask there.
What do I need to translate SMF?
You need the actual english language files (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?languages;lang=english) and a text editor with UTF-8 support - for example:
- Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net)
- PSPad (http://www.pspad.com)
- EditPad (http://www.editpadpro.com/)
A button set generator, for instance, Marco van Veelen's Button Generator (http://www.marcovanveelen.nl/buttongenerator/).
How do I start?
After downloading on of the english language files, uncompress them in a folder on your PC. It'll look like this:
smf_1-1_english (or smf_1-1_english-utf8) |- Themes |- babylon | |- images | | |- english | |- languages |- classic | |- images | | |- english | |- languages |- default |- images | |- english |- languages
|
--> Babylon buttons --> Babylon language files
--> Classic buttons --> Classic language files
--> Default buttons --> Default language files
|
- Open the .php files with the text editor and translate the text between the single quotes after the equivalence sign:
$txt['mboards_new_cat'] = 'Create new category';
$txt['mboards_new_board'] = 'Add Board';
Remove the comments "// Untranslated!" if you translated the string!
- If you have to use single quotes in the strings, please use a backslash before it. Otherwise, the language file will be useless.
$txt['smf285b'] = 'It wasn\'t necessary to optimize any tables.';
- Please use numeric HTML Entities (look here (http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_entitiesref.asp)) instead of any special character in the language strings. You don't have to use HTML Entities if you create an UTF-8 package.
$txt['sendtopic_comment'] = 'Kommentar hinzufügen';
- You can add credits into the admin area by editing "Admin.xxx.php" -> line 52 -> $txt[644]. Add "<br />" and your text after the word "functions.".
- Don't do the following things with the language package:
- add language strings from mods
- add additional pictures
- add credits other than the above mentioned
- add text that does not one-on-one translate to the english text
- translate comments
What files do I have to translate?
- You've to translate all the language files and the buttons of the babylon and classic theme.
- If you want to translate 1.0.x packages, you can also translate the .xml files located in the 'help' folder.
Please translate only the '.xml' files!
I finished the translation, what's next?
Make sure that you've at least one package: An ANSI encoded or an UTF-8 encoded package. Compress the files including folders with Winzip (http://www.winzip.com), WinRAR (http://www.rarlabs.com) or any other archiving program using the
.zip format, normal compressing ratio and send the files to my email address (
[email protected]).
How about that Translation team what Devs talked about? I asked that from Jeff, but he didnt answer. I think idea is good, we should have own hidden board where to talk about translation issues, guidelines etc. :) And mr B in charge of cource :P :D
Although I think a translation team would be too huge to handle, it does seem a good idea. I do sort of need to post the guildlines.

Hankstay, Ostaspbay!
Though I think an extra board or extra rights on a special download page where you can find newer files to download is recommendable.
That way you can translate all files in the offered langueages before the next release.

So when you've done that you'll be able to start on the (radically) revised help files I'm working on now! ;)
So you mean that the current help file is going to be replaced? If so, should I translate this one or wait for the new one?
I'm supposed to be on that list, I have been on a translation list since September 2002 for Norwegian translation. ETA for the Norwegian translation is March 23rd.

We're hoping to have a French language pack for the public beta out in a few days :)
Finnish is done http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7193.0 You can put that in download area. Part of help file isnt translated, but i wont translate it because its currently under rewrite :)
Quote from: ivogomes on March 20, 2004, 09:41:51 AM
So you mean that the current help file is going to be replaced?
I'm not touching the contextual help ATM, but I'm completely rewriting the stuff that's associated with the help button, which basically means everything that looks like this:
/* For the help sections, translate like so...
$txt['help_section_blah'] = array(
array( <-- this is a new section!
'name' => TRANSLATE THIS PART (if it is there.),
'anchor' => TRANSLATE THIS TOO (if it is there...),
'text' => TRANSLATE ALL OF THIS!
),
so on.
); */
Quote
If so, should I translate this one or wait for the new one?
Not easy to give a straight answer because, while I'd like to see the new user help out ASAP, it's not likely to be finished for a week or two yet because:
1. There's a lot more of it!
2. So we're looking at separating it from the contextual help altogether...
3. So I'm also working on a new format for the files that you'll be given for this particular section.
I've told the folks doing the French translation not to translate the Help yet, since you're re-writing it, and SMF is still in beta :)
French has been completed: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7863.0 :D

I'd like to be able to put them on the download page as soon as I've checked them through too.
Spanish almost finished :)
Quote from: Peter Duggan on March 20, 2004, 10:41:07 AM
So I'm also working on a new format for the files that you'll be given for this particular section.
Thought I might post a few snippets of the new stuff for you all to see.
What we're planning to do is to give you XML files to translate for the user help, then transforming these through XSLT to generate straight XHTML for the distributions.
So hopefully this comment should be self-explanatory:
<!-- Don't translate tags or attributes -->
When applied to stuff like this:
Code removed by Peter Duggan 2004-03-31 because that bit's now being done in a far more elegant manner!
But some further instructions have been included as attributes where they help to clarify things:
<bbc-help>

<bbc-button translate="no">bold</bbc-button>
<bbc-code>[b]bold[/b]</bbc-code>

<html-close translate="no"><![CDATA[</i>]]></html-close>

And the only other thing I'd like to add just now is that a text editor with appropriate syntax highlighting should make the job really quite straightforward if you've got one!
Does coding knowlege required to do translation? i know a little bit of coding, but not much, but i'd still like to help. I can do Traditional Chinese. thanks
While translation doesn't involve any coding as such, it does require enough knowledge to know what to translate and what to leave...
So it doesn't really matter whether you're translating this:
array(
'name' => 'BBC',
'anchor' => 'code',
'text' => '
For obvious reasons standard HTML code cannot be used in posts. Instead SMF allows the use of SMF Bulletin Board Code (BBC) in posts. BBC is similar to HTML, but safe and standardized for bulletin board use.<br />

<td> </td>
<td><hr width="40%" size="1" /></td>
</tr>
Or this:

Ok, i read that then. Thanks!
I've read the changelog but that didn't tell me which strings were added and which were modified.
Example of changelog.txt:
Quote
& Language files changed to reflect this new functionality.
...
& Added the necessary language strings to make this possible.
Where can I see wich strings were added to the text files??
I got a big tricky question for you tranlators,
when i write the language files in hebrew and load them to my forum the print comes out backwards (eg, "1-2-3" is a 3 letter hebrew word spelled right, it will come out "3-2-1-" on the forum..... but the posts come out right all the time...
and i dont know what to do.....
index.hebrew.php > $txt['lang_rtl'] = false; change to > $txt['lang_rtl'] = true;

