Link to Mod (http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=382)
This mod allows you to go edit a board in Admin / Boards and set a custom sort order that is different from the default order when you view the board's message index. You can have particular boards be sorted by:
- Last post
- Started by
- Last post
- Replies
- Views
- First post
- Subject
and you can have it in ascending or descending order. Users can still change the sorting of the board just as they were before.
Cool mod.. I'll check it out..
Just a few questions first..
How can a user set their personal default order? If they click "subject" to sort it by subject, will it always be that way for them until they sort it again?
thx for this great option.

I am waiting a long time for this feature.
I have one request so far, is it possible to have an option to sort on the first post on a board on visiting?
Now we can click on:
Subject Started by Replies Views Last post
to sort, but not first post
Can't you just click last post twice?
Yes it's working, thx for the tip, is this normal or due this mod???

It will only sort it by subject for the time the user is viewing it that way. If they returned back to the board the board would be sorted by the custom sort order set for the board. So the user cannot view it in their own default order permanently, so they have to click the link to sort it the way they want each time they enter the board.
Thanks for your reply..
WOuld it be hard to allow the user to set their own default?
can i see screenie ? :)
Okay, added a screenshot to the mod page, although not the best of screenshots. ;)
http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?action=download;mod=382;id=16927;image
The screenshot is when you are editing a board in the admin panel. You will see a dropdown that lets you select the sort method for that board and the order: ASC meaning ascending and DESC meaning Descending.
Not sure why but the search order is not being remembered, and I'm getting error messages like:

If anyone could help with this I'd really appreciate it
Unfortunately the mod wasn't designed for SMF 1.0 so I don't think it will work on versions below 1.1 RC2.
Anyone have this working on their site? I would love to see it in action.
For clarification purposes, this mod is specifically for boards only?
And not, say, custom sort of topics within the board?
Not entirely sure of your question.
It sorts topics within a board's list of topics. Such as by last post, number of replies, number of views, etc. If you are asking if it sorts posts within a topic, then no it does not.
QuoteIt sorts topics within a board's list of topics.
Would it do it alphabetically?
For example, if I want to make it so that the board's list of topics reads like follows:
Chapter 01
Chapter 02
Chapter 03
Chapter 04
Chapter ...
It will make it so?
Yes you can sort it by subject in alphabetical order. I forgot to include "Subject" in the first post of this topic, so sorry if I caused any confusions. :)
Oh, that is just kick ass. :D
<off to go try it>
This mod is so exceptionally kick freaking ass that I can't even believe it.
I've attached a screen cap of the mod in use.
This is FREAKING AWESOME!
I am sooooo happy right now: I have the 2 essential to message boarding, IMO mods in use:
This Custom Default Sort mod and the Show Signature mod...
Life. Is. Good.
THANK YOU!

Thanks - this is fantastic!

I tried to install Sort board package and after uninstalling i am seeing this error i am attaching the screenshot plz help
Is it possible to tweak it to sort by the number of "Thank yous" from the thanks mod or the number of votes from the star rankings?
i installed this mod, and everything was fine. then i installed a few other mods -- smfshop, tagging system, and tinyportal -- and now the dropdown menu in the custom board sort section no longer lists all the options to sort by; the only option listed is "default". the ASC and DESC options are visible.
i am assuming something in the other mods conflicted with this mod. based on that, i wanted to uninstall/reinstall teh customboardsort mod. i tried to uninstall, but then got a failure message:
Please remember to always make regular backups of your sources and database before installing mods, especially beta versions.
!!
Error in Package Installation
At least one error was encountered during a test installation of this package. It is strongly recommended that you do not continue with installation unless you know what you are doing, and have made a backup very recently. This error may be caused by a conflict between the package you're trying to install and another package you have already installed, an error in the package, a package which requires another package that you don't have installed yet, or a package designed for another version of SMF.

