Title: SMF 1.0.7 and patch for 1.1 RC2 released
Post by: Compuart on March 29, 2006, 05:32:12 PM
Simple Machines is happy to release a new update to Simple Machines 1.0 and 1.1. This release addresses an input validation vulnerability of the X-Forwarded-For header. Also two small issues regarding search and polls have been addressed.

Note that the fix for the SMF 1.0.x branch will be released as new version 1.0.7, while the fix for the 1.1 RC2 branch will merely be released as patched version, the version of the forum will remain 1.1 RC2 (therefor, most of the modifications should remain compatible).  It should be noted that we have provided one update package that patches versions 1.0.5, 1.0.6, and 1.1 RC2.

If you currently have installed 1.0.5, 1.0.6 or 1.1 RC2, you can do either of the following to upgrade:
* Use the package manager in your administration center - one click, and you're done.
* Download the update archive file from the download page, and upload all of the files from it.
* Download the modification file, attached to this message, and modify the files manually according to it.

I did like about 10 boards in like a couple minutes. For SMF 1.1 RC2 just goto your package manager and quick on the link that's the easy way.

I click the "update" link in the admin area.  It gives me this response:  "The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF."  I an running 1.0.6... what is the problem?

You think the auto update through Admin is only for the 1.1?  Okay...

But I am nervous about uploading the files contained in the zip.  Are they going to overwrite my current folders, like attatchments, and the like?  I am very new to this, please help!

My question is would this erase all modifications I made through the source codes including packages I downloaded before??  :(

When you do the update, it will only update the files affected.  Those files are listed in RED when you do a detailed version check from the admin panel.  No template/avatar/image files are modified.  Only the core source is modified/replaced in this update.

It is safe to update this as long as you have not modified the core of SMF (why would anyone do that ? :) ).  It works with all templates/styles, and doesn't overwrite anything already on your server.

And if you FTP it up to your server, what's on there is only overwritten if you allow it.  If a file is on your server that isn't in the directory being uploaded, it won't be trashed.  It will be ignored.

Hope that helps!!

I got a message "Session verification failed.  Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again" when trying to update from the admin center. Is this because my forum (SMF 1.1 RC2) is bridged with Joomla! (1.0.8)? I can of course do manual update, but in the future it would be nice if I could run the updates from the admin center... :(
Any workarounds?

Hello,

Anyone know when (if?) the updated 1.1 RC2-1 files:

Poll.php,
QueryString.php, and
Search.php

will be included in either 'smf_1-1-rc2_install.zip', or 'smf_1-1-rc2_update.zip', or 'smf_1-1-rc2_upgrade.zip' files in the Download Section?

Thanks

This patch is not for 1.1b3. If you're using that version you'll have to use the upgrade package at the downloads page.

Not sure, I haven't tested it with Joomla, but it should not be a problem, unless something with the JavaScript fails.

I've uploaded two attachments containing the updated files for 1.0.7 and 1.1 RC2. You can use those to perform the upgrade if the package manager patch fails.

I updated one of my forum, by the package manager, and it worked fine.
But, on another of my forum, because of unexplainable chmod problem, I must use the update file... and there, I got this error :

QuoteThe upgrader found some old or outdated files.
Please make certain you uploaded the new versions of all the files included in the package.

I uploaded again the update, and got the same error... so, can't update :(
A solution?

Might indeed be caused by the safemode or because the $boarddir or $sourcedir in Settings.php are incorrectly configured or because there's a basedir restriction configured that prevents accessing the files.

Hi

I'm using SMF 1.1RC" and joomla 1.08 with the bridge and I have just installed the following via admin/packages:-
         Mod Name                          Version
1.    SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update    1.0

Result was very quick and received message that upload was successful.  However when I logged into  my site forum the following was displayed at the bottom of the page

Database Error: Table '_joom1.smf_sessions' doesn't exist
File:/public_html/forum/Sources/Load.php
Line: 1886
Warning: Unknown(): A session is active. You cannot change the session module's ini settings at this time. in Unknown on line 0.