I ask same quoestion. This is very hard to translate when you have to go trough every line after upgrade. Im sure devs know what are changed, so why not info us translators about those strings. :) Spanish, Dutc and German know these advance.
Now every finnish user have to wait my translation before they can upgrade to 4.1.
I found these:
admin.english.php
$txt['theme_current_settings'] = 'Current Theme\'s Settings';
profile.english.php
$txt['moderator_why_missing'] = 'why isn\'t moderator here?';
$txt['showPermissions'] = 'Show Permissions';
$txt['showPermissions_given'] = 'Given by';
$txt['showPermissions_permission'] = 'Permission (denied permissions are <del>struck out</del>)';
$txt['showPermissions_none'] = 'This member has no permissions.';
$txt['showPermissions_all'] = 'As an administrator, this member has all possible permissions.';
$txt['local_time'] = 'Local Time';
who.english.php
$txt['who_hidden'] = '<em>Nothing, or nothing you can see...</em>';
Is there more?
In all german files changes are marked with //Untranslated!!. Pretty easy.
Yeah. its one of 4 default languages... That lang team should be started and let them know before releases about these changes. That way we have them ready when release comes out.
Just do a file compare between the last release's english and the current release's english...

index.hebrew.php > $txt['lang_rtl'] = false; change to > $txt['lang_rtl'] = true;
Nope, if I do that, everything will be backwards, yes the words will work but for example my username will be read "repmaL" instead of "Lamper".
Try changing your charset (lang files and browser)? Surely if you change lang_rtl to true it changes the direction on your themes, or have you messed around with the like that reads:
<html', $context['right_to_left'] ? ' dir="rtl"' : '', '><head>
in index.template.php?

But, as I have already told bostasp in a PM, I am a bit confused with those language files that are changing. I started translating one language file before the beta release and now I see that there are 20 different files. I have to recheck everything.
Also, should I translate the help file now? People here said that it's going to change.
Don't do the Help file.
See above for links to file compare programs, or ask someone to give you an outline - perhaps even Bostasp could be so kind.
-[Unknown]
ConTEXT is very good to compare 2 different versions of the same file. And it's free!!
Does it matter the order of the lng lines
(eg does it matter if its:
txt[115]=blah
txt[116]=blah
or
txt[116]=blah
txt[115]=blah)
I think it doesn't matter, but I advise you not to chage the order of the strings because when the files get updated, the line numbers are very usefull to know what has changed in the updated versions.
It doesn't really matter, but as ivogomes said, it's probably best to leave them as they are, for updating purposes :)
Why would you want to change them anyway? ???

Lamper indeed I did recieve your file. After you changed all texts the 4th time of course I will do the buttons the 4th time for you... Hopefully this time you translated everything the right way. ;)
FYI just finished the button sets translations for these languages:
danish, russian, thai
In additon revised these sets:
italian (italian people wished some texts changed and delete_selected button is added)
hebrew (text modified according to translators wish, delete_selected missing)
I guess Indonesian haven't been done yet.
I'll do it then.

jami and davide are doing the Italian translation, where they are with it, I'll have to ask them, since we're coming into a new beta ;)

jami has written to ask to you for the translation ::)
we will still wait :(
I have an unformated Italian translation for Beta 4, which was two versions ago. I don't have an up-to-date completed translation, which is what I've PMed them about at the moment.
Wouldn't it be great if the translators that is on the official translator list would recieve an e-mail with a link to download the current Beta. Cause it might be great if the translators would get the possibility to translate the latest version. So that there is a translated version ready when the beta gets released for the public. Less big changes for the translators and they get to try the version at the same level as the charter members, but not get the same support.
I'm trying to get translators access to the language files, maybe weekly or fortnightly, which hopefully will make it easier to update.
Great :D
Just to update: I've edited the first post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7735.msg74000#msg74000) to include all the new translators.
I'm willing to translate the Chinese (traditional chinese, ZH-TW) version,
could someone tell me how to do it?
It seems like there exists a CVS there, who should I contact to?
If you read the first post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7735.0) that should explain most of the information needed. It's probably also worth contacting CapriSkye (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=2491), who is currently meant to be translating traditional Chinese, to see how far he is.
In regards to the CVS, there isn't much for me to try and get translators a copy of it at the moment, since Beta 5 public has been released, so everything you need is available anyways at http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php#lang

Thanks, I've read the first post there before I post my questions.
I made a mistake at that time, 'cause I didn't think the DOWNLOAD page even lists english language file there :(
Thus I thought maybe there exists some way to get the language source file :(
And the second, I've tried to contact CapriSkye, I replied his topic, and I sent him a PM.
But you can see in CapriSkye's profile:

im busy with finals so i will work on it during the summer. hopefully will get it done soon..
Well, no rush :)
Question: do we need to translate the help files?
Translate the xml files, yes...
-[Unknown]
If you have any questions about these, please don't hesitate to ask. While most of the content should be pretty straightforward to translate because the XML's been written with that in mind, some parts (eg the big BBC reference table from posting.english.xml) are still a bit clunky and might need some explaining!
Maybe I should really update the guildlines about the xml help files.
Something else I should point out about these files is that they were written for Beta 4.1 and, despite being updated recently because parts had already become misleading in a Beta 5 context, still haven't fully caught up with Beta 5 in some respects. So please do translate them, but keep those file comparison programs handy because we'll certainly be updating them again!
I've been creating the language file for Japanese for some time.
http://logue.xrea.jp/?SMF
Translation has ended mostly to a part for a user to usually use.
But Help section and some sections of Admin is not finished yet.
Great you do the japanese translation. However better email all files to bostasp. Currently you are not permitted to offer language packs for download on other sites...
Edit:
And now I found your online japanese smf forum, here is the link:
http://logue.xrea.jp/forum/
Looks great in japanese (sorry that I cannot read japanese).
I'll have to PM everyone shortly, see how everyone's doing... unless they tell me here ;)
Btw, the Norwegian translation for Beta 5 Public has been completed, it's attached to this post. But, I see there is an image missing, the delete selected image.
Andrea, Delete selected is supposed to be "Slett valgte", so you know that.
One more question, what is SMF Beta 5+?

Maybe, the weird thing is that there isn't a news post when you access the admin panel, like "Latest news from simplemachines.org", so maybe it's a private upgrade only for this site.
You won. :) Exactly.
Traditional Chinese is almost 40% ready!
I think I could be added on the list :D
We done everything else but ManagePermissions.english.php, Help.english.php, Errors.english.php
Admin.english.php is big,
Index.english.php is bigger,
and (watch) those 3 files left is even big >:(
SMF Beta 5 French Translation Pack: [in the Downloads]

French and Norwegian packed up and sent off to be placed on the downloads page.
French has the XML help files translated, as Norwegian does not.
Thanks guys :D
No problem. I'm going to send off the help files to be ready when the language pack needs to be updated for the next Beta.

