SMF Version: SMF 1.0.7
Hi
After my dear old Yabb forum finally gave up the ghost (I don't think the server could cope with over 1,000 messages), and I struggled to get another Perl / flatfile db forum script to work as a replacement, I finally bit the bullet and set up SMF (first time with PHP / MySQL).
The installation seems to have gone OK, and I am now in the 'testing' phase to make sure everything works OK before I unleash the new forum on my users.
So far, there only seems to be one problem. As a user (rather than as an administrator) I have attempted to update my profile, adding an image (uploaded), website etc - but my changes are not beeing saved. When I view the profile after 'saving' my changes, there is no photo, no website link etc.
Any clues as to where I have gone wrong? Do I need to add a directory or amend permissions on an existing directory?
One final, minor niggle - Yabb had a link back to my main website at the top of each page. I haven't spotted a way of doing this in SMF - is it possible?
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
Steve
Are there any errors in your forum error log?
What happens if you go to Admin -> Forum Maintenance -> Find And Repair Any Errors?
Make sure that the attachments directory is chmodded to 777 so images can be uploaded and that your "/tmp" directory (usually in your root directory) exists and is also chmodded to 777.
It's also quite easy to add a link back to your website in SMF. You can do this by modifying index.template.php for each theme you're using. If you have a specific location in mind, let me know and I can give you more info on what you need to edit...
Thanks for the prompt response Oldiesman.
No relevant errors in the log, no errors found to repair in Admin -> Forum Maintenance, attachments directory is chmodded to 777 (have just checked via Plesk - nothing in there apart from the index.php file), and the /tmp directory in root (same level as httpdocs - right?) is also 777 according to Plesk (there's nothing at all in there though).
Any other thoughts?
Again, many thanks.
Steve
OK, if I update profile info without trying to upload an image, the changes are saved. But if I update profile info AND try to upload a picture (with or without 'personal text'), nothing gets updated.
I have tried deleting the attachments file, and setting it up again, chmoding to 777 and putting the index.php file back in there, but this has not made any difference.

I have to go out now, but will check back here when I return to see anyone has had any brainwaves!!
Cheers,
Steve
Hi,
If it's a normal membergroup, have you checked
Admin Panel / Edit Features and Options / Avatars
It may be worth double checking the settings and check boxes carefully :)
Success! The image I was trying to load was larger than the maximum size allowed in the forum settings. There were no error messages to tell me this though. So I have amended the wording in the Profile.english.php file to include the image size.
Everything else seems to working fine - an excellent piece of work overall. Given that my previous experience of PHP is minimal and my experience of MySQL databases non-existent, setting up the SMF has proved to be relatively painless - largely thanks to the auto setup script devised by you guys. A big thank you to one and all.
I will sort out the link back to the main website where the forum is being hosted, later on (for now, I have added such a link to the news item announcing the new forum). I may be back for more advice at that stage.....
Thanks again,
Steve
