I have been trying all evening to install this program and it keeps giving me this message:
A critical error has occurred.
This installer was unable to find the installer\'s language file or files. They should be found under:
', dirname($_SERVER['PHP_SELF']) != '/' ? dirname($_SERVER['PHP_SELF']) : '', '/Themes/default/languages
I have uploaded every single file one at a time repeatedly and I still get this message.Any idea what I could have did wrong? Thanks in advance,Steve.
Are you uploading though cPanel or FTP client?
FTP client.
Try using another FTP client and overwrite the files. Take a look at ConTEXT (http://context.cx).
Ok I downloaded the program ConTEXT.I don't really understand what it is?How do I use it to do overwrite the files?
It's an FTP client. COnnect to your website via FTP and reupload the files.
ConTEXT is an editor, not an FTP client. Here's a list of FTP clients you can test drive:
TurboFTP
SmartFTP
BulletProofFTP
FileZilla (free)
A google search for ftp client will yield a lot of results. I highly recommend TurboFTP. FileZilla is free and I've heard some good things about it.
/me goes and hides behind a rock in shame. :-[
I meant to say FileZilla. Not sure what I was thinking at the moment.
Ok,I am really confused.I have transferred everything to Filezilla and I am still getting that error message.Whats the deal?
Can you please post a link to your website?
This is the web site that I have up now.I have a complete new site ready. Some of the links on this one don't work and the forum on this one is not the one I am trying to build.I am wanting to place my new forum in the new site once I get this thing figured out. Thanks very much for your patience.Steve.

I need a link to the forum that you are trying to fix.
http://www.wvoffroading.com/smf/install.php
Hopefuly this is it.I haven't been able to install it so I guess this would be the addy.
Ok upload this to your server and link me to it.
When I checked it there was a file not found error on the page so I was not able to see anything at all!
I used filizilla to overwrite all the files.http://mysite.verizon.net/captinhowwdeee.
I downloaded Filezilla Server.I have no idea how to use it.It just looks like an empty box to me.
This is where I want to upload my new board to.http://mysite.verizon.net/captinhowwdeee/newsite.html
If your starting to think I'm a dumb ars ,well I am too. >:(
It seems like your host doesn't support PHP. Ask them if they support it.
It seems they don't.Where can I find a host that does suport PHP and how can I set this up with them. This is not a site I make money on so I'm trying to do this for free. :(
There are a few good free hosts in the Hosts and Hosting (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0) board.
Ok I downloaded my sql and apache. What do I do with them?
Ok I just uninstalled it.I read that it has no security measures and is not good for a php board.Just one user online will slow it to a halt.God what do I need to do here.
What I'm trying to do is to put a message board directlly in the middle of my web site so users don't have to leave the website to use the forum.Like this one here.

You need to get a host that allows PHP and has MySQL access. Like I stated there are a few good free hosts in the Hosts and Hosting (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0) board.
This is what I'm talking about doing.

I just put the main page of the forum in the code for my website. It will only work for this page.If I click any links it doesn't work now.
i understand I would need all the files on my server for the board to actually work. Please someone tell me how I can do this.
major like I stated before the host on which you are on needs to have PHP and MySQL compiled with Apache. That website is using a cgi board. SMF was written in PHP so you need a host that supports PHP. You will not be able to setup this forum using that host.
Yes I understand that.I just can't beleive that their isn't an easy way to sit one up on my site with out knowing all the code and jargon that is in the instructions with these servers and such.
All applications, be they web based or pc based, have minimum requirements. It's up to the end user to determine if their webserver meets the minimum requirements to install SMF. It's also necessary for the end user to have a working knowledge of installing PHP applications, using MySQL, and solving basic problems.
Users who don't have that knowledge, or who don't want to take the time to acquire that knowledge, can still use SMF. Quite a few hosts have SMF auto-installers, where all you need to do is use your site's control panel application and simply click the "install SMF" button.
Majormudd you will not be able to install PHP on your host since you DO NOT have root access to the server. This is something that the hosting company has to do.