Any ideas as to what the problem is....or could it be to do with another problem I'm having which I've posted in another forum

Not sure, but as far as I can see it doesn't appear related to the upgrade. Check if the table smf_sessions exists. If not create one by running a query like this:
CREATE TABLE smf_sessions (
  session_id char(32) NOT NULL,
  last_update int(10) unsigned NOT NULL,
  data text NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (session_id)
) TYPE=MyISAM;

If that doesn't work (or isn't the problem) then start a topic in the support boards.

Actually you can upgrade from 1.0.5 to 1.0.7 in one step. We've combined both upgrades into one package.

No thats a different case altogher.
Version numbers are different... many changes.
So you'll have to uninstall and remove all mods.

I've uploaded two attachments containing the updated files for 1.0.7 and 1.1 RC2. You can use those to perform the upgrade if the package manager patch fails.

A long quote I know...  I just wanted to say THANK YOU for making it easy for this noob to update his site!  It is appreciated.  You guys at simple machines are great, and the SMF forums kick arse!

Did you have any mods installed? If so which ones and did you uninstall them, update the forum and then re-install them?

In the 1.1 branch there isn't, in the 1.0 branch the 7 in 1.0.7 shows whether the patch has been installed.

Download a 1.1 RC2 language pack from the download page (section 'Languages') and upload them to the language directory (probably /Themes/default/languages)

Is the admin update feature not compatible with Windows? Permissions or access (CHMOD) settings?

I've never been able to update. I'm running 1.1rc2 and the Admin Package manager identifies what packages are available and provides a link to download them. This is the error message I always get:
An Error Has Occurred!
Unable to find package file!

And am I blind? I can't find this on the Downloads page
"It should be noted that we have provided one update package that patches versions 1.0.5, 1.0.6, and 1.1 RC2"

OK, I haven't seen this posted...I'm trying to download 1.1 RC2 patch and I get the the following:

QuoteError in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

The only change to the core that I made was the one suggested a few weeks ago within News and Update to fix the "Firefox bug": http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=66862.0 .  Is this the cause of my problem? or something else?

i tried to install the patch but some files are not writeable they say

Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager.

but what files are they talking about and where can i find them? ;D

I did the upgrade via packages and everything went smoothly but if an error occurs (when, since I'm a mod developer, it's almost guaranteed I'll see an error :)) I get an error that the database version is 1.0.6 and I should use upgrade.php to update the database.  Is this safe to do since 1.0.7 patch has already been applied?

I've written mods that exist in the database (e.g. smf_thumbs table).  This table will not be affected, will it?

Hej staff of SMF and other SMF gurus ;)

Sense yesterday after i used the update files to SMF 1.1RC2 I encounter a new error in my errorlog.

I havent had that one before, and nothing else is added or changed so i guess it must have something to do with the update i applyed.

The error turns up when i admin the download section and add or remove files from it.
I have used my download section a lot without any errors before yesterdays update.
Anyone here who might have an idea on what i should look for or change? Or should i simply remove the update files  :o

I used the 1.1rc2 update and installed it from the packagemanager. No errors on the files, and installed successfully.
I have posted the error message on TinyPortal aswell, but sense i didnt had any errors before the update yesterday i thought it might have been something from the updatefiles that didnt apply well even if the manager said so.

I have TP V0.86 installed to yes. But as i said before, I had no errors from SMF 1.1rc2 or TP before the update.  ???

Hi, I updated my version 1.1 RC2 through the package manager in a matter of seconds, all worked perfectly

I am however noticing a lag since the update

New post icons are remaining after viewing some posts and sometimes when I submit a reply etc, when it returns to my post after submitting the previous post is there but my post isn't, I find I have to refresh the page once or twice, or leave the thread & re enter to actually see the post

It only annoys me because my forum averages 450 posts a day & I am finding I am going back into already read topics because the new post icon has remained even though I've read it, after a few minutes it dissapears hence why I call it a lag

This has only happened since the patch, I haven't uploaded any mods etc since or even just prior to updating

anyone else having this problem?

The copyright is neither stored nor checked in database, but from language resource instead.  If the language is not being loaded correctly (or if it is malformed), then you'll see that error.

Maybe you can try a clean install retaining the database?

