Title: SMF 1.0 Beta 4.1 Public Available
Post by: [Unknown] on March 27, 2004, 10:31:10 PM
We would like to invite all of you to test this new version of the public beta.  It is considered a critical update, because bugs have been found and resolved that might cause data loss in some cases.  Remember, we expect there to be bugs, and the purpose of a beta release is to facilitate finding and fixing all of them - but we're still trying to keep on top of the more critical bugs, as closely as possible.  Please don't ask for a final release date, because we are still working on it.

While updating, please note that many templates and language files have changed.  For details, you can check the changelog - however, in most cases these changes won't cause problems unless you:
  - modified the default theme. (you should create a copy instead...)
  - are using language files other than the default four. (they should be updated soon, though.)

Remember that we always listen to feature requests, bug reports, and questions about the code.  Code review is a wonderful and great part of any project like this.  For more information on how to get involved with SMF, please see the page about just that (http://www.simplemachines.org/get_involved.php).  But remember, sometimes what you think is a bug might not be what we think is a bug; sometimes you will want a feature we don't see as part of the distribution.  We still want you involved, and some of you can help even more by making packages, themes, and so forth for SMF.

Please remember to read the license.  Even if you do not, you are bound by it and may not redistribute SMF or change/remove any displayed copyrights.  We will go after people who do not follow these terms, so if you are not willing to abide by them please do not use SMF.  Remember that, currently, you are not allowed to redistribute any of the files, in part or full, released in the packages available for download.

For new users - it's important to note that this is a big change from YaBB SE.  While it may seem to work the same in many ways, one look at the code... one look at the templating system... should show you it is not at all the same.  Many settings and options have changed and been moved, and it is highly recommended that you play with a separate install or upgrade before upgrading your main forum - if you must, indeed, use it in production.  It will take you time to get used to where the new settings are, and it will take time to ask questions here.  If you prepare, you won't have to worry about emergencies later.

You can always find information posted here about things like installation (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6765.0), upgrade (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=6832.0), and more.  As development continues, you will see more and more tutorials, FAQs, and manuals for SMF - this is just another part of development.

If you need any more help with anything to do with SMF, please do not hesitate to ask questions (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=9.0). And for those who need a little to get going, the downloads themselves are, of course, here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php

Thank you for being a part of SMF,
Simple Machines

Ran the update succesfully and get this error on top of every Administration Center page in the default and classic themes:

Notice: Undefined index: theme_current_settings in /home/joker/public_html/smf/Sources/Subs.php on line 1277

Any ideas?

Please try to upload the language files again.  If you're using SmartFTP, it was probably caused by "that SmartFTP problem (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=8359.0)".

All the smilies are pictures of X's, other than that no problems.

I deleted the folder with smilies, then uploaded one from an install.zip and it works now.

Hmm, the update package shouldn't even contain any smileys at all... I don't think... or does it?

From what I see in the update the smilie images were not touched.

One thing I forgot to post earlier.  When I was trying to fix it through admin the save buttons would not display.  I tried many times refreshing the screen.  I then closed IE and open a new one and none of that worked.  Tried all that again with more time between open and close, no effect.

I deleted and then uploaded the smilies folder.  Hit refresh on IE and all of a sudden the images could be seen and the save button was there.

Just used this to upgrade a local Beta -3.1415 because I still have two similar live boards (not to mention a live YaBB SE) and it went straight through first time. But it's also wrecked my theme, which was based off a copy of the old YaBB SE style SMF default theme and is now appearing as a horrid mixture of my theme and the new default theme, so I'm afraid I won't be upgrading the live boards till I work out why...
Title: Re: SMF 1.0 Beta 4.1 Public Available
Post by: Peter Duggan on March 28, 2004, 03:29:32 AM
OK, just tried another local one in case 'Convert the existing template and set it as default' did any good, but it's just the same...

NB There's no index.template.php etc. in these themes, of course, so the board's apparently using the new default version! So perhaps I should find that template converter, go back to my old YaBB SE templates and start again from there?

Probably because they relied on the default theme's URLs.  Try going into their settings and using the "classic" theme instead as a base.

No, I'm afraid that's not it!

The real problem appears to be that, in Beta -3.1415, we have:

QuoteModify the index.php template. (the main template)

But, in Beta 4.1 (and 4.0) Public:

QuoteModify the index template. (the main template)

Which leads to:

QuoteThe file you are trying to edit... can't even be found!

But I still have copies of the Beta -3.1415 templates if that helps!

Great, a new beta :)
Update succeeded.

I have a dutch forum so I removed the english language files. But the upgrade.php script said some files were missing. (the english language files) so I had to upload them again. Maybe this can be improved.

de3jeh, this is because of the package manager, please discuss it here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=8417.new#new

Anyway - in reply. The last two errors were a typo but wouldn't affect the install. The first two errors are because you haven't chmod'd the Sources and images DIRECTORY correctly. The directories must have 777 permissions. To fix this chmod the directories, uninstall the mod and then reinstall it.