True, but : there is a chance there are already more lines translated by others in the team, or there are lines added for a next release.
I mean, when I translate the files you say, will this then be up-to-date or am I then translating "old" files.... ? And what about the help-files ?
Generally speaking the Dutch, German and Spanish are kept up to date. There are CVS releases every day so any new strings would probably be added.
Saying that, I've never dealt with Dutch and German. They are translated internally, and I'm not efficient enough to have it constantly updated.
Well, beleive me, the files are not translated, there are a lot of things "not translated", so that's why I offer to help.
Allright, when there is nobody who can tell me what files exactly I have to translate, I won't be asking again.
Well, the portuguese translation is almost done. I'm currently translating the Help file.
I don't know if I have time (pacience) to translate the XML files right now.
Webby, in that case it would be best to coordinate with the person who translated the dutch files so far. I believe it is Compuart. I am quite sure he appreciates your help - but contact him first in order to avoid double work.
Edit: as bostasp already wrote below - check the 1st post and coordinate with the dutch language team.

Emailed it to you bostasp.
Webby, if you just directly send me chunks of translated "Untranslated!" blocks, I can get them into the next release cleanly. Yes, strings have been added and some existing ones have been changed.... but anything that is not translated here is not translated in the cvs.
-[Unknown]
I have translated already a lot, and will continue translating tomorrow.
When it's finished I'll send it to you.
Well, just giving me files won't help *all that much* because in the cvs I've already added entries. If I replaced the files with yours, come next beta all the Dutch users would get "undefined index" errors all over the place because of missing strings, and some strings would still be antiquated with old text.
Sure, I could diff the file... but that would take more than just a few hours and I really don't have the time for that.

I caused more work for who ?! Why ?! I'm trying for days now to offer my support. I IM'd Compuart on yabb.nl, he is the only one I know, and he's great. But he didn't reply to my IM (he has too much things to do I guess). I then translated the untranslated pieces in a few hours, and no tap on the shoulder ?!
Too bad.....I am still willing to help (and so I did with the Y1G and YaBBSE language packs), but it isn't nice to read that I caused you guys more work just by helping with the translation....
Ok, just tell me what to do, and I'll help you with it all, deal ;) ?
I'd pick Webby before I pick someone else :P! He did great things for SE (like he said) and he's a must for translation!! 8)
If everyone is translating one thing, and one person has translated one part of the language files, and someone is also translating that part without the other one knowing, then doesn't that cause more work for all of the folks translating into that one language?
Kris and XrD.nl also wanted to do some Dutch translation for the exact same reason you want to, cause so many bits are untranslated. Did you contact them, cause they might of been able to at least show you what they'd done?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love more and more people to do translations. I just don't like to see about 4 people working on the same untranslated strings without knowing that someone else is also doing it.
In regards to your translation, I'll pack it up and send it off for you, see if we can get it on the download page in the next few days.
It has been a while : 3 (THREE) guys working on 1 translation. I didn't contact the 2 you mentioned, but I did try to contact Compuart.
I still don't get it : I did it all to help, first of all for my own board, and second of all to help you guys and all other dutch users. I've uploaded it on www.yabb.nl, and the dutch users will use it if they want until the new (beta?) version of SMF will come out.
The only thing I did was speed it all up a bit and help the dutch community.
Furthermore : when did you receive the last translation(s) of any of these guys ? I was offering my help 10 days ago, and you were going to "have a word" with the dutch translators. Did you have a word with them ? What did they say ? Why wasn't I informed ?
I'm not getting you wrong, but I just didn't want to wait to get my board fully translated. Now it's done.
Hey Webby. Case you were in that list as dutch translator and just had not the time for a couple of weeks. Would you want that someone else took over your job - just because you had not the time to respond right now? Honestly? ;)
I tell folks who want to translate to do it when they can, and to talk to anyone else translating to see where they are. When someone says they are going to translate I don't expect to receive anything off them, nor do I press for a translation off them, I occasionally ask around to see how people are getting on, but that's about it.
If you look at French and Italian, they have two or three members translating for them, but I only receive one pack from them, not two or three. They work as a team, and again, I don't mind when or how I receive language files off them.
The way it's all handled is slightly laid back, but this is a project that is developed in people's spare time.
I understand the whole getting your board translated and translated at that very moment, but practically you cannot do it with a system where a few people are unavailable for various periods of time.
I haven't received anything from any of the other three Dutch translators, as I said before, Dutch, generally speaking, is translated internally.
Sigh... I dunno, it's fine. Thanks for translating Webby.

Don't get me wrong Webby, I'm grateful for your contribution :)

This isn't the case (as you can read in Bostasp's reply), but if this was the case....hmmm dunno.....
In the YaBBSE-period (;)) I made a full translation, and there was somebody who made a translation also (with a lot of errors), but I can't seem to remember being mad or dissapointed about him doing the translation also. No.
Well, it's done, let's go make the best of it ok ?
Hi,
I'm doing the Czech translation now and I've got a little problem. I'm using the classic theme - is it possible that it uses different stringset than default theme (ie. is default theme the superset or are they completely different)?
My problem lies in the somewhat problematic czech grammar which needs different prepositions in different contexts or changes the word suffix depending on the preceding number (1 uzivatel, 2/3/4 uzivatele, 5/6... uzivatelu {uzivatel=user}). The problem lies in string concantenation which is used. If I had the option to change the word order, I would write Uzivatelu: 1 (2,3,....) and sh*t would happen. This way it looks very strange.
Or am I overlooking something?
Also, is it possible to translate name of the theme?
I got similar (?) problem with Finnish http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7526.0
You can translate theme description by adding lanquages folder in that themes dir. Then put there settings.whateverlanquage.php and translate.
(Themes/yourtheme/languages/settings.somelanguage.php)
Hi Owdy,
interesting reading, but... I don't see any solution from the developers.
The differences between classic x default themes are a problem but not the real one. Real problem for me is that they're concantenating the {correctly translated} words into sentences which then don't make any sense in Czech language.
In classic, I currently have on the top:
Čau admin, máš 0 zpráv, 0 nových.
The code for this is in classic/index.template.php, line 106.
1] $txt[247] {hey}
2] username
3] $txt[152] {you have}
4] messages
5] $txt[153] | $txt[471] (any|1) {messages|message}
6] $txt['newmessages4'] {,}
7] unread_messages
8] $txt['newmessages0'] | $txt['newmessages1'] (1|any) {is new|are new}
This isn't going to work in czech language.
On line 5 it would need:
0, 5, 6,... - zpráv
1 - zprávu
2,3,4 - zprávy
On line 8 it would need:
0,5,6,... - je nových
1 - je nová
2,3,4 - jsou nové
I understand this isn't interesting for the SMF developers but I'd like some workaround for this. I really don't want to go the way of custom themes - this may work for default/classic but not for others...
The easiest solution for me is:
Čau admin, zpráv: 1, nových: 1
It's not 100% kosher either, but acceptable.
Would it be possible for some developer to comment on it?
The similar problem is in concantenation of strings and using some prepositions (on, by) = these translate different in different contexts, so when I change them somewhere to look better, it suddenly looks pidgin somewhere else ::)