I do believe your host is using safe mode on there servers. You might have to talk to them about it. Try uploading it without using the package manager.

If you go into the admin control panel to the packages link and then click on "Download Packages" you can browse your computer for the package and upload it that way.

NOTE: Make sure the mod is on your computer somewhere.

I am using SMF 1.1 RC2.  I'm still kinda new to all this, and would like to confirm what I should do before I start messing with anything.  I have one mod installed through the package manager and other modifications that have been done manually.  So to install this patch, does this mean I have to uninstall the mod in the package manager, manually install the files in the patch, and then reinstall the mod?  And any other modifications I've manually done will only need to be redone if the changes involved the files in the patch?

Any help is appreciated.  :)

In the package center, its says

QuoteIf you have any problems applying it, you can use the version posted on the downloads page - although, any modifications you have installed will need to be uninstalled. Please post on the forum if you need more help.

So does that quote apply then only if you have mods that affect the updated files?  I'm trying to learn as much as I can as I go along.

Thanks  :)

Before you install, SMF first checks whether it's safe to install the mod or not. You'll either get a "succes" on the files or a "failure". If you get a failure, do not click "proceed" and upgrade manually.

Title: Re: SMF 1.0.7 and patch for 1.1 RC2 released

I went into the Package Manager.  Under Browse Packages, in the Latest Packages section, I saw the link
QuoteA security issue has been identified in SMF 1.1 RC2. You can install this patch (click here to install) to easily update yourself to the latest version.

When I click on that link, I get
QuoteAn Error Has Occurred!
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

So that is why I started asking about manually applying the patch, as I figured that was my alternative.

All you should have to do is upload all the files in the upgrade package by ftp to your host overwriting all the other files that are there. If you open the package you notice it has the same file structure as what is on your host. Keep it as it is and upload it all. After uploading all you should have to do is point your browser to upgrade.php and it should upgrade for you. Better get a second opinion on this just to make sure I have it all right.

NOTE: ALWAYS BACKUP EVEYTHING BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING

I have something of a problem.
I went into my admin and clicked on the update link.

After it updated it showed 30 success files.
However my site still shows that I am using Forum version: SMF 1.0.5

There is a box at the bottom that says "Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files."
The ftp info in the boxes is correct but nothing seems to happen.

Is this because my forum (SMF 1.1 RC2) is bridged with Joomla! (1.0.8)? I can of course do manual update, but in the future it would be nice if I could run the updates from the admin center... :(
Not sure, I haven't tested it with Joomla, but it should not be a problem, unless something with the JavaScript fails.

will be included in either 'smf_1-1-rc2_install.zip', or 'smf_1-1-rc2_update.zip', or 'smf_1-1-rc2_upgrade.zip' files in the Download Section?
Since it's a Release Candidate the downloadable version will remain the same. As soon as 1.1 RC3 and/or 1.1 final are released, the files will of course contain the patch.

I've uploaded two attachments containing the updated files for 1.0.7 and 1.1 RC2. You can use those to perform the upgrade if the package manager patch fails.

For those that are trying to upgrade 1.0.6 to 1.0.7 from the admin panel.  (ppuga)  And are getting the-

"An Error Has Occurred!
The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted."

Compuart already posted the files we need.  Look at his response to my question. (Page three of this thread).  Download just those files attached in that link.  (The 1.0.7 attachment.)  Connect to your server and replace your current versions with those only.  I experienced the same thing.  Downloaded the files he posted, connected, replaced, was done in two minutes.

Good luck,

IE does the download as usual.

We had the same error msg and I used chgmod to reset what I guessed to be the next few files in sequence and then hit proceed again.
It took several tries but did eventually finish.

There is a box at the bottom that says "Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files."

The ftp info in the boxes is correct but nothing seems to happen.

When you "get info" on a directory it shows the settings on the directory but this is not neccesarily the same settings that are on the files and subdirectories within. You need to dig in and check them individually. Fetch has a "select all" command on the edit menu of which I am very fond.

Good Luck

If you'll pardon me for saying ... I am getting the message that the patch is corrupt and I have a brand new install.... One user - admin ... one post ... welcome ... and all defaults with no patches whatsoever.

