Otsikko: Group permissions
Kirjoitti: Lazybones - toukokuu 10, 2006, 12:03:10 AP
Is there a way for a new user to see a list of groups and send a request to be a member?
Or how about setting up groups that members are not members of by default but can automatically add them selves to without a mods help?

I have several forums that are specific and general members might not be interested in.

Nevermind.. It appears there is a mod tha adds some of the same phpBB permissions but not the ones I am looking for.

Seems like this should be a standard feature.. SMF is better than phpBB in almost every other way.

Hi. That's my mod and i plan to eventually add more features, but it takes time which I don't have much of ;)

Even if your mod did support it, I wouldn't install it.. I am trying to leave the horror that is maintaining a modded forum behind. A key requirement for me moving forward is to be able to patch regularly and easy.

As I understand it the auto patcher does not work if you have mods installed. That and like phpBB, mods required skin modifications.

Your mod does sound nice however...

No, the 'autopatcher' should work anyways. Patches are only released for security reasons, and only change very minor pieces of code, which are usually to do with security. My mod doesn't touch any such security code so it would be fine. If an SMF update is clashing with a mod, then that mod is probably a security risk so you wouldn't want it installed even if there wasn't a clashing update.

Well security patches are one thing but as the board versions change, features will get added, and I am sure conflicts will come up. Although SMF is clearly coded in a much more sane manner than phpBB, I can only see mods that alter forum code as a future headache for patching.

Only security releases can be installed as patches, any release with new features will need a full ftp upgrade, and any mods you have will be overwritten automatically :)

Interesting, however it still raises the question of when and in the 3rd party developer of the mod has time to update it for the new forum version if needed.

You have however made me feel a little better about considering installing a mod.
