I'm thinking of installing SM for my message board. One question though, since this is a free service, does that mean I will have banner ads or pop up ads that display on the board?
Also, is there a setting where I can operate a moderated discussion board? Anotherwords, allow posts to be visible only after the moderator approves of it?

no you wont have any ads or popups...
simplemachines is free, there are no adds but you can't remove the copyright at the bottum. On the second thing, there's a mod for that.