Yeah, I did that, but I also wanted to translate their names, because I've got a conflict for Theme (Téma) word, because Czech XPs uses the word Téma for skins, but also Topic is Téma. So I translated Theme as 'vzhled' (look/appearance) and I don't want the users to be puzzled by the Theme word in the theme name...
You could probably translate the name of the theme, but to play it safe it's probably not worth it.
Grammar and which way round the number goes... ah. You could include a modified Czech theme which changes the way round it is written, since the number is in the theme and the translation is in the language file, so you can't change the order that way.
Just wondering, wouldn't it be worth putting the number (say it's $context['view_num_guests']) in with language files...
hmm... [Unknown] ...?
The "Hey, etc." part has already been moved into a separate string for the next release.
-[Unknown]
That seems like a good thing to do, sort that bit out so it's separated abit from the rest of the stuff. Oh, btw, after the next release is done, maybe do a rollcall (in this topic, perhaps) on when the translations for that release will be done, so you know when it will be ready to be added to the Downloads page.
I would very much like to have a rollcall soon, maybe even before the next release, since I've had one or two things crop up on me recently in my "life" and I feel like I've falled behind a bit, so I would really like to be able to see what is happening with everyone :)
I'm also forcing myself to learn Hindi, so be warned ;)
I have some questions resp. language file entries for theme name, description etc. Is the theme name not any longer in the theme_info.xml? If so then I am lost what is the current official entry location:
In earlier betas there was an entry field in the admin theme menu option where the theme desc was entered. There is also the theme_info.xml file and in addition I read somewhere about a settings.xxx.php language file which can be made.
For theme makers:
- where is the recommended location to enter the theme name?
- where for entering a theme description?
- is it sufficient to enter that information in english? / How must it be entered that it displayes also in other languages? / I suppose the english language file displays as always also in other languages if not overwritten by another lng file?

Theme name is in the database - it does not come from the xml file. Theme description is in Themes/themename/languages/Settings.LANGUAGE.php.
The xml file is only used for theme INSTALLATION. It is not used during runtime.

Thx Uk. And is it right that Settings.xxx.php is auto replaced by Settings.english.php case not present for language "xxx"? I am asking because for foreign language buttons I have only collected buttons strings. With few exceptions I would not be able to translate theme descriptions myself. If the file is explicitely needed for each language I will copy the english file.

Yes. Then description is just english, thats all. You dont have to put any settings.language.php there, then its just gives themes name and no description in theme preview. But if you want description, it has to be there. In those languages what you want to show it. Just copy that engilsh one and translate. :)
For reasons of proper internationalization, no... English is not assumed.
However, the default forum language (often English) is used over the user's language (might be German) - and the same is done for language files. However, English is not special in this affect.

SMF 1.0 RC1 French translation completed, attached to this message (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=16228.0). (The Help section is still in work.)
I see that Final is just around the corner, and is therefore only going to work on the Norwegian translation for my own private forums up until the release of 1.0 Final, which I think will be out within the next two months.
So I will not release any updated translations until two days after the release of 1.0 Final.
SMF 1.0 RC1 Hebrew has been sent off to be placed on the download page.
Hebrew comes with an additional theme so it can be viewed correctly. Anyone who has English-based themes on a forum which they wish to install the Hebrew language pack to will have to create a new theme.
I have updated the install.txt contained in the Hebrew package regarding the theme. If you want to install and use the Hebrew language pack on your forum, please read the install.txt file first!
That theme included a lot of files it didn't need (unchanged) and added html to the beginning of every template file, which would screw up attachments.
I've updated it, but I'm still not so hot on it replacing the default theme. I'd rather see it come with an installable theme and instructions on how to switch themes.
-[Unknown]
The current Arabic translation does not come with a theme, and as far as I know, the only change that is needed is right-left reading direction for both Arabic and Hebrew, so I don't totally understand why a theme has been included with the Hebrew pack.
I'm not too happy with it replacing the default theme either. The problems with creating new themes, upgrading, re-theming doesn't seem worth it, when I don't even know if a separate theme is necessary...
I suppose here you find the explanation why they included a theme:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=15578.0
A.M.A also made an arabic theme which is to replace the default theme for arabic languages.
I did not include the theme instead I've put a readme text file with a link to the Arabic theme here, something similar to what [Unknown] has suggested.

Does your RTL theme also work for hebrew? Or for arabic only?
yes it does.
Wouldn't it be best to have a sinuglar theme for RTL languages?
I think that would indeed be best. AMA, I don't suppose you might be able to compare the theme in the Hebrew package right now with yours, and see if there are any important differences?
We should probably have a right-to-left theme available for download separately from the other packages, but on the download page.
-[Unknown]
Did some fast comparison .. and I think my theme will work for both Arabic and Hebrew.
Some errors corrected in French package (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=16228.0;id=2620).
Should the official translators recieve a PM with a link of the updated English language package, to be able to have their translation ready before the Public release?
I'm bringing this up so that the official translators can stay up to date with the current version of the English package, not the forum package, but strings and modifications to the original package.
French language pack updated and sent to Mr. Language Coordinator :P

Andrea is the responsable for the buttons. She is taking care of it...
Yep.
11 new RC2 packages are posted here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7290.0
Please make sure to replace *ALL* buttons with the new version since the new version is better compressed, i.e. all buttons are much smaller.
For the languages which are still as RC1 there I haven't got yet the text strings which are new for RC2.
One question:
I am asked a lot to make also the classical buttons for foreign languages. Since the default buttons go from point of color view also for the classic theme and we have several free button generators for the classical style I did not do those so far. Is that OK ?
I definitely prefer 'classic' for the czech language:
a) 'Default' buttons are so tiny and barely readable. The czech language uses lots of accents and they don't fit well (IMO)
b) 'Default' theme renders incorrectly on my computer & Mozilla combination
c) I don't like 'default' theme at all :P
Regarding the free button generators - where is the generator which can grok iso-8859-2 strings and render them correctly?
Hi Andrea,
thanks for the link. I have replaced has you said and it's fine.
To answer to your question regarding classical buttons, I think they are very "elegant". If they can be translated to foreign languages by a "free button generator" (can you say where?), I think you don't need to work on that. But I'll appreciate a lot if they can be translated.
Carlos
Thanks Andrea. I'll replace the buttons in the portuguese package with the new ones.

