I have tons and tons and tons of these core.##### and I have no idea what the hell it is.  Anyone have the slightest idea?

in my forum folder (not in any sub folders but the main one)

Core files are generated when php or apache crashes. You should review your error logs / contact your host about this.

Yes although it is important to find the cause of them as they slow down your site