I've learned that whenever I've come into this type of problem, it means that I have to install the mod manually (sometimes in addition to via the Package Manager). The original code has just been modified, and now the package manager directions may not apply. You can do this via a text editor, and there's also a tutorial on this site somewhere as to how (if you've never done it before).

I will have to look at those mods and I can probably include a check to see if those mods are installed and if they are include them as options. I assume those fields are currently sortable when inside a board?
@chaos_gamer, it looks like the text strings are outside the Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php file. If you are still having this problem, make sure all text in that file is between the beginning <?php line and the ending ?> line.
@actoguitar, because all those files failed, you shouldn't try uninstalling it. Most of the strings that appear in the dropdown come right from SMF, so is it possible you have a problem with your language files? You may want to try viewing it in the default theme if you are not already doing so.
I tried to install on 1.1.2 and received the following error at step 3:
1. Execute Modification ./Sources/MessageIndex.php Test successful
2. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
3. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/ManageBoards.template.php Test successful
4. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php Test successful
5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test successful
6. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php Test successful
7. Execute Code database.php
Any idea how to fix? I really want this mod.
TIA
The test failed probably means that some other mod tweaked the code enough so that the auto-installer can't install it; you'll have to install manually.
That's my take on what happened.
It seems that this bit of code cannot be found in ManageBoards.php:
'permission_mode' => 'normal',
);
in order to add this after it:
$context['board']['sort_method'] = 0;
$context['board']['sort_order'] = 0;
But I found the general area and my new code block looks like this:
if ($_REQUEST['sa'] == 'newboard')
{
// Some things that need to be setup for a new board.
$curBoard = array(
'memberGroups' => array(0, -1),
'category' => (int) $_REQUEST['cat']
);
$context['board_order'] = array();
$context['board'] = array(
'is_new' => true,
'id' => 0,
'name' => $txt['mboards_new_board_name'],
'description' => '',
'count_posts' => 1,
'theme' => 0,
'override_theme' => 0,
'category' => (int) $_REQUEST['cat'],
'no_children' => true,
'is_redirect' => 0,
'count_clicks' => 0,
'target' => '',
'url' => '',
);
$context['board']['sort_method'] = 0;
$context['board']['sort_order'] = 0;
}
It seems to be working. Excellent Mod!!! :D :D :D
You rock dude, I just realized a needed this mod for a downloads board. I have several files I wanted to sort by date, and I posted them in different orders... this mod is perfect for me! Thanks!
Hi,
Nice mod! Been looking for something similar...
Just installed in on 1.1.2 but cant see where it's added the functionality?