I tried through the patch manager doing a direct install... Corruption message.

Then I tried downloading the patch to my system and doing an upload and got the same message.

Unzipping the file and uploading the contents sounds a bit like 'The part won't fit' ... 'So hit it with a hammer until it does'.

I am left wondering if there is a deeper problem with my system or configuration that will cause greater problems in the future.

Does the fact that some of us have SMF installed under a subdirectory have anything to do with it?

Mine is installed under my_root/forum/

I am just trying to find out why my install is having problems.

Well, I went to the download page and since this is just me rebuilding my system, I looked at the release number and saw it was the same as the one already on my computer from the last download so I didn't bother to download it again.

Hence the reason most places use release numbers ... so that we know when there are differences.

Seriously, if you saw Widgits 1.1.rc2 install and you had a copy of Widgits 1.1.rc2 install sitting on your computer, would you bother with a download or use the one you already had???  :-\

LOL

Well, that clears everything up.

So you're saying that to find out if I need to download something, I have to download it and open it?

I completely deleted my site and am rebuilding from scratch.

I could NOT look at it from inside SMF if that is what you are implying.

I looked at the latest release on the downloads page which is "SMF 1.1.rc2 install" I then looked in my directory of downloaded components which says the same thing.

There is no mention of the security patch being incorporated into the release in the description "Installation package for SMF 1.1 RC2 (contains English only, download other languages below.)
Use this for a new installation, just run install.php after uploading all the files."

When I then went into the admin panel after doing the install, I found the announcement of the security patch and noticed the 'red flag' on the sources.

I tried to download it from the Packages directory and received the 'corrupted message' that you see other people have posted.

I downloaded the patch directly to my computer and tried to 'upload package' from there and received the same message.

My next step seems to be a choice of two things ... delete and re-install or do as suggested earlier and unzip the package and manually copy over the files.

My questions are: why can't I get the package to install in the first place?; what is wrong with my install?; and what is going to happen in the future when more patches and packages are released?

Am I and the others who have experienced this problem going to have to manually install packages continuously?

If you think the release on the site has the patch installed, I may take the option of a complete reinstallation since the forum is empty now.

I do however suggest that if you ARE going to continue to add patches to releases in the future then change the file name so we know. If internally it has an additional '-1' then let's see it in the file name too.

I do my changes via Dreamweaver and the deletion process is quite slow not to mention the upload of the files.

Well, I can safely report to you that the patch is NOT applied on the version in the download directory.

Having just downloaded it and installed it from scratch, these files are still showing red and are not at the -1 level:

The patch also still errors out as corrupt.

Last step ... last ditch effort ... Download ... unzip and copy manually.

chinathetimes, generally whenever we do a security release we update the version number, this is why 1.0.6 became 1.0.7.  This however causes some problems with mods written for a particular version.  So for our release candidate we decided to keep it RC2.  Also if we had updated it to RC3 people would have, rightly so, gotten the impression that it would be a closer to the finish product, which unfortunately is not the case.

I am not quite sure what you two are talking about.

#1 the release in the download directory does NOT have the changes applied to it. I just downloaded it and installed it.

The question is still outstanding as to why 2 or three of us were unable to apply the patch by the standard method and had to resort to manually downloading the patch, unzipping the file and copying the files into the structure before uploading them as files.

It worries me that if we do not find the cause of this, several of us may have to resort to the same thing during the next major release.

I am not trying to be difficult but am attempting to give you as much information as I can about my experience in 'applying' this patch so that we can get to the bottom of it before it becomes a real problem for some noobies.

While my experience does not really allow me to contribute as a coder or in the areas of documentation, I can act as a fairly well informed 'trained idiot' who has broke the system.

Please, use me as a resource and let's find out what is preventing the patch from applying itself on a greenfield system.

  • poll.php
  • QueryString.php
  • Search.php

The patch also still errors out as corrupt.

Last step ... last ditch effort ... Download ... unzip and copy manually.

I Have that EXACT same problem here as well. Same files.

Well HarryWx, It's exactly like they said:

Unpack the patch to your forum directory on your local site and, if you use winzip with the directory structures retained and overwrite turned on, it should put them into the right places.

