SMF Version: SMF 1.0.6
Hello. I am looking into upgrading SMF from the 1.0.6 that I have now to a new version. I see that there is a 1.0.7, as well as some 1.1, but I couldnt find out the difference without reading through pages and pages of posts of which I dont have time to do. So, the first question is I was wondering if anyone could tell me which would be better to upgrade to?
The second question/ problem is that I am new to SMF and I just took over a forum with it of course installed. I have only used Perl message forums before, so those PHP and MySQL stuff is foreign to me. I cannot have my site down for too long as it gets alot of traffic and being that I dont know what Im doing, it concerns me. Of course I know to just upload it and run upgrade.php, but it scares me because its so different than what Im used to, much less the problems I see here on the board. I dont want to start an upgrade, have a problem and not be able to get it fixed for days at a time. I have created a backup of the database from within the control panel, but how do I restore the information should something bad happen? I guess that is my main concern. I can be brave LOL and attempt the upgrade, but I need to know what to do if it doesnt work right away. How do I restore everything immediately? This doesnt seem like a drag and drop operation through FTP like a Perl board would be.
If someone could please advise, I would be very appreciative. Thanks! :)
1. It's all a matter of feeling comfortable using beta software. 1.1 if not 100% stable since it's stil lon it's testing stage but it is very stable. 1.0.7 is a final version and is the most stable version available.
What Perl board are you using? If you are sing Yabb then you can use the converter and convert your posts.
If the upgrade form 1.0.6 to 1.0.7 is a very small upgrade and it only changed about two files so everything should be good but if anything happen use restore_backup.php. Do a forum search for it.
