Otsikko: Q:About: Modifications="Yes! Some are GREAT!" vs "NOOO! Stay away, because..."

I just found out about the SMF and decided to after years and years leave the phpBB2 behind. For many reasons.

I am kinda curious though.
There is quite a bunch of Modifications to download for the SMF. Some wich for me is quite intresting. But is this a "good" thing to open up, or is it like a "Pandoras Box"? In phpBB2 the core coders didn't recommend installing Mods. This due to updateing to future patches might trigger hard conflicts.

Basicly they didn't say "NO! DON'T DO IT!", but they do say: "We don't recommend it, the best thing is to keep the forum vanilla.".

So how about Joomla?
Is it very sensitive to this?
Or is the ones you can DL from this site "safe" and checked and Mods. you can DL at other sites a grey area?

Whats do you as an experienced SMF user think about the whole thing?

If you know what you're doing: backup first, only install mods for your version of SMF, stop if it says there are errors, and if your host is not badly configured, then you should have no problems with installing mods. Most problems (for SMF) with mods come from people doing the wrong thing. As long as there are no problems with your host, then installing and uninstalling mods should be easy and quick.

Thank you very much for a fast reply Eldacar. :)

Ok.
The installation risks Im in the clear with then.
But what about core updating?

I have just installed:
1.1.rc2 (Yes. Beta I know! ;) )

But what about an modified 1.1.rc2 that upgrades to a future 1.2.rc1?
Is modifications to the SMF intigrated or coded so heavy that they meddle with the SMFcore?
Or are they usally put "ontop" or "along side" the SMFcore?

If you understand what I mean?

Major updates involve FTP upgrades, and so any mods will be removed (although if they use the database, their tables will remain so you can reinstall them later). Only security updates are made through the package manager. There is the potential for clashes with those, but seeing as security updates deal with security issues, for there to be clashes, you would have had to also install mods which alter the security functions, and that is pretty unwise IMO. Normal mods shouldn't clash.

Also, Only 1.1.0 -> 1.1.1 -> 1.1.2 etc updates can be done through the package manager. Major updates, like 1.0 -> 1.1, 1.1beta to 1.1RC1 or 1.1RC2 to 1.1 Final will require FTP upgrades.