My generator is able to handle them correctly - but that is not free.
Indeed - I tested the free online generators - one is not to be able to handle the czech accents, the other does not work currently.
Well - I am willing to create also classical style sets - under these conditions:
- I would like to create all languages in one step, that means I need
-- a list of all languages which need this set
-- the definitive list of buttons needed for 1.0
Definitely czech language 8)
Well, don't forget Portuguese ;)
Translate to Hebrew language is finish to RC1 but i wanna transate alone!
;D ;D
and i will open "Download Forum"
Hooah
If possible, could I have the following few strings translated into those languages currently available for SMF?
'subject_english' => 'SMF 1.0 (preview) for Charter Members!',
'message_english' => 'A preview of the final release, 1.0, is now available to all our Charter Members. Many things have been resolved, and stability has increased. Please upgrade as soon as possible, if you can.',
'subject_english' => 'SMF 1.0 Final Released',
'message_english' => 'SMF 1.0 has finally gone gold. If you are using an older version, please upgrade as soon as possible - many things have been changed and fixed, and mods and packages will expect you to be using 1.0. If you need any help upgrading custom modifications to the new version, please feel free to ask us at our forum.',
It'd be nice to have these all translated into the various languages before the release actually happens. And, please pm these to either me or Bostasp - and remember to tell us which language they're for.
Thanks,

The English language files for SMF 1.0 (preview) are available currently for public download on the download page. While this is without context, not much has been changed since RC2. A file comparison tool should help you update with the changes made, so you can have your language files ready for 1.0.
Language changes from RC2:
* Help
- Updated $helptxt['removeNestedQuotes'] slightly.
- Corrected $helptxt['attachmentEnable'], which was way off.
- Corrected $helptxt['m_queryless_urls'].
* index
- The forum copyright now opens 'Lewis Media' in a new window (not mandatory.)
- Added $txt['mail_send_unable'].
* ManageBoards
- Updated $txt['mboards_moderators_desc'] to reduce confusion.
* ModSettings
- Changed $txt['queryless_urls'].
* Packages
- Renamed $txt['package_ftp_neccessary'] to $txt['package_ftp_necessary'].
- Added $txt['package_no_zlib'].
-[Unknown]
Thanks, I will look into them afterwards. Just want to tell everyone who wants to try the Norwegian translation that it's now complete for RC2.

I am testing the translation and I can see that the pm/am indications in Last post column are not translated. Where exactly do I have to go to translate them?

Another problem with last post. In Greek what comes out is:
Τελευταίο μήνυμα στις Νοέμβριος 18, 2004, 04:59:43 pm
Last message at November 18, 2004, 04:59:43 pm
However, here the month (November) should be in genitive case (Νοεμβρίου) and the correct order for Greek would be 18 November, 2004, 04:59:43 pm (reverse order of month and day).
The same applies to the time indication in user information box.
Should I just change all the months in index.greek? What about the order change?
I think those are controlled by the time and date format which you can choose from the profile or cp.
i believe pm/am and order can be changed here:
$txt['timeformat_easy1'] = 'Month Day, Year, HH:MM:SS a/pm';
$txt['timeformat_easy2'] = 'Month Day, Year, HH:MM:SS (army time.)';
$txt['timeformat_easy3'] = 'YYYY-MM-DD, HH:MM:SS';
$txt['timeformat_easy4'] = 'DD Month YYYY, HH:MM:SS';
$txt['timeformat_easy5'] = 'DD-MM-YYYY, HH:MM:SS';
in Profile.*.php
...and the file(s) with the months name where are?! I have translated the month names in the file of index template (i think)
but it seems that is another one 'cos the translation I have done is only for the calendar :-\
Yes there are in index.english.php
am not sure tho if the lang_locale effects the time and date!
Anyone who has a complete package from a language listed (or not) on the first page? If yes, check if it's compatible to SMF 1.0 preview (download page) and mail it to
[email protected].
Please ask the other users on the list for already completed files of the translation, so that you can save yourself some work. You can also check other translations, but please contact the other authors if you change something.
Im going to try and make a klingon language file, it may take a while as its quite a task making a language file for a nearly non existant language but it will be fun, im just not sure if i can edit the images but im sure someone will help me by editing them, ill give them the words. HEre goes anyway.

What alphabet has klingon language? If its some kind of characters then we can probably make also klingon buttons with my translator. Have some sample texts?
Google has it (http://www.google.com/intl/xx-klingon/) as one of their languages ;)
Technically it uses its own form of lettering, but there are english equivs, just like their are for Japanese and such. It is a full, real language developed by someone who had a doctorate in mastering various languages. He was asked to create a real language for StarTrek, and so he created a perfect one.
The Klingon language can be written in Time New Roman, or Comic Sans MS or for fact any english fonts, there are klingon characters but to my knowledge nobody actually has a real set, its just made up it would be me like just typing message board and it would be klingon it wont just be chnaging the font and it would need installed on peoples servers which i doubt it is, but ill make one anyway, im not going to translate the errors or admin panel or certain other things, as i dont think the Support team would be able to help if they got a error given to them that said "Jhab Balh Illnub Jpek" (Made that up) but i dont think they would like me very much but if you want it in ALL klingon ill do that, but its actually funny the words "Message Board" dont actually translate to klingon without being "Hail Plank"
Message = Hail (after retranlation from klingon - english)
Board = Plank (after """"")
Hopefully ill get it all done this week, i dont have school on thursday and im off from 12 tommorow (Exams) but it should be done soon
[offtopic]
@ Andrea - You made the black mini buttons, I love them but why isnt there certain buttons like the little things that light up when a new message and the HTML and PHP signs (I can get those two) but it would be nice to see a more full set (Just a tip) The 6 themes im making all use them (Although i wont distrabute them with the theme but i will recomend them) Or wait andrea could I use them and in the copyright box put "Theme by Trekkie101, Buttons By Andrea Hubacher" and do you have a link you want it to goto.

Thank you for the work!! Great job! :D
I updated the list in the first post. There are still a few languages who don't have a translator. Are there users who are willing to help with these languages?
If you need actual language files, please download the English 1.0 preview from the download page [LINK (http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php#lang)]. Please post/PM me a timeframe in which you are able to finnish it and which language you'll translate. You can also contact the users I posted behind some languages and ask for the status of their files.
We need the following:
- Albanian
- Czech
- French
- Farsi
- Greek
- Hebrew (contacted tiredboy)
- Hungarian
- Indonesian
- Japanese
- Polish (contacted yossa and Andrzej)
- Russian (contacted Sensovision and DTG)
- Slovenian
- Turkish
If it's possible and you can spend the time, please translate the files before the weekend!It would be great if we can get some more languages! :)
Just to emphasize Daniel D.'s post...
The sooner things are translated... the sooner SMF 1.0 will be released ;). Further, I would like to note the following changes made since 1.0 (preview) - both not hugely important:
index.english.php:
$txt['mail_send_unable'] = 'Unable to send mail to the email address \'%s\'';
Added under $txt['smtp_error'] (around like 447.)
ManageBoards.english.php:
$txt['mboards_moderators_desc'] = 'Additional members to have moderation privileges on this board. Note that administrators don\'t have to be listed here.';
Changed.
There should not be any other changes for 1.0.