Then, post them live and remember the pesky script.js unless you want anyone who runs Firefox to hammer your site with reload requests.

The question is still outstanding as to what causes this 'corrupt file' message and if ... in the future with a more complex patch or release upgrade ... you and I and a few other poor souls are going to have to do those manually too.

;)

Hi

I downloaded and updated manually smf using SMF PATCH file. I changed all code in files according to 'smf_1-1-RC2-1_patch.mod' yet in admin section i still get the message that security patch was released and i should install it. What on earth am i missing here? It's very unclear how to manually update this forum having 5 extra files in the update package..

PS: Auto install not possible as i don't want to uninstall all the mods installed!

You shouldn't have to uninstall any mods. The patch only changes a few files that mods are unlikely to touch.

I have zero idea how to do what you just said.

I dont understand why this patch cant work for me/us using the admin panal route.

Why cant it be fixed?

Ok here is the deal everyone.  You MUST download this update from THIS page NOT the downloads page for whatever reason. Then go to your FTP client ( Or wherever you install files on your site via the cpanal or whatever you are using ) and delete the files in sources known as

Poll.php
QueryString.php
Search.php

And replace them with the new ones uploaded in this package.

I am confused now  :(
When I do a version check in forum maintainence those are the only files marked with the -1
I installed using the admin panel when the patch was released.
Does this mean it was only those 3 files that were changed?
Or does this mean the patch failed on other files?

oops I found something
Poll.php   1.1 RC2-1   1.1 RC2-1
QueryString.php   1.1 RC2-1   1.1 RC2-1
Search.php   1.1 RC2-1   1.1 RC2-1

Calendar.php   1.1 RC2-1   1.1 RC2

Calendar says my version is -1 and current version isnt?
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.7 and patch for 1.1 RC2 released

Only those files changed because it was a patch and not a release.

You only need to act if you see them highlighted in red.

With the patch on the downloads page, it also includes the patch for the java script that prevents Firefox from giving your site problems too.

The calendar thing is strange but not a problem.

There was a minor bug with the calendar and it was changed sortly after 1.1 RC2 was released, and the download package was updated with it as RC2-1. It's all good.

I uploaded again the update, and got the same error... so, can't update :(
A solution?
My bad, try attached upgrade.php

The same problem is for me with a fresh install of 1.1 rc2.

Why the main package in the downloads are not updated?

Install new versions of the SMF files to your host. They are included in the upgrade package, but not update package. Also upgrade your language files, if you have.

If it is always, then there is a misconfiguration. But if it is often, but not always, it is a host issue.

Connection problems can often be sorted by using repair_settings to repair your settings.php file. To be honest I have never had any issues upgrading SMF from the day I started using it. I would recommend anyone to uninstall your mod before upgrading.

Total newbie here :) .  I just installed SMF via Fantastico and it told me I needed to upgrade.  However, it keeps saying there are files I need to change permissions on and asking me to fill in FTP info.  I have changed the permissions on all of the folders listed on that page via cPanel, still getting the message.  I gave it my ftp info, nothing happened, just keeps going back to the same screen.  What's up?

Fantastico installs it into another database.

I seem to remember the process being posted into one of the stickies recently but here's an older reference:

Quote from: Orstio on December 31, 2005, 03:37:05 PM
Separate Databases:

If you have installed Mambo/Joomla and SMF with Fantastico, or you installed them in separate databases intentionally, you will need to grant permission to the database users to access each others' databases.  If you have your forum and CMS installed in separate databases, and you have not granted access properly, you will most likely run into the "_LOGIN_INCOMPLETE" error in Joomla.

Here's how to grant database permissions:

1) Go to your site's cPanel.  Click on MySQL databases. (Do not Proceed to PhpMyAdmin!)

2) Near the bottom of the page, you will find two dropdown menus side-by-side.  One is labelled "User:" and the other "Db:".

3) In the first dropdown, select your SMF database user, and in the second dropdown, select the  Mambo/Joomla database.  Click the button that is labelled "Add User to Db".

4) Now go back to the same page again, and do the same, adding your Mambo/Joomla User to your SMF database.

