Aargh, I'm almost about to give up installing SMF properly so somebody please help me!
I run both a .com and .org site. Both are using the same single database. I initially installed SMF in .org and it installed well. But I decided to have SMF in .com so I deleted the SMF files in .org and even dropped all smf_ tables in the database.
Now when I copied all the files to .com and tried using the install.php file, I get this error:
LainaaConnection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
What surprised me more is I dropped all smf_ files in the database and deleted ALL SMF files in BOTH the .com and .org site and yet when I go to the index page in my .com site, I still get the "Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database." error... But I thought I already deleted everything related to SMF? :(
Help please!
Make sure that the databse information in Settings.php is correct.
Thanks for the swift reply but my next question is, that means I need to re-install everything first right? 'Cos I don't have any SMF files right now on either my .com and .org sites. Then I'll reupload settings.php with the correct sql info of my .com, the place where I want tp install SMF. Did I get it correctly?
Since you do not have anything right now download the install package and upload everything. That should work.
Uh-oh I think I have a bigger problem, hopefully this can still be solved.
I tried downloading the installation files from the site and uploaded them to my .com site and tried to install SMF but it still didn't work. I still got the "Connection problems:
So I tried to edit settings.php and changed it to my correct mySQL info. It still didn't work. The "Connection Problems" error persisted.
So I used settings_bak.php, changed the mySQL info, renamed it to settings.php, deleted the original settings.php file in my server, and installed SMF. There's still that "Connection Problems" issue.
Now I resorted to using the repair_settings.php file. I uploaded it to the server and tried to run it, but I get an Error 404 File cannot be found error.
Waah! Help me please! :-\
Weird issue. Reupload all the files using a different FTP client and change permissions to 777.
I'll try that later. For now, I reinstalled SMF in my .org site and surprisingly, it installed and now running well. But I want to move it to .com and I'm wondering what alternatives I have? I have a separate thread here (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=81848.0) regarding this question.
I replied to that thread ;).
You rock, Jay! Woot woot! :D Thanks for the swift and useful replies.
If it's not too much, can you take a look at my other questions HERE (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=81620.msg543774#msg543774) and HERE (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=56973.msg543235#msg543235). No one seems to notice me there :)
Thanks very much. Really appreciate it.
First thing what version of SMF are you using?
