Important: Staff member account DELETED, when nobody has permissions to delete??

So I've come home to some very weird stuff going on.

One (my only) staff member's account has been deleted, but the posts have not.

1. They did not have the permission to delete accounts, or their own.

2. I only have permission, but nobody has had access to my account as I can see from the logs or from my regular changing passwords.

3. In the mod log, there is an entry that says "Username account deleted" or close to that, but with an empty field for the user who made the action.

In the IP box, it matches my staff member's IP, from a few months ago. Also, the entry CANNOT be deleted, unlike all the other ones which have full information in.

This is really important... can I just make a new account for him and link it to his posts?

Does anybody have any idea how this happened?

PHP environment?  Mods installed?

Perhaps check in "reports" to make sure the user didn't have the permission to do this?

If this is in the mod logs, it cannot be deleted until after 24 hours.

I haven't added or removed any mods since or before this happened.

PHP 5.2.5 but I don't see how this would delete one member as I've been using it for a long time without problems.

Also I checked reports, they don't have the permission.

Nothing from the admin log, error log doesn't seem to either.

How would I create an account to link back to the old posts?

It could still be a mod problem :)

I don't know if there's a simple way to do it, or maybe this is the simple way. Not having tried it I'm not sure if it will work, or it may be even overly complicated.

I would create a new account with a temporary name, and then reattribute all the posts to that account name. Then I would edit the account name to match that of the previously lost account. That should take the posts and reattribute them back correctly to the author. Then set the permissions of the account to moderator or whatever, and your lost moderator should be good to go. The only major thing he will lose will be PMs. You can edit in total posts, karma, etc. if that's important.

The only reason I think this may be overly complicated is because I'm not sure if the reattribute posts feature would work if your lost account is recreated with the same account name, will the reattribute posts work if the target name is the same as the old post originator's name?

In 2.x this has been made really easy. Create a new account. Then admin area > forum maintenance > Reattribute User Posts

I believe this should still work. The name (and possibly e-mail) should remain in the DB

Then it would be interesting if the OP will try that and let us know what worked.

If the posts do not reattribute correctly because of old name = new name, he can temporarily change the name of the account, reattribute the posts, then change the name of the account back. That should handle it for sure.