Now you are set up to run your forum and CMS in separate databases.  :)

This may not be the most up to date info so read through the stickies or do a search on Fantastico.

Thanks, China...but first I'm simply trying to upgrade the SMF install to the newest version and can't do that.  Fantastico is installing 1.0.5 and it wants to upgrade to 1.0.7, but I can't seem to get that done...that's where I'm having issues.  Though it is definitely great to know your tip...I'll go take care of that now.

Thanks!

I will admit to not having read this entire thread......I apologize for that but I just have a coupla questions.

I am currently running, SMF 1.0.5....no Real problems other than error emails, that nobody can explain...So, do I really 'need' the upgrade?

and.....
Quote"If you currently have installed 1.0.5, 1.0.6 or 1.1 RC2, you can do either of the following to upgrade:
* Use the package manager in your administration center - one click, and you're done."
I did that....and it still has me with SMF 1.0.5.....did I do somethin wrong?

TIA for any answers! and TYVM for SMF! :-* :)

Bigguy, tyvm!  :)

Now, could you please tell me the easiest way to go about this???

BTW, another question I have....if any help is available....
if I go into FTP.....copy the entire directory onto a disc....would that be considered a 'backup' and would it include my SQL database? or would I have to backup that from somewhere else..(ie: my webhost?)
I am really clueless.....thankyousoverymuch! :) :)

Doing a copy of directories backs up the programs only.

To back up your database requires you to go into your host ... if you have cpanel or another utility it's fairly easy.

It doesn't get hard until you have to recover.

Then it becomes a tedious task of editing the complete backup into individual parts and sub parts so that you don't time out.

Yes. Even if you don't upgrade to 1.1, you need to upgrade to 1.0.7 which fixes a few security holes in 1.0.5 and 1.0.6.

Try what eldacar said but the settings you are looking for are: In cpanel goto file manager. Go to the folder that has all the smf files and folders in it, click on the NAME "Packages" after that in the top right corner you should see some more options, click on  "Change Permissions" then in the same corner you`ll see check boxes, put checks in until it reads 777. If you have a no access it might mean you don`t OWN that file or folder in which case your host will have to change ownership back to you. (I think)

I do not have any file manager installed in my forum - admin area, otherwise please tell me where i can find it.
My settings for the Package folder is 777, i was able to change it and i have checked it again right now, it is 777. however the temp folder, i am not able to change it.

Post by: Bigguy on April 28, 2006, 09:38:01 AM
No I mean the "File manager" in cpanel. If you have it changed to 777 thats good. As for the temp folder, this is just an idea, but if you ftp into your account and goto that folder, to the right of it if there is a "99" next to it, that means that nobody "OWNS" that file or folder meaning you can`t change permissions on it. It has to be OWNED by you in order to change it. This is something your host will have to change for you. Hope that makes sense.

Either run the patch in your package manager or upload the contents of this to your server manually.

There has been a recent patch for 1.1 RC2, but the download package is not updated.

Go to your admin panel. Select Packages on the left. There will be a small frame which tells you to patch SMF, by clicking here... etc. etc.. Just click there ;)

Ok, sorry, more clarification:

The first post in this topic contains an attachment, smf_patch_1.0.7_1.1-RC2-1.tar.gz

download it and upload via
Admin > Packages > Download Packages > Upload a Package
then follow the instructions there.

Ok, you have incorrect language files :) There are a lot more missings texts in your admin panel.

What is your language? I think it is Portugese or Spanish?

Yes, you're right. My language is Spanish but I think that is for 1.0.6 version. Now I have this problem:
QuoteSome of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager.
Wich are the folders I need to create or where is supposed I need some permissions?

Hi,

there seems to be a problem with my board.
I just installed a complete new clean version of 1.1rc2, no mods, languages, themes. Clean as can be.
In admin I get the message to update and as I read there and here, it is as easy as 123.

In the list I have:
1. SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update 1.0
2. SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update 1.0
3. SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update 1.0

But no matter if I use the fast one (click here to install) or one by one, I get a warning not to proceed. The errormessage are with all mods the same: Modification parse error

Now what? I can upload it by hand, that is no prob, but how will I know that is save, because than I get no warning.