thanks!
still cant find it? keen to get it going...
cheers! 8)
i can't have ads put up on alienation, only the default smf core theme, why?
even though i have swapped to SMF core, the ads do appear, but once i view the forum as a guest, i see no ads, why? and how can i solve this?
Unknown column 'b.sort_order' in 'field list'
any idea how to fix this?
@calv, go to Admin / Boards and select Modify next to any board. On the modify board page you should see a new dropdown which allows you to select the default board sort type for that particular board. Do you see it?
@TheCyberKid, ads? This mod doesn't have to do with ads. Are you saying it is not compatible with the ad mod? Please post any problems you are having with your ad mod in the ad mod's support topic. In anycase, it sounds like you need to manually apply the theme changes to your custom themes because by default, mods only install to the SMF default theme.
@ArkServer, I'm not sure why the mod didn't successfully add that column to the boards table but if you have phpmyadmin you can try running this query:
ALTER TABLE smf_boards ADD `sort_order` TINYINT NOT NULL
Changing the smf_ to your own database prefix if it is any different.
If the sort_method column is also missing you could also run the following query:
ALTER TABLE smf_boards ADD `sort_method` VARCHAR(60) NOT NULL
Thanks, it worked!
great mod :D
Hi akabugeyes,
Thanks for the reply! Very handy mod :D No cant see any new dropdowns? guess I might need to manually install it? any idea's first?
thanks 8)
calv, sorry that this was overlooked. Are you still having issues with the mod?
If it still doesn't work, when you installed the mod did it report any failures for any of the files it was to modify? Are you using a custom theme that has its own ManageBoards.template.php file? (Really no reason why any theme should though)
SMF 1.12
Field 'sort_order' doesn't have a default value
Datei: D:\Projekte\PHP_PROJEKTE\kosforum\Sources\Subs-Boards.php
Zeile: 1108
then i want to create a new Board
ltdeta, I have just released version 1.0.1 of the mod that should fix the issue you have.
Just uninstall the mod, download "CustomBoardSort_1.0.1_smf1.1.zip" from the mod's page and upload that. The installer will update the column to have a default value when the column already exists from installing it previously.
Please update this MOD for SMF 1.1.3
I'd love to SORT BY CREATED (the time and date the topic / thread / first post was created)
Something like: http://drupal.org/forum/2?sort=desc&order=Created&%24Version=1&%24Path=/
Thanks!
Does not work with a new install of SMF 1.1.3
There is no label for CUSTOM BOARD SORT
And the available choices are
* Last post
* Started by
* Subject
* Views
* Replies
This is not available!
* First post
Yet this is what I'm looking for.
Maybe the mod needs updating to 1.1.3?
I tested the custom sort mod again.
This time I picked the INVISIBLE option.
It works!
The invisible option is the sort by * First Post
Please make the correction for 1.1.3 to show the * First Post sorting option in the drop down menu.
Hmm. That's odd.
It seems to work fine with my 1.1.3 SMF version. Granted, it was already installed prior to my updating the SMFware to 1.1.3... maybe that's why.
I am getting this error after installing it:
$txt['first_post'] = 'First post'; $txt['asc'] = 'ASC'; $txt['desc'] = 'DESC'; $txt['asc_full'] = 'Ascending'; $txt['desc_full'] = 'Descending'; $txt['sort_desc'] = 'Here you can set the sort method and sort order for this board. Setting the sort method to the default will make it so the board uses the default sort method which in turn makes the sort order use the default as well.'; $txt['sort_title'] = 'Default Sort Method';
Check it out at the top of my page:
http://under-oath.org/forums/index.php
How can I fix this?
Open your Themes/default/Modifications.english.php file. You should see that same code somewhere outside of the <?php (first line) and ?> (last line). Move all the text so it is somewhere in between the <?php and ?>.
How do I modify files? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=24110.0)
i have install this mod.
im going to sort one of my boards but it returns again to overall forum default.
how can i change it ?
Can you describe the steps you have taken? Have you gone to Admin / Boards / Board Name - Modify to set the default sort method and order for a board?
I try and install this on version 1.1.4 and get parse errors when useing the package manager
What are the parse errors? It doesn't seem like it would be coming from this mod. When exactly do you get them? What stage? When entering the package manager? When actually installing this mod?
When I try and install, a screen shot below would explain it better.
Thanks.

Hi
I've tried this with 1.1.4
I've copied the 3 files into where index.php is and run intall.xml
No joy
Any ideas what I need to do?
thanks
JPL
This REALLY needs to be a feature in SMF by DEFAULT!!!
I've not heard anything.
It would be really great to have this worked on but I've tried a lot and have no success.
:-(
Ooo, Very nice :)
Hi LanciaSport, this mod will work for both 1.1.4 and 1.1.5 I just forgot to update the mod page to state that it would work for 1.1.4.
How are you trying to install the mod? You want to go to Admin / Packages / Download Packages to install it.
The Custom Board Sort modification package has been updated for SMF 2.0 Beta 3.
Before I upload it to the mod site I would appreciate it if a few people could test it and report back of any problems encountered if any.
Important: You need to clear your forum cache (Admin / Forum Maintenance) if you want to immediately see the changes you make when changing a board's sort method or order.
Thanks. :) The file is attached.
Hi akabugeyes
I've removed all the old packages relating to the mod and started again. All this is done in the package manager.
I was led to the mod :
SMF 1.0.13 / 1.1.5 / 2.0 b3.1 Update
And have done this. No trouble during this mod, but Admin homepage still thinks I'm on 1.1.4.
Moving on to the alpha mods...
After successful upload, I then tried to install the original CustomBoardSort_1.0.1_smf1.1.zip mod. This showed some errors so I didn't install
I then tried the modification in your last post. It comes up in the table as 1.0.1 but when I try and install it, it tells me my version of SMF is wrong (or the file is corrupt)
I've now deleted all the alpha mods and will wait to see what you reckon it could be.
thanks
Hello, thanks for this wonderful mod. I use your mod for my own forum and want to know, if it is possible to allow the users to select one permanent sorting option for each forum. So that they don't have to sort the topics manually, each time they are unsatisfied with the forum default sorting order.
Having a major headache with it...
any help would be greatly appreciated. The 1.1.5 update doesn't register in the admin central area, even though it said it had no problems.
Tried the alpha mod - no joy

