hi all, i have been using SMF for about a week now and just recently read on a thread somewhere (cannot remember where exactly) that SMF does not get read by spiders and that is why mods are required to change SMF pages into .html files. is this correct?

No they ready mine just fine without such, shoot almost to much. Bandwidth eating critters.

No kidding. I see at least 3 a day from google alone and I haven't even been running it for more than 2 months lol.