No, of course not, but the English versions should make the release and I thought that was worth pointing out.
Help files? ;D Can someone mail me the files for translating? It can't be true that the germans are not ready for 1.0... ;D
Ill be starting the klingon ones today, im off tommorow so i will be finished tommrow, also the translators im using could probably do the help files pretty fast, ill attempt it but first i have some questions. As klingong isnt a big langauge that is used and the language pack is purely for fun, should I translate the following files (If i do it will be harder to give help if theres a problem)
Admin
Errors
Install
Manage Boards
Manage Members
Manage Permissions
Packages
I know it seems like im missing a lot but im not really, those are just files that have messages it would be better if people could see in English as it may help them, but ill translate everything if you want.

Hi!
I started translating to Bulgarian and downloaded the English files for the PREVIEW release. However, I have RC2 installed on my server and when I set it up to use the PREVIEW files it complained that copyright information is missing and that my SMF installation is corrupt. Is there a way to go around this? Can I continue with the RC2 files?
Thanks,

Only the copyright string in index.bulgarian.php needs to be changed for it to work just fine with RC2.

Just merge it with classic Polish buttons you have and voila. I've just uploaded the most current version (the link is the same as in PMs from me).
Oh, and the help files translation is progressing well :)
PS. For Polish people here: the testing board with most current Polish files is available at this address: http://smf.geo.waw.pl/index.php
Good Job! It's better than old translation :P
I didn't finish my translation, because my HDD had few problems, and I lost files.... :-X
If the Polish files are going to be included in the download section anytime soon I strongly recommend downloading the most recent version from my server: http://www.geo.waw.pl/various_docs/smf/smf_1-0-1_polish.zip
Except for English classic buttons (Polish version of which both Daniel D. and Andrea have) it is pretty functional and I crushed many a bug in the last three days.
Perhaps you can ask Unknown, why they are not updated?
Why can't I download italian language from the download page?
The Italian translation, to the best of my knowledge, is not complete.
-[Unknown]
Thank you for putting the Polish files on the downloads page, [Unknown] :)
From what I can tell they are a little outdated compared to the version currently uploaded on the server, but at least they are finally there again :D
One thing regarding the registration agreement (which is not included in the language files hence by default it will always be in English). I came up with an idea of putting the translated agreement text in the "edit registration agreement" help box and informing user about it in the text that is located at the top of the registration edit box. This is included in the version uploaded on my server.
Firstly: is such a modification allowed in the translation files?
Secondly: if it is, maybe it is a good idea to make it standard?
Oh, and one more thing, I think it would be appropriate to include the links to translators' profiles in the download section. This way user will know who to contact directly if they want to know something regarding the translation (not everybody is clever enough to check this thread for the translators' info)
EDIT: These two files aren't included in the "Themes\classic\images\polish" directory:

I'm waiting for it for weeks. Will get a translation in a few days.
Can all translators please use the current SMF version numbers when naming their translations? The version numbers should correspond to those of the English files.
I have allways done that.
I've moved this topic to the Langauge Specific Support (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=12.0) board. It would probably be more suited here, as I presume the majority of people who wish to translate SMF come to these boards first.
The translation into Japanese was completed generally.The part which has not been finished is only a Help.
Since it is easy to come out of fault in case it outputs by RSS, using by multilingual in many cases, and, character code has been set to UTF-8.
Lang coords, could you put this to finnish 1.0.2 package, made some improvments. Couple statistic strings make more sense now. Thanks
Please take a look at the romanian translation and if you consider that it is okay add it to the download section. (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=29662.0)

Sorry, I didn't write anything about it.
We can't use them in the actual status. Nearly 50% isn't translated!! We need all files translated - please look in the first post to see which files we need. The .xml files are optional. The images can't be used because they're totally mixed up and contains other pics which are not in SMF.
Please look at the english images from SMF and write a list with the translation (default and classic). I'll send it to Andrea, who will make the buttons.
Okay, as I say`d this one is a beta version. I will finish the translation in a few days. I only have to translate the administration part, I thought that this is not so important for the users and the admin should know english. :)

There were many files which were not translated - I mean the download from last week.
Important is the translation from the images! Could you send the "words" to Andrea?
Yes, I will do that today, and the text translation I will finish in a few days (2-3).
Hi everybody!
I am here for a first time, so please don't attack me if the question I am going to ask is trivial or have been already asked and answered.
I am going to organise a Forum for my Russian speaking friends, so I need a Russian language package.
I have realised that it does not exist yet in a form of ready-to-install package. Is it the case?
Russian language is done. In fact it should be already on the download page. Otherwise you will find it posted in the russian language support forum.
Thank you very much, Andrea. I am going to find it out.

Ok, I have found it (SMF_1-0-1_russian.zip). I have installed the SMF 1.0.2 just now and I have transfered all the files to the corresponding directoty (themes). Nothing happens, I cannot even choose the Russian language among others, it does not appear in a pull-down menu...
Can anybody help me?
You have to copy the themes folder into the main folder of your smf directory. You've to overwrite the current one. Instead of this, copy the files manually in the Themes/default/languages folder.

You are absolutely right. I was completely confused with the files transfer. Now it works properly. I am so stupid in this field, sorry...
Glad it works. It would be the first time it doesn't...

Hello, Russian is
not on the language download page!
As a matter of fact, that page might benefit from some updating only
three languages are on it for version
1.0.3. Also, it would be very nice if someone could put really simple, easy and BASIC instructions on how to install language packs on that
same page, including such useful info as answers to things like
"Can I use a 1.0.2 language pack in 1.0.3?" and
"Can SMF provide users with the option to see the forum in their native language (i.e. run simultaneously in more than 1 language)?" Thanks.
I need the files in my email inbox. Link?
HY.My name is Samir.I am from Azerbaijan,Baku.I like this!And I ll translate this forum into Azeri language! I ll do my best!Thx! ;)
hmm... whats the policy on translations for the 1.1 betas
I always thought that the 1.0.3s would do, but lately I got feedback suggesting that there have been many changes to the 1.1 beta and the 1.0.3 translations didn't work.
Yes, 1.0.3 files wont work in 1.1. There are tons of changes. Translators have to wait publick releases if they arent CM's or team members.
Hm, I've finished Czech pack 1.0.3 some time ago, PMed Daniel D. about three times, no reply, no download. I'm getting requests from czech users time from time. Is there any problem with uploading czech language pack??
Some files have english strings (Help and Install are full english, ManagePermissions and Themes have english strings), so please change this. It has also strings in Modificatons.czech.php, which should not be in default.
Sorry for this delay, but there were other things I had to do.
hey everyone ,
i am new first time in users room thanks ! :D
see you later to talk anytime :-* hehe !