I am looking for the same feature: sort by
created time/date in reverse order... making that board somewhat like a blog.
Is this the option I choose? "First Post" - see attachment.
Tried to Apply Mod, and got this:
QuoteInstallations actions for "Board Default Sort":
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.
Any ideas?
What version of SMF do you use?
1.1.5
3 forums, same thing.
edit the packagae xml file in the archive to include 1.1.5. works great
Ok, the only version info in that file is the mod's version.
So, how would I edit it to include SMF v. 1.1.5?
I re-downloaded it, and now get this:
Installing this package will perform the following actions:
Type Action Description
1. Execute Modification ./Sources/MessageIndex.php Test successful
2. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
3. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/ManageBoards.template.php Test failed
4. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php Test successful
5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test successful
6. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php Test successful
7. Execute Code database.php
Oh ok, my mistake maybe I didn't edit the xml file to add 1.1.5... But your tests failed means you probably need to make manual edits.
Have you taken a look at this? http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=402.0
how to make post show from newest to oldest
Would it be possible for you to make a version for 2.0? This is just such a great idea and I could put it to a lot of use on my SMF 2.0 board.
Thanks
Hello, I am trying to install on SMF 115 and get the following error message;
Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test failed
I have read the manual installation instructions and like it says, it's a bit confusing. Before I starting messing with code thought I would see if you have any suggestion.

I agree, please update for 2.0
how about the latest version? 1.1.6?
just installed on my forum.
SMF 1.1.6 and upgraded to v1.1.7
added package
works fine!
Installed this on 1.1.7, it said all tests successful, and it has it as installed properly, but the option is not in boards modify anywhere.
No new drop boxes to select that have been mentioned in this topic.
Did have to use a workaround since 1.1.7 broke the ability to un-install mods correctly, edited packages.php per THIS (http://dev.simplemachines.org/mantis/view.php?id=2734) topic. Also did make a temp folder in packages just to get it to upload and install, however this mod is not in that temp folder, it is in packages separately.
If uninstall board sort is selected, it errors with
1. Execute Modification .Sources/MessageIndex.php Test failed
2. Execute Modification .Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
3. Execute Modification .Themes/default/ManageBoards.template.php Test failed
4. Execute Modification .Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php Test successful
5. Execute Modification .Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test failed
6. Execute Modification .Sources/Load.php Test successful
Would really like to have this so our permissions remain alphabetized.
Can you make a beta version please i really want this mod!
I'm really interested also to this mod, i get it, tried an installation on 1.1.7 and had this:
2. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
All other modifications went well.
What's the matter?
Thanks,
Stefano
Any idea? :(
Hi, We're using smf 1.1.7 with the default theme and uploaded this mod using the package manager. The indication was that the installation was successful, however I don't see the option to set the board order.
It looks like someone else here has the mod successfully working with 1.1.7.
Any suggestions? Thanks
I installed the mod again (smf 1.1.7) and now I see TWO drop-down boxes where I can select the sort option in the Admin/Boards/Modify options. There is no title/description to the left of the two boxes but I can select SUBJECT which is the sort order I want. There is no place to select ASCending or DEScending.
If I select using the bottom box, both boxes take the same selection. If I select using the top box, the selection doesn't take.
When I select SUBJECT, the sort order of the topics is REVERSE alphabetical, rather than alphabetical, which is what I want.
I accidentally deleted, rather than uninstalled the mod. Can you please help me correct the problem? (uninstall everything and start over or just get the sort order option to sort SUBJECT alphabetically). I'll need simple steps as I'm obviously a newbie. thanks
Any news on a SMF 2.0 version? Or is this mod project now dead?
In case anyone else has the same problem of not seeing the ASC and DES choices.... I am using Firefox 2.0 or Safari on a Macintosh. I now see the box where the ascending and descending order choices are, next to the "sort order" box, but the titles (ASC and DES) don't show. I can still select the bottom choice (ASC) --which looks blank to me-- and now I have the alphabetical sort order I want in the board.

