I followed the steps in the Online Manual. I get to the second to last step (Beginning the upgrade). The instructions say:
Open up your favorite web browser and browse to http://www.yourdomain.tld/forum/upgrade.php (where Forum is the location of your forum). Provided you set the permissions correctly on Settings.php and Setting_bak.php and uploaded all the files, you should see a form with the following tick boxes:
I did that and got the error message:
could not be found. Please check the name and try again.
What's up? And how do I fix it?
thanks,
sturgis
Just to clarify, I did put my own domain in there, and the correct directory name for the forum.
Check in FTP that upgrade.php is actually there, and that you"re not blocking access with .htaccess or something.

In my directory, I have these files:
upgrade_1-0.sql
upgrade_1-1.sql
upgrade.php
There's no .htaccess, though. Do I need to delete one of those upgrade files?
Ok, I got it to run (I was using the checklist here: http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=6.0;prev_next=next#new (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=6.0;prev_next=next#new), and realized that upgrade.php should probably be CHMOD'd to 777 also, so I did that and tried again. Now, I get this error:
500 Server Error
A misconfiguration on the server caused a hiccup. Check the server logs, fix the problem, then try again. URL: http://www.sturgisguards.org/forums/upgrade.php
Dangerously writable: [/home/sturgisg/public_html/forums/upgrade.php]
FIXED
ACK! I feel dumb.
Yay, I figured it out!
Upgrade Complete
That wasn't so hard, was it? Now you are ready to use your installation of SMF. Hope you like it!
Liars! :'(