Fried my board with the update/upgrade too.

Sorry, just say no if you are in doubt. Unless you are a programmer and have days to spend fixing it, leave it be.

I leave it too, but those updates/patches are there to us. But sure would like a solution. And besides that, it is strange that a clean board has this prob, not?

Please would you people note that, you can upgrade by just applying the files from the zips provided. (Not the patch one)

Do not refresh when installing a package & only click the install button once!

If you are not logged into this board you will not see attached files.

I will attempt to paste a link to the files described in a post on page 3 of this topic for those who are not logged in.

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=78841.0;attach=14677

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=78841.0;attach=14676

After download, extracting, and copying the 4 files to their proper locations, the version discrepancy messages went away after doing a 'more detailed' check ( poll , querrystring , search )

I lost 2 hours trying other things because I could not see the attachments. Hope this saves others some time.

If the links do not work, I hope an admin, or moderator will fix them.

Hello everyone!

I'm a newbie. :D  I've decided on a couple of themes that I like. I've downloaded the recent SMF 1.0.7 release, but I see that some of the themes that I like are for 1.1 RC2. What's the different between these 2? Is RC2 more flexible or has more features to work with? I'm assuming if I have 1.0.7 I can't use a theme for RC2. Can I download RC2 or will this cause conflicts if I change themes at a later date to a 1.0.x version?

Thanks for your help.

Below is my message from several days ago. I've gone thru this thread and could not find anything related to my question. Could someone help me, please? I would like to get my forum up and running fairly soon.

Thanks for your help  :-*

Another question: Why arent 1.0.x and 1.1RCx together as an option in the same package for download? If these 2 are required anyway, it only makes sense. As time goes on, people can update the pkgs and patches. If you don't want to put them together, I think on DOWNLOADS a "notice or suggestion" to download both packages would be beneficial to everyone in the long run.

1.1RC2 is a early release of next stable version of SMF : 1.1.

This mean that the current stable release is stil versions 1.0 (last is 1.0.7)

1.1 bring lots of new things, and 1.1RC2 is considered by many as stable enough to run.
Make your choice : stay with 1.0.7 until 1.1 Final released, and use themes that are 1.0.7 compatibles, or upgrade your forum to 1.1RC2, and corresponding themes. It's as you wish :)

I noticed a post earlier about upgrading to 1.1 RC2 after already having  1.0.7.  I have 1.0.7 up and running at this time, but I would also like to get the features of 1.1RC2.  I am having a hard time figuring this out.  I already have the forum set up in the /public_html/sfm dir and was wondering what I needed to do to get the upgrade.php file to work.  Any help with this would be appreciated.  Thanks

I was checking around in the admin panel in the modification packages and this was listed like 8 times SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2 Update, does this mean i already have 1.1 RC2 installed ?? or am i just confusing myself.  ???

I have just been directed to download your 1.0.7 by one of your very satisfied customers...He talked me out of yaBB's latest version.  I am a newb webbuilder, totally, and I have a question or 2.
1.  If I download the zip file, How do I load it to my website?  I had a problem with a zip file the other day;  so I figured I would ask, before downloading?

2. Do I need a database set-up before I attempt to download to site?

thanks ahead of time for your time and response...hygron

Download the zip file from this site. I personally think you would be good to download smf 1.1 rc2 but 1.0.7 is very stable and fine to use. Once you download it, unzip it to a folder on your desktop. start your ftp client and connect to your site. Upload to your host. Go into your cpanel, if you have it and make a database, make sure to add a user to that database with full priveledges. Point your browser at http://www.yoursite.com/smf if this is were you uploaded the files to. Follow the instructions from there on out.

I think there is a readme.html with the install zip which would explain things better

There's probably not been any changes to that file since 1.0.1 so it's version number didnt get updated to say 1.0.7... I think.

I just set up a new SMF board and wanted to upload the latest version. In my package manager, I read this:
A bbc security issue has been identified in SMF 1.0.5. You can install this patch (click here to install) to easily update yourself to the latest version.

When I click there, it asks me where I want to put the file index.php. Then nothing happens. I get this also when clicking the other link to this patch found on the same page. I believe this index.php file is from the theme modification I was trying to upload. I ended up completely deleting that theme modification from both the admin board and from my pc.

