Hi, I installed the forum. But why are the default buttons without those images on the side.
the images in the folder look like this
but on the forum itself it looks different, like the ones here. why?

I guess what im trying to say is, when you install it, and using the default theme the menu looks like this
but where are these buttons located? and why aren't they using the buttons in the theme/images/english folder. The buttons in there look completely different from the above pic.

They aren't actually buttons, just text ;)
The theme here is the new default, called Core.
The button image you linked to is from the old default theme, now called Babylon.

Yep, the new menubar is just CSS and HTML (and PHP)...