I'm looking for a SMF 2.00 beta 4 version of this great mod too,
i hope its not dead, its a great mod :'(
I have the system itself working under SMF 2.0rc1 now, but the management portion is not working (I'm having to make changes directly in the database). Trying to figure out why that is, haven't gotten it yet.
sweet..
well im willing to wait, thanks :)
Only one last bug to work out :) If I don't finish it today (I have to leave early today) I will in the next couple days.
Uh, unless I'm lying and I don't, but ya know, I'll get it done ASAP.
Edit: It is now 100% working. I just need to package it. Perhaps tonight, but I can't be sure.
/me waits patiently and hopes its soon :)
To keep you all up to date, I have packaged this now and am just working out a last couple bugs in the package itself (the code is 100% working). Hopefully it'll be submitted soon.
I'm using 1.1.7 and have the same problem that no text is showing up except for the larger drop-down menu...
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi302.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fnn83%2Farc362%2FPicture22.png&hash=6e262d175758c9b842593ec8ca94f62d2c76c7fe)
Path: Admin>Boards>Modify (specific board)>scroll to bottom to see above image...
But the MOD works perfectly anyway. I sorted by subject to get alphabetical order and decending order (bottom 'blank' space of the little drop down menu).
Here it is in use: http://www.hackhunters.com/forum/index.php?board=10.0
Thanks for a great mod... I've been wishing for this for months and finally made a 'feature request' which lead me to the mod. Exactly what I was looking for. peace.

It has actually been done for some time, and I also talked to akabugeyes and received approval to release it. Unfortunately, I'm having problems with the simplemachines.org site when I try to submit it. One of the support people is working with me to get it functional.
If somebody wants to test it on their site, I'll take the first person to PM me their e-mail address. I make no warrantees as to whether or not it will work correctly or not - it works on my site, but that is the only place it has been tested.

Do we have any other mod authors in this thread? I want someone with some knowledge to test this package once, then I'll release it publicly. PM me.
Good news everyone. My version (that is compatible with SMF2) has now been submitted here: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1677
It isn't yet approved. Once it is, we should move all discussion of that mod to that thread.

Good news everyone. My version (that is compatible with SMF2) has now been submitted here: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1677
It isn't yet approved. Once it is, we should move all discussion of that mod to that thread.
For SMF2 users, my mod based on this one is now available:

Thanks for the reply.
Installed & got the following...
Type Action Description
1. Execute Modification ./Sources/MessageIndex.php Test successful
2. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
3. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/ManageBoards.template.php Test failed
4. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php Test successful
5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test failed
6. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php Test successful
7. Execute Code database.php
I guess there's a few conflicts with other mods. Thanks anyway, would have been a great mod for information topics on my site.
Regards,