What am I doing wrong??

The 1.0.7 update package on the downloads page (http://www.simplemachines.org/download/l) will do what you are looking for :) It's probably a server configuraton problem.

As long as you download the upgrade package for RC2, then it shouldnt change your settings, rather, it'll add a whole bunch of new ones for you to play with. ;)

You can not change from 1.0 to 1.1 in the Package manager, you have to upload the files manually in your FTP.

If your FTP only lets you upload one file I'd say get a new client. Try SmartFTP or WS_FTP, where you can select multiple files and folders and upload them in one go, and everything in a folder will stay in that folder and wont be dropped.

You could probably upload those 3 files and overwrite the old ones, I would think. If you do make sure you BACKUP everything first.

I have the Spoiler Tags, Smf Shoutbox and Arcade mods installed. There is no problem?

If any of those mods touch those 3 files then you might have to add the code to them manually in order to get them to work, and remember to back everything up first.

I'm trying to update to SMF 1.0.7 / 1.1 RC2.

However, when I click the link for the package manager to do this, I get this screen with this message:
"To download packages, the Packages directory and files in it need to be writable - and they are not currently. The package manager can use your FTP information to fix this."

When I try to enter my username and password, along with
FTP Server = localhost
Local Path to SMF = /bbs
Port = 21

and click "proceed", I'm still taken back to the above screen

Can you help?

Try doing a search. This is probably the most asked question on the forums.  ;D ;)

Probably the most asked and the least answered at the same time ;)

The most accurate answer can be found here: SMF Newsletter - 2 (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=99091.0)

Surferbird, if you're going to troll, do it on another site.  For the rest of the people wondering about an ETA of when...

would you rather have a release that has security or bug issues, or would you rather SMF takes its time to ensure a solid and stable release?

It hasn't been so fast, but it's not really been slow, please remember that by now all features are in 1.1 and its now down to fixing any bugs that have been created. As there is nothing really new (with the exception of captcha) there isnt much to miss out on, 1.1 Final wont have as many new features as RC2 did. Final is on its way rest assured, it won't be long, and soon enough it'll be here and then the new version will be on its way which will have more features, to be fair RC2 is pretty much the end product, but with a lot of fixes and little changes along the way.

And city of Rome was builded on one day to  :D

Keep up the good work, better a stable and secure version then a buggy with a lot of annoying errors, Take all the time needed to make it perfect, no need to rush. If you release it next year doesent matter, it's a good software, and to all good things, it's well worth the wait :)

Thank you SMF !

If you meant the city of rome was build on 1 day, thats quite incorrect. Its called mythology, so its not historically correct or even in my opinion, accurate. :P

Surferbird, what Douglas & Trekkie101 are explaining is what to expect with 1.1 in the very near future. 1.1 RC3 has been released to Charter Members and will probably go public in a week or two.

If I were you, I'd stop your flaming. Douglas, Trekkie, eldacar and everyone here is trying to help and explain the situation.

As Douglas says, I'd much rather wait 6 months for a stable release then a week for buggy software and end up with version SMF 1.1.78.

1.1 RC2 has UTF-8 broken in contrast with previous releases as mentioned here in the forum, why it was released? Because, 2 months later a cvs release fixes most of them but it is only available to charter members who are paying.

I have no problem with your ETA, but at least say the truth: "This is a commercial open source forum software that every year it is published free to everyone."

RC2 is not final software and its mentioned in the annoucement that its really up to you if you wish to update at your own will. RC3 has been released to charter members and then a pretty serious issue was found, so our plan of releases actually works, as we don't now have thousands of installs all with the same problem but instead we have caught it.

RC3 is coming, of that I promise you, you aren't missing a great deal apart from bug fixes, and then 1.1 Final will make an appearance and focus will switch to the development edition.

Just a heads up, in addition to these two releases, an additional security patch is available for 1.1 RC2 for those who do not wish to immidiately upgrade to 1.1 RC3 (for instance because the modifications haven't been updated yet). The patch is only available in the package manager and after the previous patch has been installed.
