I have an old theme I would like to continue using...

But how bad is conversion? I was thinking it would be worth a try, but if it all from scratch then....

What is your recommended approach for keeping/updating a theme?

This is the original theme

But I have added/hardcoded a bunch of stuff (like linking privacy policy, most appropriate youtube video for a topic etc.)

What I have done is to find a 2.1 theme that has a similar layout and customize that to look like I want. I was not too hard.

Problem is soon as there is a bigger version update again the theme doesn't work fully. I went through like 4 themes already because they were not supported in the new versions and the theme developers abandoned them. Now I am just patching the theme I have for a couple or years now, once you get familiar with the CSS you can probably tweak it in a few hours.

Themes are generally usable on any major version set (for example,  with only a few exceptions, all 2.0 themes will work on any 2.0.x version.

At this time, all themes designed for 2.1(release) will work on 2.1.x

In the case where templates get updated in a patch release, the patch will also attempt to update the custom theme template files