I had all sorts (ha!) of problems installing it on 1.1.8, and had to destroy the forum and rebuild everything. I figured it was my own fault, as I got warnings too. But... I rebuilt the forum (it was new anyway), then tried installing the package through Admin>Packages again, got no warnings, and it installed just fine.
Only problem is, it doesn't appear to work properly. In a board with 4 topics in it, set to any sort at all in Admin>Boards, all just return to last-in at the top.
Any ideas, folks?
I also have 1.1.8 and the mod also doesn't seem to do its thing. Anyone else using 1.1.8 and having success?
I installed this mod on SMF version 1.1.9 and it seems to work fine except for the fact that the dropdown menu's for the sort selection are lacking visible characters for some options. But all options are there, just not all visible. By trying them all out I found out which option is what. I think that can be fixed by checking the code that was inserted line by line.
I don't feel like spending hours to figure it out since I am not very familiar with php coding. Maybe someone else is willing.
Are your language file edits done and correct?
tried to install this on 1.1.9 board and it gets me an error
1. Execute Modification ./Sources/MessageIndex.php Test successful
2. Execute Modification ./Sources/ManageBoards.php Test failed
3. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/ManageBoards.template.php Test successful
4. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/languages/Modifications.english.php Test successful
5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test successful
6. Execute Modification ./Sources/Load.php Test successful
7. Execute Code database.php
otherwise its a nice mod that should be build in already
running english language with some mods, nothing special
please fix it to 1.1.9
merlin2, I just ran a test install of the mod on a clean install of SMF 1.1.9 and the mod installed properly.
So most likely you have another mod that has edited the ManageBoards.php making the mod fail to apply the needed changes for that file.
If you attach your forum's Sources/ManageBoards.php I can take a look at it for you.
wow, this is the first time to see this mod, good job
i'm using smf 2 though :(, can't you make an smf 2 version?

This is the last mod I'm waiting for before updating. It's a neccesity for us, so I hope it's updated for RC2. :)

That's a good question, and to be honest I'm not sure of the answer. You can try search the rest of the SMF community for answers though as this is not strictly related to this mod - it's probably been asked before...

Anybody answr my question please? (above)
NO, even with the board sort method is installed, there's no option to deactivate the forums basic sort methods..... u will need to edit the forum code manually to do this i guess
I keep getting an error when editing the ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php portion of the code.
I'm on SMF 1.1.11
Where I'm suppose to
FIND:
b.boardOrder, b.countPosts, b.memberGroups, b.ID_THEME, b.override_theme,
Then REPLACE with:
b.boardOrder, b.countPosts, b.memberGroups, b.ID_THEME, b.override_theme, b.sort_order, b.sort_method,
I get this error when I check the admin panel as I go for errors.
ERROR CODE:
Unknown column 'b.sort_order' in 'field list'
File: /home/hcfweske/public_html/Sources/Subs-Boards.php
Line: 1481
I'm doing exactly as it tells me to do, I've made it this far in the code.
For now, I'm skipping this step and going to finish the last php file to edit, and see if anyone has an answer :)
Thank You. :)
I think you've not created the column in the database, have you?
I'm currently working on an update that will support 2.0 RC3. I'm also working with akabugeyes, the mod creator, to get the updated package posted to the modification page.
Attached is an update for Custom Board Sort. This update was made with permission of the original author (akabugeyes).
Custom Board Sort v1.0.2:
- Added support for SMF 2.0 RC3 (based on an unreleased version for Beta 3)
- Includes SMF 1.1 installation support as well
nice work Motoko-chan,
thank you, although am using another mod for my RC3 install, would like to thank you for the time you have spent on modifying this
I'm getting an error with the updated RC3 mod, it says

Oops, sorry about that. I updated the package. You will need to redownload it. It should work now. I used the version emulate option to make it install on 2.0, and forgot that I had done so.
Before this change, I had just uploaded the package 青山 素子 had provided. Now it also tells the mod that it is okay to install on SMF 2.0 (in which it worked fine).