I translated the Chinese-traditional language pack to 1.0.4 (It was 1.0.2). It can be acquired from http://www.anetcity.com/bbs/index.php?topic=740.new#new.
The forum interface is in Chinese only, but it's ok to reply in English.
I'm not certain this is the right post to say this, but I don't know where to submit it. At least it's not mentioned in the download area like mods.
You should contact the language coordinators, Daniel D. (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=8) and Bostasp (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=profile;u=59), and send them your translation. They will add it to the SMF downloads page.

I'm going to do bulgarian. There is bulgarian version for 1.0.2 already with some light mistakes but the main problem is the charset - normaly must be windows-1251 .
I have testet on windows and linux based servers both with myqsl and apache. On the linux one works perfect but with windows i have to switch to english version to add a bord in cyrllic, and in myqsl the cyrillic is in unreadable simbols. Also bulgarian doesn't work with IE ecoding automaticly if in apache Default language is active.
Is here any special place to announce the changes of the Lang files that happens when a new version of files coming up.
For example I use EditPad Pro to translate the files and the only easy way that I can find to find the changes is to see where are empty lines one the Lang file so there I compare it with the one that is already translated and I make the changes to the old file. But it will be great if was a special place to announce those changes.
Any way if somebody knows something just let me know please.
;)
If you take the RC1files from the english package, you've all changes you need. The changes from 1.0.5 to 1.1 are too many to list. Please take a look at the english files and translate them. I think there won't be much changes till 1.1 final.
I have a friend who may be able to translate from English to Tamil with SMF 1.1 RC1, I'll talk to him about it.

Gri... I'm not one of the SMF administrators...
but I will say, based on a google search,
YOU are the ONLY person who "speaks" toogrian.
I am interested in translating it into korean language.
Please let me know exactly what files in langauge folder is related to users
and what files related to admin.
I mean for example in phpbb there are two files
lang main and lang admin
the lang main is all words which members who use the board can see
and lang admin is all translation for admins who manage the board
in smf what files are related to admins and what files are related to visitros and members?
As I said in the first post - you've to translate all files, whether they're for admin or not. Look at the file names to see their usage. SMF is different from phpBB (why not?).
I know I have to translate all files.
but I want to exactly what is related to admins and what is related to users?
shouldn't I ask this question? ::)
There are no files specially for admins and users.
Toogrian? A language for a population of just one?
That's quite an ego trip. Personally I'd call it "babble"
Quote
bab·ble Audio pronunciation of "babble" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (bbl)
v. bab·bled, bab·bling, bab·bles
v. intr.
1. To utter a meaningless confusion of words or sounds: Babies babble before they can talk.
2. To talk foolishly or idly; chatter: "In 1977 [he] was thought of as crazy because he was babbling about supply side" (Newt Gingrich).
3. To make a continuous low, murmuring sound, as flowing water.
v. tr.
1. To utter rapidly and indistinctly.
2. To blurt out impulsively; disclose without careful consideration.
n.
1. Inarticulate or meaningless talk or sounds.
2. Idle or foolish talk; chatter.
3. A continuous low, murmuring sound, as of flowing water.
... Yep. I think that covers it ;)
*lol* This is the last language I'll add in my life.

1.) Surprisingly I could not find an Italian Language pack! Will there be one? (need it for my users, I could unfortunately not do one)
but what I can do
2.) I would do language packs for certain regional german dialects
e.g. Viennese, Bavarian, Schwaebisch, Tyrolean, Styrian IF that is wanted.
I know, that some users of this regions would like that, but would you put them also on your download page? If not, I don't think I'll bother.
Actually, we're still looking for an Italian translator, you wouldn't happen to know one would ya? ;)
As for regional packages, we're trying to limit the amount of language packs while at the same time cover as many languages as possible. Maintaining the official language packs is pretty time consuming, especially since we currently convert all packs to the version of SMF that's being released, before the version is released. I'd be happy to create a sticky topic linking to all unofficial translations that are being made. We welcome every contribution to SMF!
I'm interested in Mongolian language translation. Because of extreme lack of time I wonder if just changing the buttons will do it for my little use.
But if I translate (no promise), how much is the volume of translation needed? Approximately how many pages of A4 format texts will it be? I know this sounds goofy. It is the fastest way of knowing whether i can handle it.
I downloaded some stuff from Translation FAQ, however could not grasp the volume of work needed.
Thanks for any feedback.
If you download the english files, you can look at them how much you've to translate. I didn't count the lines in A4.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,

Tell me if we get that translation or not! I am in need of it so I'm going to start. However, I can't do the buttons so I can give the words to someone else to do buttons for me.
Regards,
Dennis

