Hi, this is my first post, though I've lurked for some time.
I want to put my current 1.0.7 board up to 1.1 rc2, but I'm not having any luck. I've tried importing my current database into a fresh install of rc2, installing a new 1.0.7 with the database and then upgrading, same with updating, and it just plain won't work.
I feel I'm missing something here, but I'm not sure what. Will my 1.0.7 database never work with rc2?
Thanks for any help!
Pamm
when you say does not work, what do you mean? do you get an error message?
I make a new database and import the one I want into it. I link it to a clean install of 1.1 rc2 and it never shows as being there. No members, no posts, nothing.
I've also tried updated, with the database imported into 1.0.7 and it shows. But when I upgrade to 1.1 rc2, the screen shows mostly blank but for a few boxes, like sign in, which doesn't work, and a message saying it's an illegal copy of SMF.
I'm learning as I go, and I love the SMF board. I really do want to transfer the current one to 1.1. rc2, because I badly want that message box organization, as well as the better (at least I think so) admin panel :)
Have you tried repair_settings.php?
I've done an upgrade of this type and there are quite a lot of database changes. A long winded way, but less problematic, is to set all members to the default theme and uninstall all mods, then backup your database. Create a clean 1.0.7 and import your database. Then run the update 1.1RC2 (backup the database again) then install your themes and mods, making sure that they are the ones for RC2.
Upgrading is a simple task - Back up your database, uninstall any mods/hacks, and switch to the default theme. 1.0.x themes will not work with RC2, as will most mods/hacks not work with RC2. Download the upgrade/update package from our site, extract the files and upload them to your SMF directory. Run the upgrade/update script.
Done.
Many, many thanks! All installed and working now, and I figured out what I did wrong in the first place *smacks her head* I forgot that I'd changed the database prefix, so naturally it wouldn't show in the import *sighs*
I truly do appreciate the spelling out of things, that's what normally makes me step back and carefully examine everything I'm doing :)
Just as a postscript, the 'extra twist' in what I described was based on the experience of uninstalling mods and code hacks. It is not unknown for there to be 'Failed' against some files when uninstalling, some mods don't remove all their code and if you are into adding code hacks to files, did you make a note of ALL of them ..... :-X
The other thing about leaving the original alone is that if it all goes wrong, you can go back to where you were.
What I forgot to add to the above, if all is OK switch your domain to the new install.
What I'd strongly recommend for all new installs is that you install a copy of the default theme and do code hacks to that, leaving the default theme untouched by Admin hand.