I need this mod for the latest version of SMF (2.0.1). I have been using it for years and love it. However, I upgraded my forum today and lost it. Any word on where I can get this mod for 2.0.1?
The 2.0 one works perfectly fine with 2.0.1
Where can I get that mod, or do I need to do a Manual Install?

I did the manual install.. painless.. :0) thanks for the help.
Really glad to have it back. It's crucial for my worship chord chart site worshipswap.com.
Run nice on 2.0.2
its not installing on smf2.0.2 i emulated the version but doesn't seem to take effect. please update this sir. :'(

I wonder if there would be a way to sort topics by last post timestamp instead of last post ID and by topic start timestamp instead of topic start ID?
We plan to convert the posts from our old Invisionfree forums to Simplemachines format in the future, then merge them with our current board. However, we would prefer to not touch the current 225000 post IDs to prevent all site links from getting broken, so we would rather prefer to change the older 56000 post and topic IDs instead. However, SMF sorts topics by ID instead of date, so this would cause all older posts from prior 2008 to appear above everything else.
We did not attempt a merge before, because the Invisionfree board was deleted in January 2008 and Invisionfree support team took 4 years before processing the restoration/backup request.

Yeah, thats in this MOD. you can sort by Last Post (timestamp) Ascending or Descending. which would accomplish both what you're asking for.
There's also options for Alphabetical, most replies, Topic Id, Topic author, Most Viewed, ( all can be put in ascending or descending order) ;)
Oh ok I thought only the option to sort by last post ID was in.
heyas;
a very essential mod, absolutely brilliant! i have a forum to post my fanfic, and this lets me keep the story chapters in the proper order.
i'm having one small problem. i was using the "next" and "previous" topic links to page through the story without having to go back to the main board each time. but because i'm sorting with the oldest at the top, the board things the "next" topic is the one older than the current (that is, my previous chapter), and vice versa. in other words, "next" goes to the previous topic and "previous" goes to the next topic.
which is not a big deal, if the users get used to hitting the opposite one to navigate. BUT... when a topic has replies, hitting "previous" takes them to the last post on the next chapter, NOT the *first* post on the next chapter.
so.... what i am wondering is... if it would be possible to update or create an add-on to this mod that would have the next/previous links actually know what order the posts were being sorted by, in a particular board, so that they know where to go, and in the proper order? do you know what i mean?
How can i install this mod in SMF 2.0.2? anyone please help!

You should be able to install it by
Version emulation.
Can this MOD be modified to sort the boards/Child boards?
I have a requirement were just the child boards need to be sorted in an alphabetical order. But the posts in these child boards should not get affected by this MOD. And also the posts which are displayed along with those child boards(ie. posts of the parent board) also should not get affected.

Ummm, why not just rearrange the Child Boards in alphabetical order by title under Modify Boards, by moving them until theyre in alphabetical oder? And, this MOD lets you sort each boards and child board's topics individually in each boards modify board settings.
It only sorts the topic listings for each board, not the Boards/child boards themselves.
You are right(and that is what i am doing now). But the nature of my forum is a bit different. We have many child boards and going forward we are expecting the list to increase.
My only concern is that, while in the process of moving the boards up and down i may mess up things. I actually did that once. Fortunately, it was just a test forum then.

It's rather simple, just have 2 tabs open, so you can see which cub board the board you're moving in was originally under. And, when you make NEW sub-boards, as long as you know that title, when creating it, you can select 'where' it'll appear with the other Boards/Sub-boards in the board create page. Just select [AFTER - "board title"] the board it comes after alphabetically. We do this with out blog board where each member gets their own sub-board.
Opening 2 tabs seems to be a good idea. While creating a new board/sub-board, i don't have any issue. Thanks a lot.
Is this compatible and safe to use with 2.0.2?
I would recommend trying to install the mod using the version emulate feature (http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Package_manager#Advanced).
If the package manager reports no problems, then I would say it is safe to install the mod for 2.0.2. The only likely problem would be if code was changed recently for the SMF 2 branch that prevented the mod from installing, but if that happens, SMF will stop you from installing it anyway.
I'm getting everything passed except:
3. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test failed
1. Add After ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test successful
2. Replace ./Sources/Subs-Boards.php Test failed
Could be something wrong my theme, i'm not exactly sure what this means though.