From which translation are you talking about? ??? btw: You can use the buttontranslators in the posts above, but please tell me which translation.
Daniel, I believe that Dennis M wants Italian language files (he posted also in Italian SMF support).
In http://62.149.233.170/community/index.php?topic=1231.0 Italian language files for SMF 1.1 can be found. You must be registered to see and download attachments.
Thanks. Dennis M: Please email me the files. I'll put them to the download area. :)
Hello... I have Slovenian files 1.1 RC1 and some RC2 and I want to update them... Since I would not like to compare file by file, line by line, I was wondering if there is any list of difference and 'what's new' in language files from RC1 to RC2 and RC2 to RC3?
Matej
Never mind, I sort things our:) Kdiff3 solved my problems...
Please email me the files.
The translation is not full... It is only partially translated... I probably won't have time and need to translate the administration section...
Matej
Daniel, please check your email!
Ciao, Giacomo.
Ok, got it. Thank you!
Is it possible to add italian language as choice of the menu in this forum?
I'd like to view this forum in italian language.
Hi max22,
we're working on this. Please be patient, there will be a lot more updated languages in this drop down in the future. :)
I would like to ask about how language files have to be saved in ASCII and UTF-8 and the use of HTML entities.
The current SMF versions don't need to have HTML entities in language files, they just have to be read and saved with the proper encoding. However I see HTML entities for special chars in UTF-8 and ASCII language files of Latin chars (ISO-8859-1) languages.
Non Latin chars languages (Greek, Russian, Arabic etc.) don't usually use entities in SMF language files.
Especially in UTF-8 language files, the use of HTML entities has no meaning.
Thanks, I am hoping to translate SMF to bangla
I am trying to translate the index.php file and after I have uploaded it, it doesn't work. How do I translate it?
And why is all the numbers in english. How do you change it to andother language. What code do you need to change?
Please help
ssdt index.php is not a language file.
Read the first post (//http://) for instructions.
No thanks, I know what happened. It's just because I used SMF 1.1.3 in SMF 1.1.3.
But the numbers are not in the language that I want. So, how is that changed? Could anyone put the code for that? For ex. the date at the top of the page comes out in English. How do I change that and how do I change the numbers for each forum in the index, you know where it counts the number of posts and everything...
If you want some support for other things than language, please start a new topic in the support boards. This is only for translating issues.
what is a difference between UTF and a normal language downloads ?
The codepage used to create the files. For one its UTF-8, for the other it is ANSI.
I'm hoping the non-UTF codepages will be removed in SMF2.0 :)
To translate the pics, I need to erase the english. But when I do that, and cover it up, the picture becomes pixelated. Is there anywhere where there are pictures of the buttons and nothing is written on them?
Quote from: bostasp on March 18, 2004, 12:10:58 PMA button set generator, for instance, Marco van Veelen's Button Generator (http://www.marcovanveelen.nl/buttongenerator/).
First switch the browser to UTF-8 then choose SMF button style. Non English languages don't work in ISO 8859-1.
Did you try that ssdt?
No, did not work. The characters becomes blocks and they are not what I wanted. i turned on my character encoding to UFT-8. But still it did not work.
You must choose a font that contains the charset of your language.
That could be a problem with some languages.
ssdt can you post a word in your language to try with?
No it did not work. Can you see this?
কি
if you can, then there some other method
I can see one (or two) strange character, that can't be used with Buttongenerator by Marco van Veelen (http://www.marcovanveelen.nl/buttongenerator/generator11/index.php) neither with Bloc's Button-generator (http://www.tinyportal.net/button-generator/apollo.php).
I can make buttons in Greek, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew not in Chinese and your language. Bloc has explained in the past that it' s a matter of character sets available in the font used.
What I can think that you can do now is use the Buttongenerator to make empty buttons, then use a graphics program of your choise to add text.
Yeah, that's the only hope.
I would like to ask something else too. That is that is there any guides on how to translate SMF. If so, could you give me the link.
Thanks
Read the first post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7735.msg74000#msg74000) for instructions (I believe I mentioned it already twice).
Also How do I add a new language? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=476.0)
fatal error :S
www.waptr.org
I have translated some of SMF and when I want to use it, it doesn't work. I get an error message saying- Template parse error.
Then you forgot something in the files. Email them to me and I can take a look.

Oh, I thought that I could translate one file and then check them.
Thanks.
You can, but you deleted something by accident. Email me the file that causes the error or all if you don't know which one.
First: You should download english (!!), not english_british! Those files are not the ones who are up to date - please re-download!
You deleted the second point in here (index.xxx.php):
Quote' . $txt[28] . '
Do NOT delete anything between the quotes if a text string is called from SMF.
Thanks, I got it.
Now I need to know how to change the numbers so that they become in the other language. Can someone help me with that?
You don't have to change the numbers! Did you read the FAQ in the first post? You only have to translate the english words. If there is another number in the text string, don't touch it and leave it as it is.
OK, thanks. but I wanted to do that for my forum. I am not going to put that inside the translation.
You must NOT change the numbers because SMF will stop working. There is NO need for changing them. I don't know what you want to add to the translation beside translating the text. You can add all things into the strings, but you should not change the numbers before the strings or inside the strings surrounded with points and quotes.
Example:
Quote$txt['smf55'] = 'Hold down the ctrl key to select multiple entries. Click the ' . $txt[17] . ' button when you are done.';
Don't translate the red text or delete points, quotes or numbers! You can mix up the words in your language, but you should check what you translated.
Ok, I got it. Thanks...
If you've further questions, please post them here. :)
I want to know how to change the help file. It is in english. I want to know which file I need to translate to change the help. Could anyone please tell me?
Please look through the files! Help.english.php.
When I use Marco van Veelen's Button Generator, I simply get some funny text on the buttons. Do you have the same problems?
Thanks
im having problems displaying Japanese characters in my forum, I would like to keep the default in English but I just want to be able to type in Japanese and vice versa.. it would show in preview but it turns into question marks ??? after I hit the submit button..
Hey Daniel, I'm done with chinese traditional language, just need a bit of testing and i'll send it to you. can you also change the flag in the download page? right now it's showing the same flag as chinese simplified. this is the flag that we use,
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Flag_of_the_Republic_of_China.svg

Unzip the package and upload the Themes folder into the root folder of SMF. After that activate it in the admin panel and the profile settings.
How much more time will it take for Bangla to be avalible in SMF support forum?

Is there language pack for SMF 2.0 beta 3 ?
It depends on the language you want. :P

It depends on the language you want. :P
Even in the download section, English language, I could not see a package for SMF 2.0, only 1.1.5 available.
http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages;lang=english_british
I just want to translate to my language.
If you want to translate into your language, then use the English (Not English British) pack and translate the strings.
It's true that neither English language download page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages;lang=english) contains, at this moment, a language pack for SMF 2.0.
target_locked, until this is taken care after, you can use a slightly older English language pack smf_2-0-beta3_english (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/index.php?thanks;filename=smf_2-0-beta3_english.zip) from Archived releases (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?archive).
With this file you will see what files are included in the language pack. The latest 2.0x download (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/) will contain the latest language files too. If not yet done, read again the first message in this topic (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7735.msg74000#msg74000) for instructions.
P.S. The file agreement.txt should be translated too for a complete translation, might worth adding in the instructions.

hi again, im sorry for pumpin up my question
ive already install an arabic language pack on my forum, but still i cant write in 2 language in 1 post like the quote above
im using SMF 1.1.4
any help would be much appreciate
I'm currently translating SMF forum into my native language - Armenian. Here is the board you can see the results: http://armsoul.com and I think 50% of the forum I've already translated.
But I faced a problem which I can not resolve and couldn't find any information regarding this. When I activate Armenian language the verification code is not shown in the registration section. So users don't see which code they should enter during the registration and can not register. But when I switch the language into English or any other language it I see that everything is ok. The problem is only with the Armenian language.
Where should I look for the problem?
I turned off the verification code temporarily but I need this issue to be resolved.
Can you please help me with this?
Thanks in advance.
Hello Sench
It's quite probable, if you use UTF-8, that you have saved one or more of the language files with BOM prefix.
Byte Order Mark (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms776429.aspx) or BOM is a three bytes prefix, EF BB BF in hexadecimal, that gives the information that the file is a UTF-8 one.
It has been reported to cause some problems, it has been confirmed that it can be the cause for disabled visual recognition.
Check your language files for BOM, remove it where present and try to see if this solves the problem.
You can use Notepad++ to save the files as UTF-8 (without BOM).
agridoc, akyhne,
Thank you guys, I converted my language files into UTF-8 without BOM and now everything works fine!
Thanks a lot for your help!
I wanted to ask for the amount of time it takes for a language file to be seen in the site because I made one and have send it to the email provided but till now, I have not found that lang for about 3-6 months and that is Bangla. Please look at this problem.