It never hurts to run the upgrade.php file.  I believe however that in this case you can just upload the update package and be alright.  However, I still always reccomend running the upgrade.php file.

Here's how you fix that:

Go into Themes/default/languages and edit Admin.english.php

Search for:
$txt['theme4'] = 'Theme Settings';

Add after:
$txt['theme_current_settings'] = 'Current Theme\'s Settings';

First, the upgrade went smoothly and without a flaw. Running the upgrade.php file double checks things, and gives the installer / user the 'successful' thumbs up when an upgrade is accomplished correctly.

The question, and I looked around for the answer first. What is the final chmod setting(s) for the directories and files of SMF after installation is completed?

Thanks in advance...

I just changed server host's to one of the SMF developers hosting sites because of some of the issues you pointed out in your post. I also figured that it's a great way to help re-pay the developers for doing what they are doing with developing the SMF board software

Probably because they relied on the default theme's URLs.  Try going into their settings and using the "classic" theme instead as a base.

-[Unknown]

How do you change the theme's "base" setting..?  Are you saying to change "This Theme's Directory" to Classic?

Thanks.

No, set "this theme's images url" or whatever it is titled to the Classic theme's.

Hello,

I did the upgrade and its great abd evreythings seems to work right.

I just discovered an error in the Personal Message section:

It's  says the following:

Date
Notice: Undefined index: sort_by in /home/sites/site92/web/forum/Themes/default/InstantMessage.template.php on line 26

And :

From
Notice: Undefined index: sort_by in /home/sites/site92/web/forum/Themes/default/InstantMessage.template.php on line 27

It shows at the top of all messages in the Private message area and further it shows all messages, also the new ones.

What shall I do?

Tnx in advance,
Ed

I asked question about integration of chat in SMF.
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=9214.msg85369#msg85369msg85369

That chat could be easily integrated in Yabbse.
And I'd like to integrate it in SMF.

For moderators: it regards to upgrading Yabbse to SMF. Please, don't delete   :D

I've finally installed SMF on my public forum. My users really love it, and it looks great! Thaks to everyone who helped make it.  :D  The new permissions system is exactly what we needed.

Once the upgrade was over, there were no problems. (But during the upgrade it said "hacking attempt.." whenever you tried to access the forum, heh  ;))

Edit: Oh, and not to mention going from 0.09 load times to 0.07 or less.  ;)

I have a few questions about SimpleMachines, that I discovered only a few days ago.

1) Is this beta stable enough to be used in a public board ? I mean... I know there's still a lot of bugs (otherwise it wouldn't be a beta), but is it really such a problem, or can I already install this one and have an up and running board ?

2) Do we have an idea of when the next beta will come ?

3) If this beta isn't stable enough, will the next one probably be ?

4) If not, when do you plan to have an "OK" version (I didn't stay "stable", I don't speak about a 1.0 but about a "useable" beta).

Thanks in advance,
Kero.

1. Several people are, but I think you'd best answer your question by installing a test first.

2. Sorry, we don't give dates yet.

3. The next beta won't be an RC, if that's what you're asking.

4. I consider the current version usable - hey, it's used here, isn't it? - but, an RC will be coming later.

1) Well, I did, but I currently only can try on free hosts, so the problem I have may come from those sh*tty hosts which just can't manage a complex board succesfully, not to mention the ads which can sometimes create some weird stability issues.

2) not even an idea about if its at the end of the month or at the end of the year ? ;)

3) Well, without talking about a RC... but I see that the current version isn't all that bad, so I wondered if the next one would fix a lot of bugs, which would probably allow it to be really useable.

4) Well, yes you're right, and I must admit it seems to do a good job (though 18 queries to show a thread seems A LOT compared to some other BBs, but it seems quite fast and stable which is the most important).

1. Well, what do you think of this forum?  Like I said, it's SMF...

2. Oh, I have a pretty concrete idea of about when the next release might happen, generally, but as I said, I'm not going to say.

3. Let's see, 135 143 changes (many bugs fixed...) since the 27th - that's 14 days.

4. Well, which is better - 18 queries for one topic, all simple and cachable, or 10, all slow?  Quality over quantity.

Stable enough for me. Just installed the upgrade successfully on PinoyDVD (http://www.pinoydvd.com) which has nearly 300,000 posts from more than 6,000 members. I merged the best ideas from several themes and installed a Mambo front end to keep my advertisers happy. Took about 2 days because of look-and-feel tweaking but overall, it was a painless process.

Congratulations to the SMF team -- you guys are amazing!

Hey thanks Grudge -- that made my day. Funny thing is, a rival site that uses YaBB SP already parodied it, colors and all. Amazing the lengths that some people will go to just to get a rise from you.

I just wanted to say so far all worked great. No upload issues or anything. Only had one glitch. Was probably my fault. Said index.php was missing after running for awhile. Looked was still there. Reupload it and everything was fine again no problems. Keep up the great work.

This is a question for the devs... I noticed that this site is now using Beta 5. Does this mean that Beta 5 will soon be available for download?

Homie, a release date has not been set, stop telling people that it will be released in a few days.