You prob have a MOD for boards that affects that line.
Find
b.board_order, b.count_posts, b.member_groups, b.id_theme, b.override_theme, b.id_profile, b.redirect,
it will prob have some extra after it. just add this at the end of the line
b.sort_order, b.sort_method,
Make the manual changes then install the MOD.
I've just upgraded to 2.0.6 and now I'm getting:
Field 'sort_order' doesn't have a default value
File: ...\forum\Sources\Subs-Boards.php
Line: 792
I've removed and reinstalled the 1.0.2 mod (in 2.0 emulation mode) and I still get the error (just a different line number with it uninstalled). Any ideas anyone please.
That section of code has:
$smcFunc['db_insert']('',
'{db_prefix}boards',
array(
'id_cat' => 'int', 'name' => 'string-255', 'description' => 'string', 'board_order' => 'int',
'member_groups' => 'string', 'redirect' => 'string',
),
array(
$boardOptions['target_category'], $boardOptions['board_name'] , '', 0,
'-1,0', '',
),
array('id_board')
);
Can anyone help?
Right now, is the MOD uninstalled?
"sort_order" is NOT a column of smf_boards in a default SMF installation. So it has to be a "leftover" from the MOD, if you really uninstalled it.
So, you should *BACKUP*, then head to phpmyadmin -> table "smf_boards" -> tab "Structure" -> mark the column "sort_order" and, at the bottom of the list, With selected: Drop
Great, dropping the column manually fixed the problem. Yes, it was uninstalled (according to the package manager anyway)
Thanks.
When I emulate 2.0, my board tells me that this mod will install without any errors.
However, when I attempt to install I'm given this error.
Notice: Undefined index: db_insert in /home/south176/public_html/Sources/Errors.php on line 139
Fatal error: Function name must be a string in /home/south176/public_html/Sources/Errors.php on line 139
I'm... not entirely sure how to proceed from here. To any who may respond with advice, thank you in advance.
What version of SMF are you using?
I'm using 2.0.6. Reluctant to update to 2.0.7 since I just got all of my other mods to work.
You don't *need* to update to 2.0.7 as it isn't a security release, and if you're not running PHP 5.5.
But IF 2.0.8 comes out, then you would need to go through 2.0.7 to reach 2.0.8. Then you will have problems again...
Therefore, I advise you to backup your current forum and try the patch update. If it doesn't fail, all is good. If you get "Test errors", DON'T continue and allow us to help you figure it out.
In another topic, not in this one :P
I successfully updated my board to 2.0.7.
However, I'm still receiving the same error when I try to install this mod while emulating 2.0.
I have no idea what can cause that... I just installed it in my test board without issues...
Line 139 of Errors.php is this:
$smcFunc['db_insert']('',
Can you compare to yours?
Well, now I am well and truly baffled. My Errors.php line 139 looks just exactly the same as the one you posted.
I copied that entire chunk of code in case there was something else there that's out of order.
// Don't log the same error countless times, as we can get in a cycle of depression...
$error_info = array($user_info['id'], time(), $user_info['ip'], $query_string, $error_message, (string) $sc, $error_type, $file, $line);
if (empty($last_error) || $last_error != $error_info)
{
// Insert the error into the database.
$smcFunc['db_insert']('',
'{db_prefix}log_errors',
array('id_member' => 'int', 'log_time' => 'int', 'ip' => 'string-16', 'url' => 'string-65534', 'message' => 'string-65534', 'session' => 'string', 'error_type' => 'string', 'file' => 'string-255', 'line' => 'int'),
$error_info,
array('id_error')
);
$last_error = $error_info;
}
